OT - C25K (after one month of running)

Drac0's picture

Well it's been a month now since I started this program. I should be on week 4 of the program but I am taking things VERY slowly and am only on week 2 of the program which consists of running for 90s and walking for 2m. When I started, I only went out for my runs twice a week to allow myself to recuperate. It's getting a little easier now and I am running 3 times a week.

At first my leg muscles were stiff for a few days. Now they are only stiff for a few hours. My endurance level is definetly improving.

The results are starting to show. Not much to brag about; I've lost about 2 lbs and this morning I actually tightened my belt a knotch!

DW is definetly encouraging me. She bought me some new ear buds and a wrist strap for my phone.

So now I am trying to find some tunes to listen to while I run...

I love my beers too! Sadly, those pints of golden sunshine are the WORST inhibitors to any exercise regimen. Sad

Tell him about the C25K program. It really is easy (okay maybe not for me, but it really is working).

My neighbor was the one who first encouraged me. I didn't see her all winter and when I crossed paths with her I noticed she had dropped quite a few pounds. I asked her about it, thinking she may have gone on a diet and she told me about C25K.

Oh yes, I stretch before and after my workout!

Hmmm...I'll definetly keep this in mind. Thanks!

I remember being advised that it is better to do "dynamic" stretching before running and to do stretching that targets key muscle groups after the workout. So before my run I do a couple of sun salutations and lunges. Afterwards I do the leg stretches.

Actually it's good advice and it makes sense. When in a rush, stretch afterwards instead of before. Got it!

Hee hee, yeah like Ladyface mentioned above, I too run in the mornings (I get up at 5am for my runs).

But hey, who knows? Beer for breakfast wasn't the only crazy thing I did in my college years! Biggrin

Draco, there are TONS of free running podcasts, some are all music, some part pep-talk part music.

LOL!

When I was looking for apps, I thought the EXACT SAME THING!!!

"25k!?? Isn't that a marathon?"

if you have an android phone go to goodle play and under free aps look up music maniac pro.

I have it on my phone... free downloads of literally thousands of songs, look up your favorite artists and down load what ever songs of theirs are your favs.

I just looked it up. There seems to be a lot of fake apps out there calling themselves music maniac pro. Any clue on figuring out which one is authentic? Or are they all pretty much the same?

Well done! I've been wandering how you were getting on. Keep up the good work.

I used to go to the gym regularly too but then DW, my bios and SS took whatever energy I had so I quit. I didn't miss the gym since I was pre-occupied with my new family. Now that my bios are a little older and can "fend for themselves" a little I have a little bit more free time. Oh but at the height of SS being a royal PITA, I really REALLY needed some kind of physical activity as a de-stresser and I started to miss going to the gym.

Good on you both for taking up running though. When your granddaughter starts walking, believe me, you'll be glad that you have the physical acumen to chase after her. That's one of the reasons I took up running; I need to be in shape to chase after "Scrounger" and the "Cooler King" when they escape.

I swear, whoever invited child locks never figured on engineers having children!

Couch 2 5K is a pretty great system! I used that and when I actually ran my first 5k, I did 15min miles!

Crazy, I just started this program a couple months ago as well.

I have knee problems from years of playing ice hockey and baseball, so after week 5 I had to quit because I was having really bad knee pain. I'm on hiatus now, but plan to start back up with the goal of running a 5k and 10k before I turn 40 (5 years away).

In the meantime, DW and I are doing Power 90. Seems to be easier on my knees and is still a good workout. We're on Day 30 of 90 today.

Yes, you can control it better. There is still jumping, kicking, etc - but I don't need the knee brace to do this stuff. Running, for whatever reason I do. I think it is because I'm flat footed and tend to impact the ground very hard when I run.

Trail running is out of the question around here, really. Not many trails - we live near a city, and we live in the deep south, where temperatures are consistently above 90.

The year before I met my wife I was in better shape, and I went through the entire P90x program. It was HARD for me - especially the yoga and pull-ups, but I had never been in better shape. Then I stopped working out, and we're trying to get started again since we found out I have a heart problem that is exacerbated by inactivity.
