Political Diversion: Ask not what your Country can do for you. Ask what you can do for yourself!
As seen on the bumper of a Toyota Prius on Sat 8/15/2009 during random Rags weekend wanderings (in my not so Eco-friendly vehicle).
This person is an enigma, wrapped in a riddle, cloaked in a conundrum. A conservative Tree Hugger (the Prius). One might think that this is an oxymoron. But, I liked the juxtaposition. Be Eco-conscious but keep the hell out of my pocket! Works for me.
At a stop light I pulled up next to the Prius, rolled down my window and asked where I could get the bumper sticker. We both laughed but the light changed before I could hear the answer.
Someone suggested we take the pressure off of each other by switching to politics for a while.
Any thoughts?
Best regards

I am smoking your Conservative pipe Vick!
It is all about personal accountability at the Global, National, Regional and Personal levels.
IMHO of course. If you won't work you starve. If you can't work due to some physical or psychological (verifiable) ailment you get subsistence level help.
Other than that you are on your own.

You have my vote, Rags!
I'm a huge believer in personal responsibility. That's part of why I have little respect for people who can work but choose to mooch off the system instead. I respect people who use the system to further themselves, ie in their educations. But people who CHOOSE to mooch off of it when they can (and should) be working? No, I don't respect them.
Vickmeister
I nominate you for VP. Hell yeah I would vote for you guys! And if they dare try to pull a Sarah Palin on you they will be met with a boot up the a$$.
Pass that pipe!
I have become a convert-!!

Thank goodness Reagan was not like his big screen persona. Could you imagine having a Bedtime for Bonzo for POTUS??
Oh Vic...you KNOW I love you
But in all fairness, the media is just an opportunistic capitalist machine. Sarah my friend, really did "it" to herself. She was way out of her league and her lack of grace under interview was something to behold sitting potentially a mere half a heart beat away from the presidency. I mean Joe Biden ain't no Maverick-he asked a paralyzed man to stand for a bow for God's sake. And Obama's speeches are a beauty to the ear, but improvising with a million Hmmms....Ummms....and Hassss... leaves a lot to be desired in the dynamic dept. But compared to her ability to answer a question unscripted? I couldn't believe anyone could sound less intelligent live than George W Bush. But yes...she in fact did.
Oh, thank God!!!
I'm not the only one!!!

