So They're Handing Out Tablets To Students in Grades 9-12 In the Girhippo's School District.

I'm sure this will dramatically improve YSS's grades. So far he is failing 4 major core subjects; Global Studies, Math, Science and English. The chronic absenteeism probably isn't doing any good either.

I can only imagine what a hassle it would be to manage IT-wise all of these tablets going out!! It's bad enough managing ADULTS with their tablets and laptops never mind a bunch of kids--the majority are way UNDER their age in responsibility.

Many schools now use tablets or computers in the classroom at the least and tons give the children school issued laptops / tablets to take home.

They come to the schools already very restricted in their functions by the companies that create them. Then they give control of everything else to the teacher.

For example SO's oldest can use one in her class but the teacher has to unlock them through her computer. She then sets up what they are suppose to be doing and gets the reports to her pc.

They can be very beneficial and cost effective if used right. Many schools have gotten away from physical textbooks and now use digital software instead.

Basically if the school did it right the kids not going to be able to freely access the internet and go on Facebook during a lesson.

Our school district hands out Chromebooks to all the students. The only problem is that if a student loses the Chromebook, or the charger, the family has to pay for it. I don't know what happens if a family thinks their kid is too irresponsible to keep track of the technology - I don't think declining it is one of the options.

This is my 5th graders 3 year with a school issued iPad. You can tell the teacher it is not allowed to.leave the classroom

My son is a good student. He only uses it for school work. We have our own electronics .

I don't get parents that don't monitor or limit their kids electronics. I know I do and it is the first punishment I dole out.

OSS has one that comes home; YSS's stays at school, but he still has online assignments. It actually *really* bothers me that their assignments are online because not all kids have internet (the SSs included for a while). DH ended up purchasing the internet for the kids at BM's house because BM's credit was so bad AND she still owed on outstanding bills that they wouldn't let her get it. I HATE that he did it, but I don't know what else he could do.

Also, the replacement cost is something like $600 if one of the SSs breaks or loses it. Unless it gets broken or lost on our time, there is no way in Hades we're helping to pay to replace it.

Every.friggin.year we get a note that the skids won't be getting their final grades because they haven't returned all their school materials.

GD6 was shown hardcore porn at school by one of her 1st grade classmates, the school apologized and said the IT department is now is locking down on searches with the word "seks" in them. Duh.

One of our schools is trying this cause it's cheaper then actual books, but the tablets are setup in such a way it can only connect to internet through the school system. ALso all social media is blocked.

My own district will allow parents to request that the school-issued tablet / chromebook / laptop be kept at school instead of going home with the child.
