Next time, I'm getting drunk!
I was so not impressed with DW last Sunday. I can forgive her, because I love her, but I wasn't impressed....
For starters we went to a family gathering on her side of the family. I wasn’t particularly keen on going, especially since SIL and her free-range animals were going to be there (remember Eve(il)?). On top of that, I warned DW that we would have to leave the place early because we have to pick up SS.
Well it turns out that this family gathering was really a surprise for DW. Her cousins from overseas were over. There was a lot of “OMG!!!” and “I can’t belive you are here!”.
It was nice to finally meet DW’s cousins, because I have heard a lot about them, but why-o-why make this a surprise? In-laws KNOW we have to leave early to fetch SS.
Drinks started getting passed around. After 2 beers, DW asks me if I will be okay to drive. I said yes, I am fine. Whenever I know I have to drive later, I have two beers at the start of the party and that’s it. DW on the other hand, decides to get tanked.
We were suppose to leave at 7pm, and when I went to fetch DW to remind her, she was pouring herself another glass. I reminded her of the time and she said “Oh! Right. This is my last glass and we’ll get going.” Well that glass of wine NEVER ENDED!!! It kept getting refilled and refilled…
It was pretty obvious that DW was in full fledged party mode.
Over an hour and a half passed. This means we were going to be an hour and a half late in picking up SS. DW said she’ll call Donkeykong to say we were going to be late. Except she didn’t call, she texted. Donkeykong doesn’t acknowledge texts from DW when SS is with him.
I really didn’t know what to do at this point. I was thinking of recruiting the aid of MIL and FIL, but they’re bots. MIL’s go-to response to everything is to “not to worry about it” and FIL’s response is to crack a joke. You know what he said? “I was hoping you guys would leave early so that I would have more booze to myself….”
Ha! Ha! Really funny FIL. Next time you throw a party, I'll bring my old Fraternity brother's in tow and then you will REALLY KNOW what a well run dry is like!
So really, I only had two choices; A) sit and wait patiently for DW to sober up, or just sit back and get wasted myself. There's also option C) which entails throwing DW over my shoulder and carrying her out of there, but I only do that as a last resort (And yes, I have done that, but only with the ex, never with DW).
Finally, DW says “Ooh! Look at the time! HONEY, WE HAVE TO GO!!!”
I look at her and said “Yeah! I’ve been telling you this every 10 minutes since 7 O’CLOCK!!!”
Lots of laughs. I mean everybody thinks this is a big effing joke.
And then I started wondering. “Why am I getting bent out of shape here? Why am I the only smart human being in a 25-yard radius with ANY sense of responsibility!?”
BS and BD were strapped and waiting in the car, while DW was still chatting it up. Kid’s kept on asking, “Why isn’t Mommy coming?”. I tell BS and BD that Mommy had a little too much "Mommy juice."
BS says "Mommy juice? Silly Daddy! Mommy is drinking wine!"
Correction. Me and BS are the only smart people in a 25 yard radius....
Meanwhile, DW’s phone which was plugged into the car charger was starting to get blown up with texts and VM’s from SS (“Where are you?” “Are you coming to get me?” “When are you coming?” “Mom? R U There?”…
Yeah, Mom is here but she’s a little pickled…
So we finally hit the road. Kids are passed out.
DW senses I am not exactly happy with her and asks me what’s wrong.
“We're late." I say. "We're late and it is your fault, but I’m not going to have a serious conversation with you now. We can wait until your sober…”
I thought this evening would finally be over once we pick up SS. Oh but no, when we arrive at Donkeykong’s place, that's when the real drama begins.
DW wants to get out to “have a smoke.”
I tell her “NO! You stay in the car!”
Last thing anybody needs right now is Donkeykong seeing DW drunk out of her skull having a cigarette on his front lawn! So I force her to stay in the car.
“Oh common! I need a shigarette!”
I was adamant. I lock the door. She tries to get it to open and while she tries, I grab her purse and hide it under my legs. DW is shuffling and bemoaning her need for a cigarette. I keep telling her to calm down and wait until we get home. Her nicotine habit can wait an extra 20 minutes…DW looked like a cat struggling with a ball of yarn. She hissed and cussed but then finally gave up.
SS gets in the car and he’s all cheery and happy to see DW. DW apologizes saying that her cousins where here and it was a surprise.
“Who?” SS asks.
That’s when DW sobers up. “What do you mean, ‘WHO!?’. My cousins! From overseas!”
“I don’t know who they are.” SS states
“YES YOU DO!!! You met them a few years ago!”
“I don’t know who they are.”
DW is trying to explain to SS who her cousins are but it is obvious that SS not only doesn’t remember but doesn’t care and he is trying to change the subject, trying to engage his mother in a conversation about Transformers…This upsets DW even more.
I stay silent and drive on.
By the time we hit the highway again, DW passes out. She would have slept the whole way but SS kept poking her, trying to steer her into his world…
"Mom? You okay? Mom!? MOM!?!? Mom I wanted to ask you something....Urm....oh wait, I forgot.....Mom? Moooooooom?"

Like that Family Guy thing.
Like that Family Guy thing. Mom....Mommm....Mom....Damn I wish I could remember it. I swear my BS has shown it to me a dozen times.
