Interstellar - watched it - don't read on if you haven't seen it yet..
Saw Interstellar last night. (Don’t read on if you want to watch it and haven’t seen it yet..)
Felt rather let down as I was expecting great things from other planets etc.. the entire movie was based on (IMO), daddy’s guilt from leaving his daughter to save humankind. She was 10 and he also had a son. Damn movie must’ve struck a chord with SO. Son was loyal and stayed in contact with dad whilst dad is up in space. Daughter refused to speak to him for years. Naturally, daddy focuses on darling daughter and his son might as well have not existed. I was disappointed with the movie. We took BS16 with us and this is roughly the conversation in the car on the way home..
Me: “So.. what did youse think? I hoped to see other worlds..weird creatures..but wow.. the wormhole was fantastic!”
SO: “Great movie! Isn’t it amazing..the power of love a father has for his daughter!! Did you realise that HE created the wormhole for her?!!”.
Me: “…um..I think the wormhole was created by others who were sent earlier? It is a bit confusing that...”
BS: “Yeh..I enjoyed it...but it was way too emotional. The dad felt too guilty from leaving his daughter..way too emotional..he operated on guilt.”
This is from the scene where the main character goes to say goodbye to his daughter in her bedroom and she is really upset and they both end up bawling. He drives away barely able to see from the tears streaming down his face.
SO: “but it showed that love is the true force of the universe – the love the father had for his daughter....”
Me: “hmm..it was a bit over-the-top emotional and yes, I can see where the dad felt guilty – but he was going to save human kind..and to secure a better future for his kids....he wasn’t actually abandoning her…and she had her brother and Grandpa there with her”
BS: “yeh.. that was a bit sad.. the son was older, so he had to handle it like a man..but I felt sorry for him because you could see that their dad felt guilty about his daughter.. so yeh, that was sad”.
Me: “yep..I felt bad for him too.... “
SO ** crickets **”.
The damn message that these recent movies seem to be sending is that the love between a father and his daughter is so sacred..and stronger than the love he has for his son or anyone else for that matter. Son has to be stoic and accept it. I won’t be watching Chris Nolan movies for a long tine now.
Is that our future world? Where dads are quite happy to just be with their daughters and to hell with everything and everyone else? A world run by manipulative daughters ruling their guilty dads? In the movie, she even blatantly disobeys him when he tells her to stay home while he drives off to investigate something. She disobeys him..he laughs it off and off they drive.. some lesson in discipline!
Has anyone else seen it? What did you guys think?

Ignoring the daaaadddyy
Ignoring the daaaadddyy daughter crap, I liked it. Effects were cool, good suspense.
But the emotional aspects... Yes, I noticed daaady couldn't have seemed to care less about his son, it was allllll about the girl. Humanity can go hang, I need to get back to my daaaaaaauuuuuughter. Oh honey, I traveled through a black hole for you, because daddy loves you! I had to laugh at the end though, how they chat for a couple minutes, then she kicks him out to be with HER family. No mention of the son, or anyone else.
And all the stuff about 'your kids are the last thing you see before you die.' Huh? I've never heard such child-centric nonsense. What happened to how the old war movies used to do it, 'tell my wife, I love her'? Not 'tell my daughter I love her, and tell my wife/son/anyone else hi'.
I loved it. BUT, I thought
I loved it.
BUT, I thought the ending was bad. The father and the daughter spend the entire movie wanting to be together again and the last scene he spends like 1minute with her and leaves :? :? He has grandkids and great grandkids all around and no one says Boo to him :? :?
We also found that
We also found that baffling..would've thought he'd have been super excited to meet his extended family..but noooo..focus ALL on his daughter..completely and utterly.. it was just..surreal. Even the way he was gazing at her.. that was uncomfortable 'cos he ignored everyone else.
Also the fact that the daughter didn't introduce her husband and family was weird. Then, when she sent him off to join Anne Hathaway's character to start life on a new planet..good grief.. they didn't even know if SHE wanted him there, but off he went..with daughter's blessing.. It was a helluva let down and just sent the wrong message (to us anyway), that a Father's love for his daughter knows no bounds..and forget about everyone else - even his own Son - just bloody pathetic.