Oh yeah, politics are a much safer topic, Rags!
lol!!! I'm a liberal, but one that has some strong opinions that are in sync with conservative views (such as certain types of people who abuse government/state handouts, for example). I'd consider myself an independent, I guess, because I don't always agree with democrats & I often feel that they back down too easily. I do like Obama, however. And I'm lucky to live in a state (Vermont) with congressmen & representatives that support the things I find important. Go ahead & call me a "tree hugger" because I admit my main interests are animals & nature. And things like health insurance, which I almost wrote a blog on the other day. Not sure if I want to hear what you conservatives have to say about that!!! Yeah, I'm all in favor of me getting health insurance as long as it means killing off some eldery people, lol. Insanity! And don't even get me started on Palin....you don't want to hear what I think of her!
I just don't get it
I don't understand why people hate Sarah Palin. She is a very dynamic speaker and can really inspire the crowd. What is so bad about her that would drive the MSM crazy trying to tear her apart at every opportunity? I mean, if you don't like someone fine, but is it really necessary to go out of your way to destroy someone and act the way they've behaved towards her?
We're going to disagree here for sure!
I don't see Palin as a dynamic speaker at all. Have you actually listened to what she says? I have never heard anything that makes sense come out of her mouth. She talks in circles & avoids questions. (Maybe I can't stand her because it's like dealing with BM!)
I wonder if she would "inspire the crowd" so much if she was overweight or a lesbian? Because all the Palin supporters I know always say how beautiful she is (which I don't get, but to each their own!) and they love her being so "down-to-earth" (meaning a gun-toting, animal-slaughtering redneck). Oh, and her husband is such a hard worker that everyone can relate to.
The other issue that bugs me is how Republicans were so dead-set on sweeping Palin's pregnant teenager daughter under the rug. You know, like no one wanted to talk about it & this poor teenage girl deserves privacy. OK, let's go back to when Clinton was president. How nasty Republicans were towards Chelsea, calling her ugly & that sort of thing. She wasn't even a teenager yet! Imagine going through puberty in the public eye like that. And they had the nerve to bash the poor child! So as far as I'm concerned Palin's daughter is fair game. And not so much that she made the mistake of getting pregnant as a teenager, because that happens, but the fact that Palin preached abstinence for kids rather than birth control. It's just so amusing! Doesn't anyone else appreciate the irony here?!
Well, sorry to disagree with you here, Sasha, but I can't stand that woman! And from the other people posting on this blog, it looks like I'm really outnumbered! So guys, please don't hate me!!!
Oh Squeegie- THANK you!
Whew! Sometimes it's easy to feel that we liberal minded thinkers are really a minority. But usually, I just sit on my opinion b/c I know nothing I say will have any effect on someone far to the right of fundamentalist.
And other times I'm biting my tongue not to say something, b/c I keep wondering why my fundamentalist friends are so hell bent on "enlightening" me as to the urgent need to convert me to the "proper" way of thinking, where as I know we all have such vastly different perspectives and that their opinions are just that and they are welcome to them regardless of how I feel about it...
But they just keep tryin' to convert me and correct my lack of fearing the world around me.
In my most humble opinion, I don't care if you get a leg up and I don't. I don't need one. I don't care if you get something for free that I had to scrape and save for.
My brother lost his ability to walk, talk, eat, and think clearly at the age of 17. I have low tolerance for complaining about much in life, about why things are so darn unfair. My threshold for what is truly UNfair is pretty flippin' high.
Guess I need to thank Rags again for this post. I seem to be finding my voice tonight.
Sita....
I usually keep my comments/opinions to myself unless I'm with my family or close friends, but I couldn't help it on here! I work in an office with a woman who's a republican & almost daily she feels the need to comment on certain politicians or topics in the news. Maybe comment is too light of a word...it's more like bash. And the "evil" politicians she's bashing are the ones I vote for, the ones that always support things that I want them to support. Every once in a while I'll come to their defense - politely - but usually I just let her blow off steam & then change the subject! I really don't want to get into it with her because I like her. (And she's in her 60's)
I, unlike you, do care about freebies & handouts. But only because some people don't deserve them. Of course, it's way too difficult to prove this, so certain freeloaders just keep on taking & taking. I don't mind that I have to work hard to make ends meet; I would feel like a blob of crap if I took advantage like some do. It's just really difficult to watch as BM gets food stamps, free (or cheap) daycare, free health care, free college, housing assistance, legal assistance, discounts on things, etc. And she manages to go on SEVERAL vacations a year. Meanwhile, we don't get any of these things, have to pay full price for everything & go on ZERO vacations a year. It's just difficult to grasp sometimes since I'm the "bookkeeper" in our household & know that without my income, we couldn't make it. And with a baby due early next year, we have a lot of decisions to make! Our expenses are already bare-bones. Not much more I can cut! And on top of this, we may end up paying BM child support if she gets full custody. This is going to kill us!
Of course, I realize this is complaining & you have a low tolerance for it, so I'm sorry!!! I'm sure what you went through with your brother has completely changed your outlook on life. I know that it usually takes something tragic or magical to put life in perspective for me. And I do count my blessings every day. And yes, I know that life isn't fair! I learned that at an early age, which is why I work so damn hard to make my way through this world.
Anyway...glad to have you on the liberal side here!
here here sita!

I don't either Sasha- She was my absolute favorite addition
To the last election. Once she signed on, my West Point Grad, 12 plus years in the Army conservative/fiscal/Republican DH looked at me and said...
Ok...fill me in. Whatdaya got. I never thought we'd have an election where DH and I would not cancel each other out.
God BLESS Sarah Palin. (Oh and I thank her personally for all that FABULOUS Tina Fey material. I coulda watched that ALL day!)
i think i was the one who suggested
Politics as a diversion to all this bickering nonsense. But that was made in jest. I've found that rarely does debating politics do anything except get people angry. When u have a strong enough opinion that u will defend it, u likely won't listen to, or won't be swayed by the opposition.
But debate away!