Mom? Mom? Mommy? Mommy?
Mom? Mom? Mommy? Mommy? Momma? Momma? Lois?
WHAT!?!?!?
Uh....Hi!
That's it. Thanks Draco.
That's it. Thanks Draco. That would of been in my head all day.
Believe me, that crossed my
Believe me, that crossed my mind. The only thing that held me in position was BS and BD would have gotten really upset if I did that.
I don't like being late for
I don't like being late for ANYTHING. My friend's say "If Drac0 is late, check your watch again, because it's probably running too fast."
People have mixed feelings
People have mixed feelings about getting tipsy with the kids present. Personally, I have no qualms with it because my Mom and Dad used to get snookered regularly at Christmas family parties. But this was totally unplanned.
A fact that I will have to
A fact that I will have to make abundantly clear next time a similar situation like this arises (preferably before the first wine bottle gets uncorked)
It didn't help her that she
It didn't help her that she chugged the last two glasses of wine. I told her the morning after that was a STUPID thing to do. I mean common, even full-on raging alcoholics know better than to do that. AND SHE USED TO BE A BARTENDER!!!
Ugh
I made all my "drinking mistakes" when I was in my 20's...
This isn't a regular
This isn't a regular occurance and BD and BS slept the whole car ride home. So they didn't witness much of anything.
This is how I feel too. I am
This is how I feel too.
I am guilty of drinking in front of my BS. But I am not falling down drunk, we have to leave the house and go take care of other things.
We have cookouts and card parties. Kids play together. Parents have some drinks. No biggie.
Sounds like Dracos wife went overboard though. She had a responsibilty to pick up her son.
LOL!!! I'm sorry to laugh at
LOL!!! I'm sorry to laugh at your pain, but I really got a good giggle out of this one Draco!
I swear though, sometimes I wonder if your DW's brain just didn't quite make it all the way to adulthood. It's like there's a part of her that's stuck at a 21 year old party girl.
Oh DW likes to party. I don't
Oh DW likes to party. I don't begrudge her that, but this was a lesson learned for me. Whenever we are going anywhere that requires SS to be picked up/dropped off, I am forcing DW to do all the driving.
After living with DW for many
After living with DW for many years now, I thank the good Lord I don't have that addiction.
DW did quit when she got
DW did quit when she got pregnant with BS, but - like your hubby - she started right up again when the stress of the upcoming custody battle over SS hit home.
I feel a horrible pain of
I feel a horrible pain of guilt if I'm in the shower and miss a call from my BS. He sens me the texts too "Mommy are you there" I hear his little voice in my head when I read it and it brakes my heart. I sure hope DW will grow up and remember that her son should take priority over wine and cousins in the future. Poor little guy.
I only think this was an
I only think this was an issue because you guys are in a high conflict situation with DK. Any other time, I would have insisted DW call DK BEFORE she got tanked to inform him that she was going to be 2 or 3 hours late and ask if that would be ok with him.
Everyone has a right to have a good time, however, arrangements should always be made FIRST.
DH and I were at a birthday party Saturday. Before we even left, we decided that we HAD to be home at a certain time because BS16 had football practice in the AM and my GB was being dropped off at 7am as well.
Due to this, I was the designated driver and only had 2 drinks, followed by multiple glasses of water. At the exact time DH and I had agreed to leave, we left the party and headed home.
I popped 2 Aleve before bed and was in bed at 2:15am as planned.
Woke up at 6:45am to the DING of a text from BM saying she was outside with GB.
Thankfully, no headache, however, my old ass needs a lot more than 5 hours sleep these days, I was very tired!!!
Broken.lost - let me just
Broken.lost - let me just tell you that the party started at 10pm. I told DH there was no way in hell I was leaving my home at 10pm to go anywhere so if we had any chance of attending that soiree we would need to make dinner plans in the city and then do a cameo at the party for an hour or two, or else all bets were off.
So we left the house and arrived in the city at around 8:30pm. We had dinner first and then made our way over to the party afterwards. We left at 1:30am and got home at 2am. I was dead tired and I found it so funny that not that long ago, I'd start getting dressed to go out at MIDNIGHT!!! Would walk into the club at 2am! Those days seem like ages ago.
DW and I used to be the same
DW and I used to be the same way. We would only think to hit the popular night-spots at around 10pm because that is when the real action started. I honestly can't remember the last time I was out and about at midnight and just starting to get vibe. Of course, those days all came to crashing halt the moment I graduated university. I started working full time the very next day!
Like I tell my colleagues. "Yeah! I love to go out to paint the town red, but I hate to come into work the next day looking like something the dog threw up!"
I'm 44. I used to party like
I'm 44. I used to party like a rockstar 5 days a week starting on Thursday nights. Would literally get home at 5am, nap for 2 hours, shower, change and be at work by 9. Did that for a good 2 years. NOW? You gotta be REAL special for me to stay up past midnight. I'm one of those that looks at the clock and counts how many hours of sleep I can get based on my schedule!
Draco, the more I read about
Draco, the more I read about your DW I wonder why on earth you ever married her in the first place. I'm sorry but her, her family and her son are just a hot mess.
