Snowed in day 1

Cover1W's picture

Really day 1.5. it's been a crazy week too, ice, snow, school late start, early relase, cancelled. DH and I also working from home. As many of you know I truly like YSD. But I'm about done. I have been working on disengaging more so DH steps up. It's hard to do when YSD is pretty good but I am not the parent.

Apparently she had a meltdown about going to an advanced math tutor, which she needs. She's far ahead of her peers and there is no place in the school to put her. The tutor is fantastic, recommendation from a friend. We discussed with YSD over dinner the week before. Well DH says she was in tears not wanting to go. Thank goodness he didn't throw me under the bus when YSD alledged we never asked her if it was ok. I made the initial appointment, but that is as far as I go. Told DH he needs to talk with her; she complains non stop about the easy math, wants to do more advaced work so this IS the only option. And sometimes adults DO know better than the kid. We are rescheduling due to snow. I will set up first meeting again but it's on DH after.

And she is bored. Of course, I get it. But she's got her xmas gifts, almost all of them, DH and I gave her stuffed in a cardboard box shoved behind the door in her bedroom. WTF. In there are games, puzzles, books, and she refuses to get them out. She doesn't want to make cookies, or play outside. Or watch a movie. She's been sitting there like a lump for over an hour. Oh well, not my problem.

She keeps randomly saying "Hi" to get a response, or saying "boo, did I scare you!" Agh!!! I'm ignoring those now.

We're going to be stuck here for DAYS longer with two more storms coming. I would like nothing more than to bring her to a friend's house or BMs, but it ain't gonna happen.

Trying not to go crazy ...

Stop

Green Day said it best.  "If you're bored then you're boring..."

My father (now deceased) use to tell me all the time as a child and teen that if it's worth doing it's worth doing right. He believed in working to his full potential. No slacking.

Why stunt one's self on a easy math class if you're quite capable of excelling on a higher/harder math class? What's her objection to the tutor and advanced math? Does it cut into her 'free' time? Perhaps take away from something else she wants to do or is currently doing? Maybe one of her GF's is giving her a hard time about being 'brighter' .  Or just whining because she doesn't wanna (I absolutely hate when kids use the standard lazy 'I don't wanna'.  Not wanting to is not a reason, it's an excuse.

As to the I'm bored. Pfft. I use to tell my kids that they could be bored and miserable quietly if they insisted, but they did not have the right to try to make me feel miserable/bored along with them. Fine, sit in a chair and stare out the window. Just do it quietly. Drag me into the I'm bored crap , I'd find something for them to instantly do. Just as you, I supplied plenty of options of a variety of things to entertain themselves with .  Choice was theirs. They could sit and do nothing silently (whining in their head to themselves all they pleased) or find something to do much more fun than cleaning their room, mopping the kitchen floor... you get the idea.

DH and I think her problem with the tutor is just because it's something new. She and OSD always have had problems with new things/schedules. I have little patience for it. We're moving ahead with the tutor at this time, thank goodness DH is on board (so far).

Yesterday she helped me with dinner. DH had to get her back after to help him clean up but it was good to hear him be firm.

I'm a super good ignorer so that serves me well

Oh sweet Jesus I feel for you. We were all home the week before last for 2 days because of the f’ng polar vortex, (skids were home 3 days but I couldn’t take anymore and went to work) and I wanted to scream. I was ready to tell them to go play outside in -53 degree weather. Even bio parents were going crazy with their own kids, what about us cooped up with someone else’s kids??

Godspeed.

I'm 58 and can remember quite a few polar vortexes.  Swimming was often the last class of the day and because I walked home,  my hair would freeze every. single.time.   They closed my school one time during the blizzard of 77/78.

We are on the east coast so I guess the ground hog was wrong this year...more winter weather!

Ok there's a break in the weather. I mentioned to DH that if her could find someone with an all wheel drive and could get to the main road they could get out to meet BM. But after today it could be another FOUR or FIVE days. Our neighborhood is impossible with the hills.

I'm following up on this with him....

When my son started getting 'bored' - I made up a bored list of chores. If he even described something as boring he got to pick a chore from the list. I'm not as good as I should be about giving him chores, but I tell you what - that kids is NEVER bored. At least if he is, he doesn't mention it.

Way to go, Elkclan!
