Stepson moved out of our apartment and left his cat
Forums:
I'm just venting here. My 20yo stepson was living in our first-floor apartment this school year-- which we created for him with our bare hands out of a dungeon-like basement-- spent more than 15K doing it and no thanks yous--in fact his ex-wife objected when my husband said he should no longer send child support for him.
Anyway, stepson got a kitten when he moved in. On Friday, he moved out to spend the summer at his mom's and he LEFT THE CAT behind. My son and I went down to clean up the space (which was disgusting) and my son wound up with a rash covering his entire body.
Anybody want a cat?

Cats appear to be theme on here today!! And I'd love another one (I have two) but more cats are forbidden!

Cat's about 6 months old and seems to be a nice cat.
I'm just shocked at the lack of parental guidance here. Not happy with anyone in this scenario, including myself for allowing him to get the kitten-- but I never dreamed he would just abandon it.
I hope you're able to find
I hope you're able to find the little one a good home!
Some suggestions from a former vet tech/rescue person:
Please do not advertise the kitten on craigslist or in your local free ads. Ask for a small adoption fee (say $35) that way you know that they're not going to use the kitten for dog fighting bait or snake food and they'll actually (hopefully) be a good home.
Thanks!

I am so tempted to take it in since DH has wanted a cat forever and I was raised with them and I am just a short drive from you, but I am afraid we wouldn't have the time for it with the baby coming.
Perhaps you can take it to North Shore Animal League? They'll take them if you donate I think it's $50.
Cats don't need a big time
Cats don't need a big time commitment, really. I raised 4 rescued kittens right after my daughter was born. Took me 15 minutes to clean out litter boxes and be sure everyone was fed. When my daughter would nap, I'd lay down and play with the kitties. The good thing about cats is they're not dogs. They don't need to be walked
please no craigslist!!!
please no craigslist!!! Petfinder works fairly well- i got my pup from there, and found a home for one of my feline furbabies that way but it was harder cuz he was full adult... (i still well up w/ tears at the thought, but OSS was HIGHLY allergic...)
*sniff, sniff*
ETA- north shore, what a fantastic idea if u cant find a home
thanks guys. I just called
thanks guys. I just called North Shore and they aren't taking any kittens or cats.
I have contacted about 15 pet rescue people (referred by out vet and other shelters) and they all respond that they get dozens of requests a day and cannot take any more cats. Losing hope here... I do want to model proper animal treatment for my own kids.
dont lose hope yet - it took
dont lose hope yet - it took me probably 6 months to place my two furbabies. but they were both adults and that takes longer. a 6m old kitten shouldnt take too long, but i guarantee it wont be overnight. have you tried looking upstate yet? may be plenty of no-kills in rockland or westchester.
Also... is there a way to
Also... is there a way to post a pet for adoption on Petfinders? I'm on their website, but I'm not seeing that option. Thanks!
you used to be able to post,
you used to be able to post, but i cant see anyplace to do so, and in the "help" section it only refers you elsewhere- maybe they're overwhelmed...
but on the left side of their page is a place where you can search for an animal welfare organization based on your location... like i said before, you could check in westchester or rockland counties, or even over towards fairfield CT
good luck!
Can we go back to complaining
Can we go back to complaining about how shockingly irresponsible it was to leave the cat behind??
Some people are just like
Some people are just like that, unfortunately. SD wanted a dog at our house and she wanted a little long-haired dog. I'm not fond of little dogs in general and sure didn't want a long-haired one. Plus SD was only with us half the time so the other half we would be responsible for this dog. I told her no. Later we got a family dog and boy did she resent the hell out of that dog. Too bad! She'd already had to give up a cockatiel for not taking care of it, I wasn't going to let her move on to something bigger.
Wow, I wonder if her either
Wow, I wonder if her either doesn't want the cat anymore or expects you guys to take of it while he's gone, and being a cat owner myself, yeah they can be low maintenance pets, but they still need fresh litter, food drinks and all that. Too bad I'm not close enough to have the cat, I love animals. Has he called at all to check on the cat? Does the cat seem to miss him? Just wondering. Hopefully, if you give the pet away, you'll put ur foot down when he tries to bring in another pet. I just can't believe he didn't think to ask and make sure it was okay to leave the cat. I'm a stepmom with no kids, but I can be dramatic at times, and I would have had a field day with this one, but then I would just keep the cat because I love animals, but SD would have gotten a earful for leaving it at the house and ASSUMING that we would care for it. Hey maybe you should ask for CS- Cat Support from him while he's away. Is he an adult? I would send him a bill for taking care of it.
Just a follow-up on the cat
Just a follow-up on the cat drama. I did find a cat rescue group that will take the cat to a big adoption event on saturday and will foster him even if they can't get him adopted on Saturday.
Just paid the vet $350 for neutering, shots and tests etc, but there is an end in sight.
Yet another crack in my marriage though.
