I don't really get why dates are so important?

So color me confused. I am not really understanding why having the kids on 12/25 makes any difference than having them on 12/24. I grew up in a family that celebrated 2 Christmases. We had one Christmas Eve with all the cousins and grandma, etc. and then Christmas morning we had our own private family Christmas. Years later I found out that it was so others in the family could spend Christmas day with their in-laws, step families.

In the art of being flexible is there a reason this has to be such a battle for so many families? With the country having 50% of families in divorce isn't it time we all sat down and made a new holiday tradition that didn't involve screaming at each other over a date? We often think it is fine to celebrate birthdays the weekend before or the weekend after, why is Christmas so different? Can't we find ways to get along with our ex's and share the kids without court orders and screaming matches?

For my family this year won't be an issue, in the past when people tried to make it an issue we adjusted. Try Hanukkah for a change, you can celebrate that a whole 1-3 weeks early and no one has to fight. Or split Christmas Eve and Christmas day. There are so many solutions if people could just relax.

Is there any reason it HAS to be 12/25?

I agree with you. The date is not as important as what your are celebrating and with whom. My parents divorced when I was 11, so I remember the Christmas Eve visits with my dad's family and the weekend after visits with my mom's family. It didn't matter what the date was. It was still a Christmas celebration.

This year, my divorced parents (neither remarried), my siblings and their families will all be coming to my house to celebrate on 12/28. I can hardly wait!

It doesnt make alot of difference unless you have my MIL who has this big Xmas dinner & skids want to be there cuz that is the one & only time of the year that they get clothes, shoes, coats & all kinds of stuff that they pick out prior to the holiday.I dont attend so I dont care!!