I have never been a registered member of any party.
I am a rabid fiscal conservative and a social libertarian.
Don't tax, don't spend, you keep what you earn (with the exception of law enforcement, national defense, basic infrastructure and forwarding national interests internationally) and if you are not perpetrating a crime against anyone else I don't care what you do or who you do it with. (see the Kid disclaimer below)
Now, Kids are to be totally protected under any and every circumstance and those (people) who can not provide for or protect themselves will be protected and provided for (basics only). This applies only to the truly help-worthy and not the weak, meek and lazy.
Don't harm an animal unless you are gonna eat it. I am Okay with PETA standing for People Eating Tasty Animals and I am also Okay with the more traditional interpretation of PETA. If I raise it, I can sell it, keep it or kill it and eat it but the animal should not be abused or suffer unnecessarily.
Our pet, Max the obnoxious parrot, is a rescue bird and he rules the roost so I am a pet guy.
Green Power is fine but Oil, Coal and Natural gas = JOBS so they are viable and neccessary. Personally I believe we can be energy independent with a combination of green technoligies (tidal, wind, geothermal, solar, fuel cell, hydro-electric, etc ...) and fossil fuels (coal, NG, oil, shale, oil sands) and reduce greenhouse gas emissions through scrubber and purification technologies. However, with more than 6Bil people on the earth we cannot power the planet on green technologies alone. As for nature. I love it and believe in protecting it but through management and not through protections that deny humanity access to natures bounty and resources. As for trees? They are a crop like any other crop and should be managed accordingly. (National parks and national forests are national treasures and should not be subject to exploitation except as a function of managing their health though I think drilling and producing Oil and NG is manageable. No strip mining or other major incursions.)
Currently I know of no viable candidates from either party that would get anything but my grudging vote with the exception of Gov Rick Perry of Texas. But, the media will not allow another conservative Gov from Texas to gain any position on the national political stage any time soon.
Gov. Bobby Jindal might be viable but after his televised rebuttal to one of President Obama's early 2009 televised speeches he may have difficulty recovering. He sounded like an automaton and pretty much killed any chance he has for national elected office. I actually like Gov Palen but the NOW/Feminista rank and file will never let a truly powerful woman who believes in Family, community and Country and is truly beautiful gain any traction on the National political stage.
But hey, anyone born on Feb 11 1964 has to be damned near perfect. After all, that is my Birthday. Sarah and I are crib mates ....... or at least were in the nursery in one hospital or another at the same time.
I guess in politics, as with most things, I am a pragmatist.
Please note that I referred to the President as President Obama. I may have no use for the man and believe that he is the most dangerous individual in the history of our country but I do respect the office he holds. I did not vote for him and will not vote for him but he is my President non the less.
Just my thoughts of course.

I am cool with that but my Lovely Bride may take issue.
I told her how excited I was to get my first on-line marriage proposal. She rolled her eyes, pfawed and said that you can have me.
So apparently I will shortly be very broke but available.

I am a Texan myself.
The issue of being broke has nothing to do with being in an alimony state. It has to do with my 5'2" fire ball of a Mother who let me know in no uncertain terms after the demise of my first marriage that my Wife gets everything. Of course my lovely bride agreed with Mom.
The problem is that my Wife and my Mom have become best friends in the 15yrs since we married. I can't win.
Hook-Em-Horns, Gig-Em or Shoot-Em! Whichever of the teams you support. Or Baylor, Rice, TCU, SMU, TS-SM, UNT, Sam Houston, etc..... I am good with all of them though my own blood is Burnt Orange.

Congrats on your D-I-L and Son with graduation.
My Son (SS-17) is a Senior in HS this year and is looking at Texas-Tech, Texas and A&M as well as Delaware. We are good with any of them. They are all good schools.
My Wife used to audit businesses a couple of times a year in Lubbock so we have spent time there.
Congrats again to you and your family on College graduations. That is a huge milestone in getting them out on their own and off of the parental payroll.... which is almost like winning the lottery.

