MY 16 year old SD fancies herself an "artist". I am not going to say that she can't draw because she can. I don't care for the things that she draws because that is not my idea of art but whatever. She draws damn cartoon characters ALL THE TIME and I am expected to Oh and Ah over each and every one of them. Show me something artistic and I might get excited! Rather than pull her grades up and focus on the areas that she needs to get her through high school...she spends her time doodling and drawing. I am all for hobbies but this is not going to be her profession. However she seems to think that she will make it in the anime world coping other people's cartoons. I don't want to discourage her from her dreams but she needs to have a "fall back" (AKA REAL) plan for the future. DH thinks her drawings are AMAZING...of course.

My girl step thinks she will grow up to be Katy Perry. I almost pissed myself when she declared that the microphone is what makes her voice sound weird. LMAO- No honey, the microphone doesn't make your voice sound weird, IT IS weird. SMH..........

HAHAHA This one thinks she can sing too. She's not HORRIBLE but she's not ever going to make a career out of it. She always tells me..."I don't see why it's fair that I have to learn math and science but other kids don't have to learn art and singing." Because you little shit...basic skills are needed for LIFE!

She started out copying (drawing whatever you want to call it) Sonic the Hedgehog. Now it's some other ridiculous cartoon that she is infatuated with. Every drawing is basically the SAME DAMN thing. I imagine she should be good at it when that's ALL she ever does! Be original!

EvilAngel's picture

She doesn't either. Her "original" work just looks like a cross between Sonic and humans. Basically a human head on Sonic.

My friend from highschool was told to get a backup plan because she was going to make it big as an actress. Every frigging day on facebook its a complaint about her tips. She waitresses and bartends.

Her last "back up" plan was to be a real estate agent. I told her I thought she better rethink that. You have to have people skills and a personality to do that. I am afraid she lacks both of those as well.

This is my EXACT fear! At 16, I was not sitting at home drawing shit...I had a J-O-B!!! I have told her father that she is NOT living with us for the rest of her life. It's basically her or me and that point. When she turns 18, she better have a job or be going to college or both. And hopefully she will be OUT OF MY HOUSE! But at the rate she is going now, that won't happen at 18. I am not spending the rest of my life raising an adult child!

If your SD's father is anything like my SS's mother, you may have to repeat this several times to them before it sinks in.

"I will NOT support an adult in this house who has no ambition or prospects. College? Military? Trade? Yes, I will support them. Drop out of HS, working 6 hours a week flipping burgers and spending the rest of their waking hours playing on the XBOX? Nope. They get 30 day notice the moment they turn 18 to get the hell out."

I wouldn't discouage her but she shows no originality. It's all the same thing over and over. Her dad finally stopped buying her expensive art supplies because she's failing at her other subjects. If she wants to draw, that's fine with me but she needs to get her other classes in order. A friend of mine is a fantastic artist! She went to art school, got a degree and now can't find a job in that field. So she went back to school for a different degree.

She took art last semester. DH is not going to pay for her to take art classes outside of school while her grades are the was they are. She's already supposed to be getting tutoring help during school for her grade in Geometry but she lies about that. They have designated times for tutoring during school hours but she insists that they don't. I guess she thinks we aren't bright enough to call the teacher and ask about that.

Your SD16 can't possibly make it in the anime world copying other people's cartoons! No way! Because MY SD13 sits and copies every anime character she can find. She never does homework or studies for tests, she just pulls out the doodle pad, draws a big head and big eyeballs and goes all anime. SD13 identifies as a boy and has no people skills. She used to be bright and confident and now she is very socially awkward.

I feel bad for her, but sometimes I just think she'll see....she'll have to figure it out on her own.

Oh but wait! She DOES have a back-up plan. She wants to be an engineer. Um, NO, you don't have those kind of brains, skiddo.

Sounds just like my SD. She is VERY socially awkward! She had no friends. NEVER leaves the house...I mean to even go outside, unless she has to go to school. She does have an extremely dorky boyfriend. How she pulled that off I will never know. Never does homework, never studies. Her grades SUCK but she always has time to draw those stupid characters from Invader Zim. I also used to feel bad for her. She used to ask me, "How did you have so many friends in high school?" I never know how to respond. Because I wasn't an asshole? She just turned 16 back in Feb. Her dad wanted to throw her a sweet 16 party and I was ok with that but how do you throw a party for a kid that has ZERO friends? And she wanted a HUGE party! Never happened because she could never come up with a list of friends for us to invite. After talking to her I know why she doesn't have friends though and I don't feel sorry for her. She's an asshole and has a shitty attitude.

Her back-up plan for a while WAS to be a real estate agent. Ummmm...you have to have a personality for that career. Not going to happen.

I think 16 might be a little old for dreams of being an artist, doesn't the school guidance department tell the kids that 100,000,000 set out every year to make it as an artist and only a few survive.
Maybe a talk with the guidance department will help her see that she should maybe look into graphic artist, with computers instead. lol

EvilAngel's picture

I think it's too old too. I don't want to discourage her dreams but really? I had a job when I was 16...I wasn't watching and drawing cartoons. She's one of the kids I would have def made fun of in high school.
