Non Specific Vulvovaginitis

SonyaJ's picture

Ok, so this is a new term for me. My 8 year old SD has been battling a horrible smelling yellow/green discharge for over a year. After fighting with the pediatrician that this was normal and an ultrasound came back normal, they referred us to the Children's Hospital in DC. Her diagnosis was non specific vulvovaginitis. And the female doctor said this is common with no worries or concern. She was given no treatment. She was given an exam and said everything looked ok. What is bothering me is no culture or swab was done.

I am shocked that they consider the foul smelling discharge coming out of her to be normal and no swab or nothing to make sure it is what she says it is. Am I looking too much into this?

Has anyone else been through this with your pre-puberty child?

And this article says the discharge should be cultured. Thanks fightincrazytrain.

Anyone out there been through this with their child?

My daughter at age 19 had "bacterial vaginitis" (not sure if I'm spelling it right). She knew something was wrong because her ladybits smelled really bad. Even though she's not a virgin (blurgg) it wasn't linked to any sexual activity (meaning she wasn't sexually active when she got it), but rather something like swimming in bad water or exercising too long in the same underwear. She took one big horse pill of antibiotics and it cleared it right up. Smile Hope this helps.

She wasn't given any medication and no swab. This is what is concerning me. I would hope a doctor at a large children's hospital would know best but I am really having my doubts now.

Bacterial vaginosis can be cured with a cream. It's not the same cream that they use for yeast infections. I'm confused here as to why they won't treat her. It can't be pleasant to have discharge like this. I know I wouldn't want to have this. I did have bacterial vaginosis and the cream cleared it right up. I wish I could remember the name of the medication. It was a prescription. Sometimes things just get out of whack down there. I hope your daughter feels better soon. Good luck. Sorry, I have all sons so I can only speak from my experience. If I remember what it was I will post it. I didn't have vaginitis but it sounds similar.

I think the pill for BV (Flagyl) might work better than any creams, esp for an 8 year old girl who isn't used to having her privates looked at or touched. Years ago, I had an issue with recurring BV, and after a few rounds (yes, a few, YUCK) of the MetroGel, I took the Flagyl and it went away and never came back. Poor girl.

That's what it was called; metrogel! I agree, taking a pill would be much better for an eight year old. Having to deal with the application of cream could be traumatic for a little girl. I had abdominal pain at 12 years old and they did a pelvic exam on me. Needless to say this was traumatic for me and when I went for my first pap when I was much older I was scared to death! I hope this child gets better; poor little girl.

But everyone agrees that a culture should have been done? I just feel like the doctor just brushed this problem off. I mean when I showed her the underwear, and I am sure she could smell it, she said "this is all you are worried about".
