Fathers' pet names for their children

Gia's picture

I was just wondering what are the pet names used by daddies for their kids. I bet some will be cheesy. My husband used to call SD6 "baby", but that stopped (upon my request) more than a year ago. Now he just calls her by her name and the occasional (once every two weekends) "honey".

I don't know why, but pet names is one of my pet peeves (huh?)... LOL

DH doesn't really have a pet name for SD other than a variation of her name. He used to call her things like "sweetie" etc... but I told him he cannot keep calling his daughter and myself the same pet name because it is creepy. He doesn't have a designated pet name for me so he had to just stop with her.

BM and my DH have called SS buddy for years - was very hard when I was disciplining him and they were his buddies -

On the other hand DH calls DD - sweet pea and I don't mind that but she is only 5 and he does correct her all the time unlike SS. I don't think I would have minded the buddy so much if either of them had tried to be the bad guy every now and again.

oh, sg reminded me, mil calls sd all kinds of variations of her real name and it pisses dh off to the max. he has even said to her "mother, that's not her fucking name!" hahahahahaha i love it when he has those rare moments where he shows that backbone of his to his mil or bm!!

DH and I both call the skids variations of their names. I have a pet name for my DS too. My dad and EH both always called DS buddy and that's what he called them and they still do that a lot, but both of them spanked his hiney on numerous occasions so they weren't buddies ALL the time! LOL

LOL. My DH calls his 17 year old SON. Bo Bo. It is sick to here him go try to wake him up in the AM…” Hey BOBO, time to get up”. I guess it was cute at 2-3 but not at 17!!

This cracks me up - sounds like a pet monkey!! I would encourage that name and crack up every time I hear it!!

PET monkey... LMAO!!! that is so true... I do picture a big chimp when I say "bo-bo"... funny because I'm hispanic and BOBO means "SLOW" (as in a slow person) in spanish. hahaha

There are several that my Dad called my brothers and I when we were younger. We each had our own but I have just listed them generically here.

Boliver Sock Waddle
Pooh Bear
- the moose
- Dickey Doeey Doeey
BatMan
Cliff Claven

and several others. They all faded as we grew up but are permanently preserved in photo albums and family lore. My youngest brother's nick name is on his head stone. He passed when he was 10mos old and my parents put his pet name at the bottom of his stone. For the sake of family anonymity I have not listed his nick name.

My son (SS) has had several over the years.

Gopher Boy
Flop
Crash
Bruiser
Grody (he could not say my Brother's name when he was a toddler so my brother purposely miss pronounced his name. To this day they call each other Uncle Gruce and Grody)

Though not a childhood nick name.... I am stuck for ever as UmaDitz. My nephew could not pronounce my name when he was a toddler and Uncle ---- came out "UmaDitz". All of my brother's kids call me by that name especially when they want to wrestle or get a rise out of me.

The same nephew could not say GramMa and GramPa which cape out Deema and Deepa. All of the GrandKids adopted the mispronunciation and now my mom and dad are stuck with those names for ever.

I have no problem with Nick or Pet names for kids or anyone for that matter. Especially if they are earned or unique for that kid.

Funny how a lot of nicknames come from toddlers not being able to pronunce the names correctly. My 3 year old son had a nickname because SD didn't know how to say his name, and even after she learned how to say it, we all still called him that nickname every once in a while. Now he is the one who gave her a nickname because he can't pronunce it... Dirol

Ha! That reminded me that when my DS was little he couldn't say my sister's name so my EH told him to call her "Bubba" and he DID! For YEARS he called her that and occasionally we all still call her that. It just stuck.

SS who is almost 22 has been called Bubba since I can remember and the funny thing is that DS called his pacifier his bubba so SS was all excited thinking DS was talking to him only to find out he was really only looking for his bubba.

Hmm BM calls SS4 Buster, which always sounds a little odd to me (reminds me of Buster Bunny). Both SD8 and BF call SS Bubby. BF calls SD by a shortening of her name, or Baby Girl. Nicknames are kinda big to BF because he's ridiculously country. I don't care much either way. The kids call me by my name. I call the skids and BF sweetie, hunny, sweetheart, hunny bunny, sweetie pie, or their given names. It sounds sickly sweet, I know, but they're just the words that fall out of my mouth.

DH doesn't call SD14 much of anything other than Kiddo. Now that she's a teenager, I tried to quit that and went with Chica. DH and I call each other Sweetheart and Babe.

The dogs on the other hand... L'il Bit, (or l'il shit when she's obnoxious) Noble Hound, Dumbbutt, The Morons, Goofy, Dorky, Big Dog, Anxious Hound, (he's scared of thunder) Needy Dog. The cat is PushyCat because she jumps up in the bed and cries and cries until you pet her.

DH calls his daughter "pumpkin". He used to call me "pumpkin" too. Then I picked up on the fact that he used it on many females - friends, co-workers, nieces, etc. So I told him to find something else to call me. Now he calls me "Honey", and it slips out to his daughter too... so now she's "pumpkin" and "honey". To be honest, it's catching, because now I find myself calling my own daughter "pumpkin", which I find annoying (I annoy my own self)!

DH (and everyone else, it seems) calls his son "buddy", which I HATE.
