It's the little things...

Just want to start out this blog with a little mwahahahaha (in a very even laughing kinda tone).

Anyway I have been dealing with a ton of disrespect in our home by the skids. It is an ongoing battle but wanted to pretense this just for clarity as I didn't want my satisfaction to be misread....

So yesterday skids walk in and SD12 goes right to her room with SO following behind. I have learned to not ask questions because frankly it is ALWAYS something. Anyway after a very loud confrontation SO emerges and mentions a grounding. The evening ensues and everyone goes about their business with dinner, homework, sports etc. And I end up back home to find SD12 on the couch watching tv. So I say 'hey SD aren't you grounded?' And I get a 'well my dad saw me out here' with an attitude and tv watching continues. That's a lie because SO hadn't been home yet. Which was the EXACT reason why she was grounded apparently.

A short while later I say 'hey SD you sure you aren't grounded' and THIS time I get a huff and storms off to her room, slams door.

During room time SD emerges many times to collect toys around the house and each time goes back and slams door.

Cue SO finally home. I am sitting down at the table with my BD playing a game. SO goes outside to finish something up and SD comes out, sits right down next to me at the table and gives me that 'FU' grin she so adores. I finish our game and calmly walk outside and sit with SO on the porch. A minute later SD comes out and sits down right next to us.

At this point I just happened to look over at SO and say 'hey, didn't you ground SD?' She loses her smirk just as SO says 'yea, go to your room and now add another day!'

Stepping off - 1
SD - 0

Try me again mwahahahaha!!

I totally get that - and fortunately we have begun to move past that 'defensive over my babies' crap that is so common.

Seriously parents. Say what you mean and mean what you say. If you are going to ground a kid, they should know what that means and the exact length of time that the punishment will last. I hear parents say you are grounded "till I say your not" when usually the parent gets over their anger and just forgets the "grounding" or whatever punishment they meted out.

SO gave the grounding and it was very clear - in your room for the night.
BUT at 12 a parent shouldn't have to sit on a kid to make sure that happens. We have other kids that are involved in activities and are in and out of the house all evening.

However even though I knew what the grounding was I didn't enforce it for the simple fact that SD needed a little wake up call in regards to her disrespect towards me and her thinking that 'daddy will take care of me' attitude.

I would pass out if I ever heard mine say a word to his adult ones, just words in response to the digs and insulting remarks.

The OP is most fortunate indeed!
