Its kinda catchy...

So, a package came in the mail today for SD17not yet18, from Amazon. The sender is itatoo.

https://www.amazon.com/s?srs=10222274011

Should I worry? Im not. I did tell husband so now HE can do the worrying. of course I google, and came up with Penal Code 653.

While I applaud SD Power Sulk for her creativity in the face of obstacles (no job but somehow an item looking like tatoo supplies appears...) and I have always encouraged her to monetize her creativity, this is not exactly what I envisioned and hopefully it goes in a positive direction...although giving unlicensed ink probably wont go in a positive direction.

Whatevs, husband tells me that he will ask her "whassup".

Edited about an hour later....

I called and spoke with Sweetheart Niece and bounced it off of her. She helped her cousin who is now a popular tattoo artist in southern california and SHE said its a huge deal, NOT a "whatever" thing. If she tattoos a minor and parents want to sue, they can put a lien against our house. If she tattoos a minor and it becomes infected and parents decide to sue, they can put a lien on our house.

SD powersulk has never ever had to think of repercussions because she has never had to suffer repercussions. Plus she has nothing to lose, and more importantly Toxic Troll has nothing to lose.

But yes, you sure can buy a beginners tattoo kit on amazon!

Another Edit from a comment below...

option 1 - withhold package because I know whats in it. I know its related to illegal activity until she turns 18 in a few months.

What if she tries to force my hand in this? Threatens me with something? She has recorded me against my wishes at least once that I know of. She can do some damage - not because I did anything bad but she can make bad things up and present them as the truth to everyone and who will they believe?

option 2 - set packages on her bed as usual. dont say anything at all and pretend like I dont know. Pretend it all doesnt exist and then she can do whatever. Maybe its a custom tattoo for her mother Toxic Troll, or someone she knows who is over 18. Maybe she wants to be a tattoo artist and she bought the fake skins to practice and when she turns 18 she wants to intern for someone who will teach her the ropes and the agreement was made on the understanding that she would get her beginner kit and practice first. I wouldnt want to be holding her back from a possible source of income and success.

option 3 - give over packages AFTER detailed discussion. Promises must be made no humans until after 18 including herself.

They can sue you because she decided to tattoo another kid? Ugh kids are such a liability.

So, a minor cannot get a tattoo in California. I do not know (yet) the laws about a minor GIVING a tattoo to an adult (over 18 here)

Also, if someone sues a minor the PARENTS are completely 100% responsible. When SD Feral Forger decided to steal from JC pennys at 17, her PARENTS had to pay the fine. HuSBAND paid the fine.

My now 18-year-old was doing self tattoos with pen ink and my sewing needles. They had 4 by the time i needed to sew something and noticed. I don't think these kids realize tattoos are forever (or very expensive to remove.) When you talk about Powersulk, it always reminds me a little of my youngest. They sound similar, except mine doesn't sulk. But mine does procrastinate with schoolwork, is always failing till the end of the semester (they do pull it together at the end but it stresses me), and seems to have similar interests.

yeah. Well hopefully you never had to worry about liens on your home and lawsuits as a result of your youngest shenanigans.

Its not what she intends to do, its what she CAN and is CAPABLE of doing, and Im having to go through all these scenarios. I forgot the possibility that shes wanting to do this on her own skin (still illegal and still dangerous)

Sounds like Powersulk needs a launch plan. I hope she is being told that she needs to work toward being an independent adult with life skills and the means to support herself. If that's the case, she shouldn't be your legal problem much longer.

CLove's picture

ahem. This is not happening that I know of, except maybe how to get free money.

Of course, it wont surprise anyone that SD62, when a teen, tsttooed a cross on her arm with a needle and pen.  It was really quite a scene to parent her as a teen.   When she matured a little, she realized it wasn't quite the thing so we went to a dermatologist and had it removed $$$.

you are why I cry

You guys paid to have it removed?! I told my kid they are stuck with them, unless they get a good job and make enough money to pay for it.

My thought is to mitigate the risks until she turns 18.  I would not put this in DH's hands. I would tell DH what he will do and have your attorney tell DH that if PS mutulates herself or another minor the liabilities could leave you both without a home, and with a massive financial liability if not criminal liabilities.