I was on the 11yr plan myself.
I graduated with my Undergrad a couple of weeks after my 30th birthday. I worked, started and sold a business, married, divorced and pretty much did everything to delay actually growing up. But I was in at least one class every semester for 11yrs.
I actually finished my undergrad with ~210 Sem hours. By the time I finished my Masters I was over 260hrs.
So, I appreciate what your Son and D-I-L have done because I lived it myself. Or at least my own version of it.
As for McKnight Vs Knight ...... I heard what you meant the first time.
Congrats again.

Don't forget she can handle a rifle and mumble and stutter her way out of a question. I do agree she's a cutie patooti, but not sure where her actual power lies unless it's the ability to make GWB sound like a Dale Carnegie grad in a single bound.

I appreciate your restraint in not degrading the Holocaust survivors by comparing him to one of (if not THE) most dangerous men in the history of the WORLD. Nothing turns me off more than the Osama and Hitler references. I cannot sometimes contain my disdain for such a lack of historical perspective. So thanks again for that (sincerely.) However, I just don't get the fear based lifestyle, that I must not give any of what I have for the betterment of the rest. I often wonder why we so value men and women putting their lives on the line for our freedoms, but not those who say we need to care for those less fortunate then ourselves. I cannot ever comprehend holding a president in high esteem who propagates his legacy of war, fear, cynicism as being patriotic, but those who vie for peace are communist, socialist fascists.
Just don't get it my friends. If I dwell too long on how much and how many times my friend's views have saddened my perspective on the overall ability of our culture to stop seeing everyone as victimizing us, taking what we feel an ownership of, as well as allowing any and all political commentators to spoon feed us soundbites and generalities to repeat as our own opinions (all in the name of capitalist media- left or right doesn't really matter as it's all about who's sponsoring the programming and how much we can appeal to controversy to inspire ratings)
I feel I don't/can't relate to many people I call friends at ALL. I feel alone in my world view that the WORLD is in need of connectedness, and selflessness, and hopefulness.
It is why, my conservative friends, I nearly always chose to make witty little remarks rather than state my case to you. As Bella so aptly put it...
Those of us determined to try and see the best part of man's ability to show compassion, to think of Jesus's message of a life of grace and service, to seek happiness not only for ourselves but for all (and yes to me that means food, shelter, education, health care, and civil rights) get darned discouraged whenever Rush, Glen, Hannity and all those "fair and unbias" folks promote intolerance and external blame with such fluency I feel like I'm listening to my SD explaining why she has not a gift of life, but the burden of it.
Hmmm...maybe I should stick to my Sarah Palin inspired responses.
Just smile and nod my pretty little head with a side of pageant wave for good measure.
Ugh. Rags. POLITICS! Don't we have enough baiting and arguing on here? What's next? Religion? Oh wait- I already bit on that line earlier though managed less of a war and peace response.
Still like you in spite of my unpopular belief systems.
Sita, I am good with your passion and perspective.
and I do not believe that we are all that far off. I want everyone to have the opportunities that I (WE, that is the bigger WE) have had and the rights that I (WE) have been able to prosper under.
I purposely did not go in to anything more in my original post other than my basic Fiscally Hyper Conservative perspective and my Strong Social Libertarian perspective.
Having lived or worked internationally for more than 20yrs of my life I appreciate people as people and have value for every culture I have interfaced with at all socio-economic levels. The ingenuity of a person who can build a small house out of scrap lumber and flattened NIDO powdered milk cans is inspiring to me. Just as is the Arab Desert Goat Herder boy who walks out of the desert, trains as a mechanic and ends up being the extremely wealthy owner of the largest volume Dodge dealership in the world.
I believe that the American People are the most benevolent and charitable people in the history of the planet. As is evidenced by how much is given in foreign aid at the national level as well as the nearly countless $Billions that we donate privately to charitable causes.
That said, I also believe that it is no accident that in most cases in most cultures that fishermen and farmers rarely starve and they rarely need help feeding their families or communities. They work to provide for themselves for the most part.
In my opinion the sooner all on the planet realize that the most effective and consistent help they will ever receive is in the mirror the sooner we can all (that is the Global All) get past differences in philosophical opinion and get on with the business of life.
As I said in my original post, I believe that the truly help-worthy who are either physically or psychologically unable to help themselves should receive the help they need. The weak, meek and lazy should get what they earn by their own efforts. And all able bodied/minded people should take responsibility for providing for themselves. If they refuse then laws are in place to ensure that they are held accountable for their own behaviors and actions and that they are not permitted to take what is not freely given by those who actually produced it.
I also believe that forced benevolence is not benevolence at all. It is theft.
My "Political Diversion" post was intended to divert our community from the beatings that were being thrown back and forth on parenting, spousing and venting styles.
Someone ribbed me for opening this can of worms. Maybe I should have considered it a bit more before I threw this topic out there. But worms can be so soft, slick and fun to play with. At least they were when I was a kid.
On Gov. Palen: I agree that she is not the most polished speaker but I do appreciate her dedication to family, state, country and the rights as protected by the Constitution.
On President Obama: His personal story and journey to the White House is inspiring. It is a testament to him and to our country. The environment of being able to benefit by personal effort that our Country represents is in large part why he is where he is IMHO. My comment on my belief that he is dangerous is that I believe that his platforms and political perspective will drive decisions that will tear down the environment provided by our Constitution where by We The People are best able to decide what the fruits of our efforts are spent on. Americans care deeply for the down trodden but the Gov't should not be able to forcibly take what the American People willingly give. After all, the Gov't of our Country is "of the people, by the people, for the people" and not of the Gov't by the Gov't for the Gov't.
The premise of our very existence as a nation is to build and protect a Country where Citizens can live their lives in an environment where there is equal opportunity for everyone. Not equal outcome, equal opportunity. Outcome is determined where personal preparation and effort meet that environment of opportunity.
On the Conservative pundits: I absolutely agree that they tend to be over the top in their delivery of their perspective. However, the root of their message has merit at least occassionally.
IMHO freedom can not be gained when it is taken from those that earn it and given to those who expect it to be given to them but do not earn it for themselves. And ....... wealth cannot be multiplied by dividing it.
Just my very humble ( ;)) opinion of course.
Great discourse. Thanks for your, as always, passionate and well expressed perspective.
Lets go build a Habitat for Humanity house together some time. Helping people who are helping themselves is a cause that I can get behind, in front of and bleed for. Since ....... every time I do anything with tools it does not work until I shed a little blood. The odd part of this is that I actually enjoy building, disassembling, fixing and putting things together. I bleed nearly every time but I rarely end up with any extra parts.

