O/T Possible Pregnancy Complication

CastleJJ's picture

Over the weekend, I felt off. I was nauseous, weak, fatigued, and just felt downright crummy. I'm 33 weeks pregnant, so I chalked it up to normal third trimester symptoms. I mean what pregnant woman in the third trimester doesn't feel tried and blah? On Sunday night, I developed itchiness on my abdomen. I have lots of deep, red stretch marks there so I googled it and it said it can either be due to the stretching skin or it can be a condition called PUPPP, which is like pregnancy chicken pox, and its a rash that develops on your stretch marks. It is not serious, doesn't hurt the baby, and is generally treated with over-the-counter creams. PUPPP resolves itself after birth.

So today, I called my OB's office and they told me to use hydrocortisone cream and benadryl and to update them if it didn't improve. Tonight, after work, I felt crummy again, so I took a nap. When I woke up, the itchiness had spread to my hands, arms, chest, neck, and face. I called a friend of mine and was telling her about it and she warned me about a condition she had during pregnancy called cholestasis, which is serious and requires immediate testing and if positive, induction, as it can be dangerous for the baby. I called the OB on call tonight and she confirmed that it sounds like cholestasis based on my symptoms and that I need to go in first thing tomorrow to be tested.

So tomorrow morning, I am going in for testing and based on those results, our baby girl could be arriving much sooner than planned. I'm not nervous per se, because I was a preemie born at 31 weeks. I am more so nervous about the possible delivery and/or recovery, since I have never been through it before and I thought I had more time to mentally prepare. I'm trying not to put the cart before the horse, but it's hard. DH has already set up the pack n' play, cleaned the house, and installed the car seat tonight since our call with the doctor. DH never experienced pregnancy with SS, since BM didn't allow his involvement until well after SS was born, so DH has been getting into the nesting and preparing stage, which is cute to watch him do. He told me he is nervous because it is all new to him, including having a child in the home full-time. We are in no way prepared for baby girl's arrival if she were to arrive, but we are doing the best we can and have a lot of family/friends that are willing to step in and help if needed.

Take care of yourself. Positive vibes for you and your baby girl. I had massive anxiety throughout my entire pregnancy, so maybe I'm not the best judge, but I found the last few weeks to be extremely nerve-wracking and just wanted everything to be safe for both me and baby. That said, 33 weeks is well enough along that your baby will likely have to do a stint in the NICU, but should be fine. I was a 32-weeker and didn't have any adverse effects.
After she arrives, make sure everyone is taking care of you. Worry about yourself and your baby. Let DH and everyone else take care of the rest!

I hope all goes well and good health for you and your baby! I'm glad your DH is supportive. Babies have a way of upsetting the apple basket even in the most expected of circumstances. Be easy on yourself ... <3

Sending out some hugs and positive vibes your way, CastleJJ! You and DH got this, no matter if you deliver now or in seven weeks!

All I can offer by way of comfort is to say that you are never really ready for birth and recovery and you can prepare at home like a champion and still not get things right Smile There is never enough time! My point? Don't sweat about it because you'll do as well as or better than most! Fingers crossed your results come back fine and that you can bake the baby a bit longer.

Sending all the positive vibes I can muster!

May everything go smoothly. As Winterglow said, you can never be fully prepared for child birth but it will all come naturally! Best to you!

Sending love to you !
I gave birth 3 days after the supposed DDays, but that doesn't mean i was better prepared.
Take care of you and your baby girl, and let DH do the rest

Thank you everyone for the well wishes. I went to the doctor this morning and they cannot locate the cause of my symptoms. They tested me for cholestasis and just told me to sit tight while I wait for the results. The doctor feels like it may be something environmental more so than cholestasis. So now we wait and see. So far, baby is staying put.

and perhaps just simply an allergic reaction to something and can be fixed easily. When DH and I have a baby it will be his first time around pregnancy too as he was deployed before with SD so I am glad you get to experience your firsts with the pregnancy and baby while it also being your DH's firsts too!

I had a similar rash when I was pregnant. After it was determined not to be anything scary, I started using Grandpa's pine tar soap and that got rid of the rash. It smells horrible, but it was completely worth it.
