OT - Thirsty Thursday
We're closing in on Memorial Day and, for a lot of folks in the U.S., that means a barbecue or some sort of get-together. When there's food; there's drink. Here are a few recipes for you (including non-alcoholic and one for the kids).
ETA: In no way did I intend to downplay the significance of Memorial Day - it's a day to observe the members of military who died in service. I do realize that it IS a weekend when many people have get-togethers or when tourist season kicks off. My sincere apologies to anyone I may have offended.
Easy White Sangria
- 1-750ml bottle white wine
- ¾ cup triple sec
- 1 cup sliced fresh strawberries
- ½ cup fresh blueberries
- ½ cup fresh raspberries
- 2-12 oz cans lemon-lime soda or ginger ale
- In a large pitcher, combine the wine, triple sec, and fruit. Refrigerate for at least 1 hour (it tastes better if it sites in the fridge for a while).
- To serve: Pour the soda into the sangria and give it a little stir. Pour over ice into glasses. Spoon some of the fruit into the glass.
Aniki’s Note: I have made this with 1 cup of sliced peaches in place of the blueberries and raspberries.
Grapefruit Margarita Slushy
- 12 oz can frozen lemonade
- 12 oz grapefruit
- 12 oz tequila
- 3 cups ice
Combine everything in a blender and blend until smooth. Serve in salt- or sugar-rimmed glasses.
Peached Whale (1 serving)
- 1 oz rum
- 1 oz Malibu rum
- 1 oz peach schnapps
- Orange juice
In an ice-filled shaker, combine rums and schnapps. Shake and strain into a rocks glass (with or without ice). Topewith orange juice.
Sherbert Surprise
- Any flavor of sherbet (raspberry, pineapple, orange, lime, mixed)
- 7-Up or ginger ale
- Rose's grenadine
- Rose's lime juice
- Pour in enough grenadine to cover the bottom of a tall glass.
- Add 2 scoops of sherbet.
- Fill with 7-Up or ginger ale.
- Top with lime juice. DO NOT STIR!!
For the kids:
- Make different flavors of Kool Aid and freeze into ice cubes.
- Add the Kool Aid ice cubes to clear soda (7-Up, sprite, sierra mist).
- The drink changes flavor as the ice melts!

We usually have a very low
We usually have a very low key gathering of DH's Army friends. The grill will be on and beers will be flowing, but nothing huge.
My PSA on Memorial Day: please don't wish veterans a "happy" memorial day this weekend. If you want to thank anyone for their service this weekend, there are hundreds of great veteran organizations in need of support. For many veterans, this weekend is a very hard time.
I NEVER wish anyone a "happy"
I NEVER wish anyone a "happy" Memorial Day. Memorial Day is to remember military people who dies in active duty. I thank them for their service.
However, this IS a big weekend for folks to get together and "kick-off" the start of Summer (tourist season, in some areas).
I'm sure you know the deal!

I love rum drinks! That peached whale sounds good. We will be planting some flowers that weekend. I wish it was already done but things have been to busy this year.

Queen, I love what beebeel said!! Too many forget the significance of Memorial Day and act like it's a celebratory holiday. Sure, we could celebrate our freedom, but the purpose is to remember those whoe died in service.

Aniki, just so you knwo, no
Aniki, just so you knwo, no offense was taken. And even with it being a hard day for DH he normally still wants to BBQ. It's a hard day, so there's no other way that he wants to spend it besides with his family He still keeps it fairly reserved, but he's all for spending time eating good food with us while he remembers his fallen brothers.
Thank you, sweetie. But I
Thank you, sweetie. But I might have offended others if they thought I meant that Memorial Day is only about fun and games, when it truly is not. It IS true that plenty of folks use that 3-day weekend as a reason to get together (my family used to have a barbecue every year - we decorated patriotically).
My DH believes that his fallen brothers would prefer we celebrate that they LIVED and considers Memorial Day a day to reflect on them, their lives, and their sacrifice.
I think the majority of
I think the majority of veterans that I know would agree with your DH Sounds about like mine. He doesn't see it as a happy day, but he also likes being with others and celebrating their life and sacrifice
