good bed time?

What do you all think is a good bed time for a 10 year old? Weekends and weekdays?

We have BD12, SD12, BD8, SS7.

The BD12 and SD12 is 9 but they are to be upstairs by 830.
The BD8 and SS7 are 8 in their rooms lights out by 830.

This generally applies to everyone but SS7 - he pretty much is up until the last of the older girls is down.

It really depends what time they have to get up in the morning.

SS10, Sd9, and BS3 go to bed at 8 weekdays.... We have to get up by 5:45 in the morning

Weekends bedtime is 9.... And no one is allowed out of bed until 7a

For me, it went like this:

Elementary school age - 8pm
Junior high/middle school - 9pm
High school - 10pm

Once they hit 16ish, IF they kept their grades up AND weren't late to school or bitchy the next day, they could self manage their own bedtimes.

It's worked really well for me. I did need to loosen up the bedtime on occasion as kids were involved in different activities that had different ending times.

Thanks, I think that 10:30-11pm is too late. By that time I'm ready to go to bed and I get no quiet time with DH.

Bedtimes. My SIL never had a bed-time for her kids. I never understood that. Maybe I'm old school. Her kids went to bed at all hours, at a young age - like 1-2am and then she had trouble getting them up for school obviously. She subscribes to the 'be your kids friend' idea, whereas I'm more strict.

For young kids I think, in my opinion, 7pm is a good time to have a nice story after brushing teeth and baths. By that time it's not too late and not too early. It's hard when it's summer and the sun is still out.

For kids that are tweens maybe 9:30 is a good time to go to bed, they can read a book in bed but no video games or phone or computer. Quiet time and if they can't sleep, they can read, like many people do.

In my experience as a parent, kids thrive on routine. Once they hit their teens though they can stay up later as long as they're being responsible (i.e. just reading or doing homework - same as the tween ages). They can get to stay up and watch a movie maybe or have some time on the phone with their friends.

My two cents Wink

My two SDs are 11 and 6. They go to bed at 8.30pm weekdays and 9.30pm at the weekends. This is a new rule that I brought in myself a few months ago as they didn't have a proper routine and they were very, very miserable and tired and grumpy at weekends and never wanted to get up for school. It all works fine now and the kids have been in a better mood ever since, therefore so have we. x

At 10 it is recomended they get 10-11 hours of sleep. so, depends when they wake up.
