Covid hits our house

Old sm's picture

So DH developed a sinus infection 2 weeks ago; got started on antibiotics. Then a few days later had a fever. We got him tested and of course, he is positive for the virus. We are 13 days in after showing his first symptom. I'm not even bothering with the social distancing stuff at home bc when you add in incubation I've been around it here possibly for 27 days. No signs or symptoms. I do all the social distancing and PPE/ sanitizers when I have to shop.

I work at a hospital so I've been exposed for weeks so I called our infection control and their only response was if I'm not sick, I need to come in and do my shifts.

My college kids were home when all this started so they are being tested and if negative, back to their college apartment to get away from DH.

what a cluster.  All bc DH thought he was Superman and wouldn't follow the rules

so frustrated with him

Ugh! Sorry you have to worry about getting sick or your kids getting sick because your husband was a jackass and decided to ignore medical/scientific FACT. It was very selfish for him to put you all at risk.

I think I would be "social distancing" at home, if for no other reason, because I would be pissed off he was such a selfish jackass.

He hasn't run a fever now for a while. He'll feel better one day then bad the next. Yesterday he felt short of breath but not bad enough to go to the ER.  He slept super late this morning so I snuck into the bedroom a few times to make sure he was breathing.  Today, he's not having breathing issues but has a nasty little headache.

I really don't need this. And I agree he has been a jackass. I had masks and sanitizer for everyone and their vehicles but would he use it?  No. At least me and the kids have been symptom free so far.

I'm sorry you have to deal with this. It must be exhausting to work at a hospital and then have to come home and nurse your husband too. I'm disapointed that your hospital is so short sighted as to insist that you come to work despite a documented case of covid-19 in your home. It is criminal to put your coworkers and the patients at risk like that.

They do the same at most hospitals - otherwise, they wouldn't have enough staff to work in hard hit areas. If they are following hospital guidelines for PPE they won't be putting anyone at risk.

It's suprising that so many health care professionals are the ones who have gotten sick if there are adequate preventative measures in place. When more staff get sick, there will be fewer staff available to work and if more patients get sick with covid-19 their hospital stays will be longer. There will also be more deaths. Short sighted is the nicest way to put it when hospitals are systematically and knowingly putting their staff and patients at unnecessary risk. Just because it is done everywhere does not make it any better.

NY State did antibody testing and found that healthcare workers had a lower rate of infection than the general public, even in hard-hit NYC. So we hear stories about healthcare workers getting sick, but it's really not at a high rate - PPE and handwashing works.

tbh most of the illness the heathcare workers get probably comes from outside of work.  At work they're constantly cleaning, masks, face shields, constant sanitation, etc.  Outside of work, not so much.

I work in nuclear and we recently heard that there is a plant (not one of ours) that was having some issues with positive cases.. they figured out it wasn't happening on the job.. but via after work socializing amongst the outage staff.. in the plant everyone was wearing proper ppe and distancing.. etc.. it was after hours hanging out.

That is downright horrifying.

It's the same at the hospital system I work in. But we are also required to wear masks all the time, are screened at the door, and in the actual hospital (I'm in an outpatient non-medical program), they are following even more strict PPE guidelines.

We do the screening too but I noticed over the past few weeks they dropped the question about living with a person who is currently being quarantined. Only question now is "are you sick"- check temp and grab a mask

It's widespread... The reality is we have to have hospital staff right now...  It's unfortunate. But no hospital staff means anyone that gets it is won't have access to treatment. Logically with how many people have it, it's in a lot of households.  Can't really avoid that as much now sadly Sad

I'm sorry to hear of your trouble.  Here's hoping for the best possible outcome.

Had you been getting regular tests before this?  It could be that you were infected before him and just never had any symptoms.. I believe they are now thinking that this is a much less deadly disease in rate.. and that many have had the virus with no symptoms at all.. people getting antibody tests... who never felt sick at all.  Working in a hospital setting.. I have to think the odds of you coming in contact might have been higher than the random running into a store thing... our state is now mandating masks..and while I carry one in my car... I was not necessarily wearing it when I wasn't going to be in a high traffic store.  I live in a fairly rural area... a total of 25 people in the county have tested positive.. and at this point.. probably half to 3/4 have recovered (they don't give "active" cases).

Hope he doesn't develop any worse symptoms and everyone makes out ok though... it is no fun being sick.. no matter what it is.

My son and I are both negative, my DH and daughter both tested positive. It's so odd bc I kiss my DH and don't have it. Bd visited from college and caught it.  BS lived with us, worked with DH on our place and was in close contact and didn't catch it. We sent BS to their college apartment to isolate and BD will be staying home another week before going back. Both DH and BD  are symptom free now

Sorry to hear about this but glad that it appears to be a minor case.

He should leave the house! He's the one who broke the "rules". Send him to a hotel.
