DH IS SO IRRESPONSIBLE
I told him to pay something with our personal check but no he decided to pay with a money order. Then I ask for the receipt but no he decides he'll give it to me later and I'm nagging him. Well a month later and the place never received the $400 we owed. And guess what?? He doesn't know where the receipt is. So my question is... Has this happened to anyone before? Is there any way for me to retrieve that money order that I suppose is lost in the mail? Anyway to get my money back? He paid for the money order with a debit card and the bank statement shows the transaction and a ten digit number next to it. Is there anything we can do???

I don't think he paid the
I don't think he paid the bill either. How can you lose a money order? And why was he paying the bill the HARDEST way possible? Surely writing a check in the comfort of your own home and popping it in your mailbox to be picked up is easier than going to 'wherever' and buying a money order and THEN organising payment. Something stinks in Denmark.
I assume he didn't lose it
I assume he didn't lose it because it was supposed to be sent somewhere so I assumed it was lost in the mail. What else could he do with the money order though? We have joint account so he can't deposit it into the account without me knowing.
I know he doesn't have any
I know he doesn't have any other accounts. Because we put my name on any other account he had. We went to the bank together. Also all the money he makes is given straight to me (I handle the money). I know when he works and when he doesn't and how much he makes. I have the password to his email where his job sends emails if he's picked up extra shifts. Which if he has, they still put the extra money on the check that he hands to me because when he doesn't, the check doesn't get deposited or he loses it (which we always find in his pants pocket or it just gets deposited a week or two later than id want. This is the first time anything like this has happened not the 5th time. So I don't know why everyone is automatically assuming he is lying and just being devious with it?
Does he attend casinos? Does
Does he attend casinos? Does he owe someone some money?
He had a problem with
He had a problem with gambling like 5 years ago. But that hasn't happened in a long time. I don't know if you've read my blog but he is and has been a very truthful and good husband/father. Even when he had a gambling problem, I was in the know. And we both owe a lot of student loans lol. But other than that, no
Oh and it wasn't a surprise
Oh and it wasn't a surprise to me that he lost the receipt. That's why I was nagging him to give it to me because he's the type that always loses debit cards and keys and wallets and licenses, etc. Didn't even cross my min he was lying to me but now you girls got me worrid
Depending on the creditor, it
Depending on the creditor, it is quite possible they 'lost it' or 'never received it'. This happened to me personally with mortgage companies during the recession. I sent checks, but they never received them. I started using certified mail.
As for the gambling problem, it is something to keep an eye on it. I've known recovering gamblers who were 20 yrs out of it, who got back in the game. I am not saying that is the issue, just be careful.
If it truly is just a mistake, and he forgot to give you the receipt or mail payment, tell him to find a way to come up with the money AGAIN , and let it be a learning experience. This is why my DH takes care of online payments, and I take care of the checks. I hate money orders for this reason.
Ugh yes he says he'll work
Ugh yes he says he'll work extra for it or just not buy something he's been wanting to buy for a while. But in the end we have a joint account so either way him losing the money is my loss too -_-
But yes as soon as he said he sent a money order I felt my heart drop because I know where this check was sent to, they aren't reliable at all
Um.....I once tried to get a
Um.....I once tried to get a money order using my check card (visa debit card) tied to my checking account because I'd forgotten my checkbook at home and wanted to mail a payment right away while I was at work. They wouldn't sell it to me. Said I had to pay cash for the money order. Maybe it was just their policy but maybe that's true of all money orders, I hardly ever use them so I don't know. I think yourr husband is lying to you about getting the money order and sending it in for that bill.
The debit card statement says
The debit card statement says he did buy it though. It says the exact place he got it and then the ten digit number so I doubt he is lying about getting the money order because there is proof on y bank statement
Hm......that ten digit
Hm......that ten digit number...try calling it. It could be a phone number for wherever the money went. It should say where he bought the money order if that's what the money was spent on. Generally it'll say "Walgreens" or whatever, not some random code. Seriously, dial a one first then those ten digits (possibly an area code and phone number) and see what happens. Or google it as if its a phone number. Do a reverse phone lookup on whitepages.com.
Thank you for the help and
Thank you for the help and not just judgement. The ten digit number starts with four zeros though so I doubt it's a phone number =[ it does day the store he bought the money order from though
Maybe that's the serial
Maybe that's the serial number for the money order, then? Try calling the store and ask them. Ask for a manager first, they're more likely to be helpful because a random person might not know and will just tell you the wrong thing. If this the serial number they should be able to track it and if not cashed put a stop payment on it and issue another.
If you have the number off
If you have the number off the money order you should be able to phone in and see if money was checked and when. I realize you don't have the actual back part of money order, but usually on the back is info on how to tell if received and cashed. You might try going to store, explaining DH is a fool and asking for the phone number or information that is on back of the money orders they sell. Once you have that you should be able to use the money order # on your statement to check if the thing was ever cashed.
Yes I just did that! They
Yes I just did that! They gave me a number and they said we have to print out bank statement, fill a form, and mail it with a processing fee of $40 and they MIGHT find it -_-
We use money orders to pay
We use money orders to pay DH's CS. BM won't open a bank account, so we use money orders so we can have record of what is paid.
We've not found a place that would let us purchase one with anything other than cash. Not that it isn't possible, but we've never found one.
I carry all of the stubs from our payments. There's a number on the back for "Moneygram" you can call (I don't know if all money orders are through them. That's what we get from Walmart.) but I know when I call to get the information for when each one of ours is cashed, I have to provide the assigned money order number (ours all begin with an "R" & are followed by 12 digits), the date of the purchase & the amount of the purchase.
As for the number on the bank statement, it's likely just a transaction number that is assigned by the bank.
We're trying to track down a draft from MIL's bank account with such a number from her statement, & even the bank can't tell us anything about what the draft is for. They said that number is just assigned as a transaction number for that particular draft.
I don't know if you have
I don't know if you have publix? But they do them with debit card. They go through western union. I'm beginning to think that money is gone =[

That's an expensive lesson to have to learn. That sucks. Sorry.
