O/T--Zoloft Side Effects Anyone?

Triggerfishgal's picture

My doctor put me on Zoloft on October 11th. After one week, I felt amazing. Much more alert, happier than I can remember, nothing phased me, just great in general. Then a week ago, mood swings. I'd go from normal (the happy feeling gone, just back to normal before the Zoloft) to extreme depression, to almost violent anger at the drop of a hat.

Has anyone else on Zoloft had these side effects? Is this just temporary as my body adjusts?

No they are there. The dosage needs to be modified. For me, I was on for 6 months after my husband died. I lost 40 pounds in two months from the zoloft. It just completely dessimated my appetite. Please give it at least a month to work. Some of those effects dissipated over time. My girlfriends said my highs were too high and my lows too low. Never sure if it was the grief or the Zoloft. After 6 months I went off of it, because I felt I needed to grieve on my own. I have had to try others over time. Prozak did nothing for me. Best for me was Cymbalta. Energy was great. But, the insomnia needed a sleeping pill every night.

Good luck.

Triggerfish - I don't know what your history is, but I can tell you that if you're bipolar as opposed to unipolar depressed, it's risky to take an anti depressant without a mood stabilizer.

Many people with bipolar disorder go for treatment in a depressed phase, start anti depressants alone, and then go manic. It happened to me and it got very messy.

If you have any indication that you may be bipolar, you may want to talk with your doctor about adding some kind of mood stabilizer.

Yes, I agree with that. Sometimes even just a mild mood stabilizer works wonders. If your moods are swinging that much you need to talk to your doctor right away for an adjustment of your meds.

I was on it several years ago, because my former SO told me I was depressed.

Anyways, my side effects were awful. I swear I didn't sleep for three weeks straight and I felt like a zombie. I had the same song going through my head all night....I couldn't stop it. I thought I was going insane.

I also tried Paxil, Wellbutrin, Prozac and another one (can't remember the name) as well. Paxil worked really well for my anxiety sypmptoms, but getting off it was hell. I went off cold turkey, and the withdrawal effects consisted of: not being able to move my head because of the dizziness, horrible crying spells, terrible depression among other effects.

I found out most of my mood swings were actually hormonal, and solved by taking Birth Control pills.

It sounds as if you need a different med - stop taking the zoloft and call your doctor today - you are having an adverse reaction to zoloft - there are many others that you can try - suggest to your doctor lexapro.

Thanks everyone. As far as the bipolar, it only started a week ago when my dosage got increased, so I think it is a side effect, but I called the doctor and he is going to change me over to something else Monday when I go back. Til then, he decreased my dosage back to 15 mg per day of the Zoloft.
