Dear Valued Users,
It's with a heavy heart that we announce the permanent closure of StepTalk.org on August 31st, 2025.
This decision wasn't an easy one. For over twenty years, StepTalk has been a source of support for stepparents around the world! However, over the years, the costs associated with maintaining and upgrading the site to remain secure, meet current standards and maintain availability have become unsustainable.
We are incredibly grateful for your support, contributions and the community you've helped us build. Your engagement has made StepTalk.org a special place and we cherish the memories and connections made here.
We would especially like to thank Aniki for volunteering to be a moderator and for caring so much.
Thank you for being a part of our journey and we wish you all the best.
Sincerely,
Dawn and The StepTalk Team

What is it about these new cars? We bought a new car a couple of months ago. We'd been driving our 12 year old car across country with no issues ever. First trip in the new car and I got also got stranded 2 hours from home. And I mean REALLY stranded. Usually the tow driver will give you a ride - but I could not get in the tow truck which was one of those monster trucks that they use to haul huge things. That step up was almost a yard off the ground.
My DH and his brother are going to take a road trip to Texas (long drive). They are taking our old van. I think it's more reliable.
Someone else I know just had a brand new car break down. And we bought the same make and model again so it's not like we switched brands even.
I just bought a brand new car
I just bought a brand new car about a month ago and I've had to take it back to the dealership twice! The check engine light keeps coming on - something about the cooling mechanism in the motor. I am going out of town in a couple of weeks and definitely taking my older vehicle!
Not sure about the 'new car
Not sure about the 'new car breakdown' trend but dealership mechanics are mostly parts changers and not actual diagnostic techs. I used to work for a dealership and deal with service customers and more likely than not, the vehicle was taken back to the shop multiple times for the problem to not have been fixed the first time.

Because it's cheaper to pay a 22-23yr old w no experience than it is a 40yr old with 20 years...
That is very true.
That is very true. I hope there is a learning curve that they get past when they have comebacks.
I wonder if it is because
I wonder if it is because more and more "computer circuits" are in cars...while the cooling is not improved. (Think large computer or servers and how important cooling is.) IDK, makes sense to my logical brain that knows nothing about cars...

Well small miracles I was only a mile from a ford dealer...so aaa tower me there. Starter was bad....go figure. They dont have one in stock but are pulling one off a new ford on the lot. Praying for a quick turnaround.
