OT-Crape Myrtles

KittyKat's picture

Hola! Ferretmom has me (and many of us!!) in "garden" mode now, and I have a question about crape myrtles (obviously...)

I live in PA, and they are not NATIVE here, but they CAN grow here. I purchased two very hearty ones, Dynamites (bright reds).
All winter I kept them inside, they BLOOMED a bit early in February, but now seem to be reblooming.

If anyone else is "crape myrtle obsessed" and can offer me ANY pointers, I'd be much obliged!! (Fertilizer, etc.) I want HAPPY CRAPES!! Smile

I'm so bad with flowers. Sad They shrivel up and die when I walk by.

The best organic fertilizer in the world is cow manure. It stinks but it's fantastic. Put some in the bottom of the hole before you put in the plant. Don't use too much or it could burn the roots. There are several good gardening sites out there. I recommend Birds and Bloom, they have great articles.

I love my crape myrtles! Their blooms last for so long and when other things are fading away, I have them for more color! I don't do much with mine except see that they get lots of water in the summer as it gets so hot here. I trim then down in the fall because I don't want them to be really tall as some of them that I have seen in my area can get. I just use the plant stakes once a year to feed them. I know you'll enjoy yours!
