O/T- great finds

So we just bought a new house and I’ve been trying to decorate and get furniture on a budget. I think I’ve done really well!

I hit the second hand stores, the junk yards, FB market place and Kijiji on a regular basis.
My very best find was last weekend. We have a junk place here, you really have to pick through stuff but once in a while there’s a great find.

I found a Bron Coucke mandolin in perfect shape for $5! I almost died when I looked it up and it’s worth $400!!

I tried it today and it works great, DH wants to sell it. Lol.

What’s your best find in a garage sale or second hand store?

The best find was a craiglist ad for "miniature village in glass case" they had a few photos and I almost wet my pants when I saw what they had. It was a complete miniature Bavarian Village from Hummel. They only wanted $50, I contacted them and asked if they would hold it until I could get there, I had to drive 75 miles, but would be there asap.

Once I got it home, I did some research and found that just one of the figurines was worth $300, I was up half the night taking photos of each piece to sell them on e-bay. I did a 7 day auction and every piece sold, total from all the items was $4,300.

We found two first edition Vincent Price cookbooks at a thrift store for $1 each. One was signed and is worth about $650, but DH is a huge nerdy fan.

DH and I got a great deal on exercise/barn mats on craigslist. Stall mats take a real beating, and they have to be replaced regularly at $30-$50 a pop. A young airman was moving to a new base and selling a bunch of his stuff. We got mats he used in his weight room for $20 each like new. Woot!

We love going to charity and second hand shops looking for things to upcycle etc. It's a hobby but it's very difficult to find anything worth bothering with here as they want hundreds of euros (about 10% less than in Dollars) for old furniture from the 80's that was never even expensive in the first place.

It's all heavy dark wood and lumpen, not like in the UK where you can nice lighter pine pieces which look really nice painted up. We are looking for a dressing table/chest for our bedroom but it seems they never had them here. Only big things with no knee hole or stool. weird.

I once saw something that was listed on the second hand site that was new and unused. I looked up the price in the store and saw that they wanted exactly the same for it. Ok, it was unused but it is still second hand. You get no 2 year guarantee with it after all.
