"Boys will be boys."
PITA 16 trashed Loghead's car yesterday afternoon. And Loghead isn't even slightly upset!
It was one of those weird weekends around here. I got a stomach bug around 2:00 Friday afternoon, and Gibby and I came straight home. Sadly, I told my 9 year old to have cereal or make PBJ cause I couldn't even be near food or out of the bathroom! Loghead was out chaperoning an event for his school, and the skids were at their ball tournament. No one was home to help, but I did make sure Gibby got food before I passed out asleep.
I was still was sick Saturday. Loghead drove Lazy Boye 15 to his game and then had to leave town for a meeting about his side job. He told PITA to pick him up at school when the game was over. PITA and his friends were out in the garage, working on a school science project. So again, except for me and Gibby, no one was home...
Jump ahead till nearly 7pm. I see PITA walk through the kitchen, all dressed up, and then a few minutes later, the front door slams and the car drives off. I call Loghead and ask if he knows where he went. He said he left for his group Chrismtas party, and ya, he shoulda said good bye, yadda, yadda.
Skip forward to nearly midnight. Phone rings. Loghead gets up and says he has to go find PITA. Some teacher chaperoning party wanted to make sure he got home safe in storm, since he'd been asked to leave for being in a fight almost an hour before. PITA was not home, and the party was less than 5 minutes from our house, so he should have been home.
30 minutes later, they wake me up in the kitchen. Loghead is seriously talking to him, but not really mad. Telling him how he could be in trouble at school and have to sit out some ballgames for fighting. Then starts talking about the car being "trashed." Saying how they were "lucky" the car hadn't flipped and someone been killed... He tells PITA they will talk more in the morning...
When Loghead comes in, I ask if everyone is alright, and he says he doesn't want to talk, he'll tell me in the morning, go back to bed.
Basically, it boiled down to the fact that MUCH earlier in the day, when he'd gone to pick up Lazy Boye after the ball game, he was fishtaling and sliding around in the blowing snow on purpose, and the 2 skids and a friend slid the car off into a ditch. Somehow, still don't know all details, they got car out and home and never said a word to me. Then he took the same car when he left to go to the school party. Loghead says that it was even a miracle it still ran to get him down the road...
I asked a few more questions, since this is Loghead's vehicle and his transportation to and from work, and has the best gas mileage of all our vehicles, since he drives the furthest to work...
He told me not to worry about it, he'd get it put back together somehow to drive. "It was the first snow, and he's a new driver. He was showing off. Boys will be boys..."
Yea, great. Let's remember that the next time he does it and ends up dead. Or killing someone...
So on one hand, I admire Loghead's ability to keep a cool head, and not kill the child, but at the same time, there needs to be some consequence. THIS is why my skids act the way they do...

What would you have had him
What would you have had him do differently?
I forgot to mention there
I forgot to mention there have been 2 other incidences with the car lately, and just last week Loghead had to remind PITA to be extremely careful with that car since it is his work transportation...
I am a firm believer in consequences fitting the action... PITA's been saving for his own car. He should have to pay any expenses to repair the damage. He shouldn't be allowed to drive for a period of time. Make him take the school bus. Do his regular house chores without being reminded as repayment for the damage. Behave like a decent member of this household...
Again, like I said, I admire Loghead for keeping his cool. But PITA is the one who tries to rule the house, and thinks rules don't apply to him... Children need to be given lessons to learn from when they make mistakes.
Three of our five are
Three of our five are drivers. Had one of them played around like that in a vehicle, the privilege of driving would be gone indefinitely.
There are a lot of things I am very tolerant about. Playing around behind the wheel of a car is NOT one of them.
I'd have him take away the
I'd have him take away the skids driving privilege for awhile. He should have reported going in the ditch and he should have came right home after being told to leave besides he was causing trouble at school. No discipline for misbehaving only teaches skids and kids they don't have to obey rules or laws and I don't think he's responsible enough to be driving. How would you feel if this skid killed a member of your family with the reckless driving and you found out the parents basically condone this behavior?

Exactly how I would have handled it as well..however, my DH gets all sweaty palmed with his own..can't seem to enforce consequences...well..he can't...but that's another story...
Besides if he hurts someone
Besides if he hurts someone you could lose everything you have if sued. So not worth risking that to allow gutless guilty parenting of an irresponsible brat
Yeah, when this boy is
Yeah, when this boy is driving around a metal death missile that weighs thousands of pounds and is going to "goof around" with it in dangerous driving conditions, there needs to be consequences. It goes beyond the skid, he could have hurt someone out on the road. I believe you had some good ideas....but obviously the semi-firm talking he gave the kid is a joke.
I can't remember, so forgive
I can't remember, so forgive me if I'm mixing you up with someone else, but isn't this the same kid that just messed up your van not too long ago? Why is he getting all these panty passes for tearing up other people's stuff?
Besides the fact that he's messing with your transportation, he's just disrespectful of being allowed to use other people's things. That's a really bad habit to get into.
Nope, wasn't us with a van.
Nope, wasn't us with a van. Fortunately, this is is first real mess up with a vehicle...