Though a tattoo is not a school shooting, recently a father was convicted of involuntary manslaughter for his son perpetrating a school shooting because he did not intervene to prevent it.  If a minor PS tattoo victim gets a fatal infection  or loses an appendage from PS perforating them with her Amazon tattoo starter kit the potential liabilites to you and DH are intollerable IMHO.

Do not give her the kit until her B-day or HS graduation whichever is the later.  Do not risk that she turns 18 before HS graduation, damages a minor, and because she is not yet out of HS she is not fully emancipated.

I would get a lawyer consult on this.  If it comes from a lawyer you can hopefully deflect PS hurt fee fees directed at you as well as it may force your DH to actually do something rather than the usual avoidant ignore the obvious.

I think you should stay out of it. Leave the package on the porch and ignore it. She is going to know it was delivered, and she is going to figure out that you are the one who has it. No good will come from you getting involved in this. Yes, it is theoretically possible for the kind of lawsuit you have described - but the odds are pretty low. On the other hand, the odds are very good that if you keep that package it will cause huge problems in your household.

And I would agree. But this involved needles and skin pucturing equipment.

And Im willing to bluster through any storm at this point. PLUS Im going to have digital records. I hyave already taken pictures, and texted about it, so that I can go on record about this issue.

That pagage will go to the dump.  ASAP.  Nothing comes into my home what I do not want in it.  Tell her to move out, or back to BM to do unlawfully things. You have to go through training to be a tattoo person.  Knowing public health laws. Cleaning of equipment, changing needles between each person. Not to infect other people.  A person with hep C or HIV can infect everyone else if not properly dealt with.

Clove, have you ever looked up the term catastrophizing? It's when you're triggered by something and all you can think of is the worst case scenarios. It occupies your mind and ramps up your anxiety.

I think that's what you're doing here. You are so hyper vigilant and I know that the life you've led with your husband and his kids has traumatized you.

Stay out of it. Leave the package on her bed. She's lazy. How many musical instruments did you buy that she never used? I seriously doubt that she will get farther than putting a DOT on herself or someone else before they wimp out.

She will be 18 soon. Let her bring out her little kit and brag about how she's going to be a tattoo artist. That's when you let her know that she can take her tattoo business elsewhere, regardless of her age - it's not happening in your house. And if you find she's doing it, you'll confiscate the tattoo kit.

If you stay neutral, she may just announce her new endeavor. Once she announces it, send her a text to let her know that she's not allowed to tattoo anyone in your house. That way you have a digital record of it.

Breathe. Let it go. ((HUGS))

I understand why you might think that I am overreaective, however I think that this is warranted. The more I learn about this stuff, the more convinved I am doing the right thing withholding the materials. I am relying on hubsand to really get across to her the severity of things.

She HAS to be 18 and register to give tattoos to anyone here in California. California is an EXTREMELY litigious state. You cant throw a stone anywhere without hitting someone with a law degree. Ridiculous things people sue for. My family has been sued many times for many diff things. Even hiring a lawyer to fight a ridiculous lawsuit will put us financially in danger.

Its simply a risk, and not worthwhile allowing it.

I turn and look the other way 99% of the times with SD13 since I'm disengaged. I would stand up to this one too if SD wanted to start tattooing underage. I'm NOT going to be liable for dumb decisions. It's literally the law. She could be mad at me if she wanted. Don't care.

If SK wants to pursue these tattoo dreams, why doesn't she start shadowing someone at a shop? I'm sure they look for cleaning people all the time. This way she can get an idea of what it actually entails.

The daughter of DW's childhood BFF started interning at a tattoo shop when she was 16, she was always a talented sketch artist.  She decided tattoo art was what she wanted to do.  Her parents supported it, she worked with a reputable shop, and ended up with a decent clientel by the time she turned 18.  She has in her early 20s now and works full time as a tattoo artist. both her mom and her dad sport a number of her works.  They already had some ink so letting their daughter hone her craft on their skin was a win win for both of them.  They now have $Tens-of-thousands in beautiful work that they paid nothing for and she earned her stripes on mom and dad's flesh.

Not my thing, but.... it is a thing....  that many enjoy and some make a decent living at.

DW's BFF's kid, was a HS honor student, competitive award winning HS artist, and works her ass off.

As for PS, she has next to zero chance of success due to her proven lack of work ethic, etc...  I truly hope I am wrong though.
