Relationships with former SKs after DH’s death
This topic is (hopefully) decades down the road for me, but some recent financial planning made it cross my mind.
DH and I are early middle age; he's nearly a decade older than I am. We're both healthy, but his family has some degenerative disease, while mine has none and tends to be long lived. So it's quite likely I could outlive him by several years.

They’re here, again
It's BM's day, but sure enough OSS and YSS come busting in the door. And there goes my skid-free night.
They're not being annoying or demanding: they just asked to hang out and watch the US presidential debate with us. They're in good spirits: YSS is playing with DD, OSS talked to me and DH about college prep, and they'll do homework and be out of my hair until the debate. I'm in my office getting work done, anyhow. No big deal, in theory.

Even the “ideal” step situation is draining
My SKs have been with us most of the past two weeks, due to Labor Day -- and that they generally now push the 50/50 schedule to spend maximum time at our house. DH had to be out of town part of this weekend, so they were with just me.

Disengagement for stepdog?
Along with SKs, my DH came with a German Shepherd that he’d gotten shortly after his divorce, before we started dating.

Introduction - longtime lurker
Introducing myself: I discovered StepTalk via Internet search about 5 years ago, shortly before my marriage to DH who came along with 50/50 custody of SS13, SD11, and SS9 (ages at that time): I barely knew the SKs before the wedding, had little experience with any stepfamily situations, and wanted to prepare myself for the worst - the situations described on this site opened my eyes to all possible worst-case scenarios!
