My grandma always had us use peppermint oil soap in our hair, washed our clothes with it and sprayed it around the house on furniture. She said it killed them. As an adult, anytime I got a notice the school was having trouble, I washed everyone's hair with peppermint oil soap and we never got it. Someone posted in the forums awhile ago about using Listerine and some people replied that it had worked for them. Also, apparently there is now a shampoo and conditioner that has peppermint in it.
The main thing to remember is that you will probably have to treat more than once. You have to wash all clothes, spray all furniture, bag up all stuffed animals etc, but you have to repeat several times about a week or so apart to catch them as they hatch in case you missed any nits when combing. Good luck!

Found the link for the Listerine lice discussion so here you go: http://www.steptalk.org/node/87309
There was someone who used something called the Cetaphil skin cleanser method as well.

I know it's really frustrating but it's just one of those things that happen to kids sometimes like chicken pox or the flu. You'll get through it and getting it is not a reflection on you.

I've heard several drops tree tea oil added to shampoo will help as well, although some say it gets rid of it and others say it only helps prevent it?!?

One strange remedy i have heard that i know is totally false is soaking the head and hair in cod liver oil... An aunt of mine tried it with her kids.... The smell is HORRID, it gets everywhere, dosent wash out easily and just dint do a darn thing to the bugs!

Wash items in hot water, boil brushes or toss them and get new, don't forget jackets, and hats.
Remembering to retreat and get all the nits out is key and time consuming, but has to be done. I always retreat the whole house when SO's kid gets them (every other week when we get her she has them and about every 3 months it's a horrible infestation whenever BM keeps them longer)
In the nearly 2 years she's been coming with lice no one in my house has gotten them, and I chalk it up to treating everything in the house, adding a little tea tree oil to the water bottle we use to brush out our hair, and daily washing of her bedding when she's here. There are a lot of good websites with info you can search.
Treat, retreat and stay vigilant in case it needs done again.

O no, that can happen, so don't feel bad.Follow the treatments through and in between put on conditioner masks , wrap hair in foil and let it on 30 minutes .Don't forget to wash sheets etc.
I am so angry at the moment since SD always brings us headlice .She has really thick long hair.BM spends rather time straightening her 7 year olds hair than bothering about follow up treatments.
I suggested to SO to give her a hair cut but he looks at me as if I suggest to chop off her arm.The best thing is to cut long hair a little bit so the treatments work better and it is easier- I am not suggesting to shave , only maybe a cute shoulder lenghth bob!!! I am so angry that so pisses his pants about it and is scared of BM as it seems , who doesn't care about her daughters head lice anyway.Plus his princess must have long hair although it doesn't even look nice and is full of lice.Where is the logic?????????

bd17 had this problem for damn near 3 years straight in junior high. i would treat her, she would be fine, a week later she was infested again. i'm positive that someone at school was not being treated and that's how it kept happening. our house was fine. none of the rest of us had it. just her, over and over again. i called the school and told them what was happening, and by then the damn things seemed resistant to OTC treatments and i was FED UP. i took her to the dr and he prescribed a cream that took care of it once and for all. haven't had a problem in several years now.

Whether or not you can do this may depend on the age of your daughter, but dye your hair. Seriously. It works like a damned charm (I'm assuming because of the ammonia or something). My BD came home with head lice after spending the night with a friend and gave it to her brother. I dyed their hair (they'd been wanting to do it anyway) and it was GONE. Killed the eggs and all.

Skids had it last year and by the time I noticed it was bad. I think BM knew, but didn't say anything. They're too little to dye their hair, but I went ahead and did mine and my bios, just to be sure. None of us ended up with it, but we had to do the lice shampoo and washing and spraying everything in the damned house three times because BM wouldn't do the same at her house.

My daughter got it last year and thank God we caught it in the beginning. It's alot of work Sad

Anyway, I used mayo and a shower cap for an hour or 2. And then I used alcohol and a nit comb and went through EVERY strand of hair. Took care of it once and kept checking her, she hasn't gotten it since.

I also did a hot oil treatment on her head bc the alcohol was so drying

Expensive furnishings these days won't stay thus over boss chair time because it deprecates in price over time. so as associate degree investment it is not a possible proposition within the long haul.