Just wanted to say
That I wasn't irritated when I wrote this, just expressing some frustration over the subject and not related to your views in particular Rags. Sorry if it came across that way.
About to post more on a blog of my own, but wanted to address that I wasn't offended or irritated etc.
Sita, I was not/am not irritated either. I totally enjoy the
discussion.
I did not perceive that you were irritated or offended and neither am I.
I am actually having fun with this. I will say that I did vote for the last guy, twice, and was extremely disappointed in his total lack of control of the National check book.
Some of my dearest life long friends are nearly diametric opposites to my own Economic/Political perspectives. We talk, debate and usually pick up some valuable perspective from each other when we discuss politics. IMHO the key is to keep the focus on the macro level and not on the impact of a policy on an individual level. As I believe John Lydgate (Hey, I can Google with the best of them. I actually thought President Lincold said this)so eloquently stated "You can please some of the people all of the time and all of the people some of the time, but you can’t please all of the people all of the time." It is unreasonable to expect that in country of ~360Mil on a planet of ~6Bil people that we will all agree on anything ........ ever.
I believe that we can all agree that we want self determination and an environment that we can all live our lives and raise our kids safely. Or, as far more intelligent and eloquent people than I put it, Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness.
Beyond that most of us will have to agree to disagree.
I look forward to your blog.
