Dilemma

Angelinfrustration's picture

My beautiful SD is getting married. Although I cannot wait to see her in her gorgeous gown and walking down the aisle, I have a dilemma.

7 years ago and following an affair and well documented drug problem, BM walked out on her 20 year marriage and her children. It was especially difficult on her then 13yo son. He all but erased his mother from his life. SD stayed in contact with her mom, often to her own detriment. Now living with her boyfriend,  BM indulged her drug and alcohol demons with little protest. As a result, she would get drunk and high before calling her daughter and either ranting at her for choosing to live with her father or going into illicit detail about how she had slept with every one of her daughter's  boyfriends. (I assure you, this is true and we have the emails and texts to prove it.) Naturally, my SD was heartbroken.

3 years ago, I moved in and built a loving relationship with both stepchildren.  Probably for the first time in their lives, they had a mom who worked hard, put family first, and had their backs in anything positive they were doing. Within short order, they were both were calling me mom. I treated them like I do my own kids.

About a year ago, BM appeared to be sobering up and was making a concerted effort to be back in her children's lives. Although I attempted to advocate a relationship between them and their mom, my SS had no desire to have anything to do with her, sober or high. SD being a little older and wanting her mother in her life was a little more forgiving. I genuinely hoped BM had cleaned up and was sincere about making amends.

So, a year ago, SD gets engaged and we all set about planning her wedding. Although I love her, i was so honored when SD asked me to be her matron of honor. However, I'm also deeply concerned. Understandably,  she wants her mom and dad to walk her down the aisle. Equally understandable, BM is not excited to have me involved. When i hosted SD wedding shower at my home, we invited her. Prior to this, BM and I had never interacted at all. We had the shower outside next to our pool. Everyone was having a great time when BM arrived an hour late. As hostess, I walked over and introduced myself. She was cordial until she heard her daughter refer to me as mom. BM threw a tantrum and stormed out. SD was devastated.  I was devastated for her.

I want SD to have her dream wedding. Of course she wants her parents there. As much as I want to see her get married, I dont want my presence to cause her mother to do anything to upset her day. I have no doubt my being there will upset her. Seeing me as the matron of honor will only upset her more. I know how much it means to my SD to have her mom there. I'm perfectly willing to stay on the periphery so that my SD can have her mom there without her causing a scene. SD and I discussed it and shes insisting on me being her matron of honor.

Do I accept this honor knowing it will likely result in BM behaving like a spoiled toddler, or do I tell her no and keep my presence as low key as possible so that BM has as little reason as possible to make any disruption?

No matter what you do, short of falling off the face of the earth,  BM is going to pitch a fit. She has held your SD as an emotional hostage for years and now is doing the same to you. Let her be mad, you do what makes sense for your happy relationship with SD.

Angelinfrustration's picture

Indeed she has and it is excruciating to watch. At any other event, I would handle BM without concern. I just dont want to give her any leverage to make SD day about her. She does that enough already.

Survivingstephell's picture

Instead of making changes to appease an unappeasable BM, you need to come up with a plan and key people to monitor BM and remove her if and when necessary.  The bride needs to warn her mother she will be removed if she acts up. ( after telling her she is wanted there)  That is  how you handle an addict. Spell out the expectations and consequences.

BM 's behavior is hers and hers alone. If she messes up the wedding day, that has nothing to do with you.  You all know what she is. Act accordingly based on reality, not a wishfilled fantasy.

JRI's picture

Watch your back, Angel.  BM sounds like a volatile loony and must be fiercely jealous of you.

shamds's picture

She chose to behave this crazy way and use you as a scapegoat because thats what narcs do,, blame someone else as nothing is their fault. She was this crazy before you even were in tbe picture

so at the wedding when the shitstorm happens and bio mum blames you and chucks a tantrum, thats on her. Ruining her daughter’s big day was more important than making it wonderful, thats how narcs are

Felicity0224's picture

I think of SD is old enough to get married, she's old enough to consider the potential consequences of having you involved and make her own decision. You aren't responsible for how BM behaves. It would likely hurt your SDs feelings if you decline to participate. I would take the suggestion above and appoint someone to covertly supervise/manage BM as best as possible and then go about your business enjoying the day with SD.

ldvilen's picture

Oh, come on!  Are you really that much into, "Take the high road and feel sorry for yourself."

I fully get that BMs will always rule the day, even those who are (former) drug addicted hos.  However, there is no way in h- you should be anything other than your husband's wife or SO at SD's wedding, and in this case, SD elected you to be Matron of Honor too.  So, go and be your husband's wife or SO, meaning you are by his side for the day just like every other husband and partner at this event, and fulfill your role as Matron of Honor.

I really cannot believe that you feel you are somehow shaming BM and SD by, more or less, just being there, as if you are supposed to feel ashamed of being married or SO to your DH.  If you had no problem having them call you mom, then you should have no problem being your DH's wife or SO at this event, AND have no problem being your SD's Matron of Honor too.  And, by the way, it is an Honor to be Matron of Honor.

If you were going to get involved with DH and the kids to turn around and kiss BM's butt when she decides to make an appearance and act like she is the #1 woman in their life (a woman it sounds to me like they all pretty much despised way before you entered the picture), then you should have never gotten involved with any of them to begin with.

Angelinfrustration's picture

I am not trying to take the high road. I am trying to give my SD the day she deserves. I'm thrilled to be involved at any level. This day is not about me or anyone else but her and her fiance. I have no doubt her mother will not put her daughters needs ahead of her own. I will be at the wedding. However, if taking a back seat will give my SD the day she deserves, I will do that. I dont feel sorry for myself. I feel sorry for my SD.

ldvilen's picture

I don't mean to be so hard on you.  But you mentioned above how concerned you were about being Matron of Honor despite SD wanting you to be in that role.  To me this sounds like giving BM her special day vs. SD.  However, if you and your SO or husband (and his permissions matter too) are OK with SD's plans, then that is what truly matters.

However, keep in mind that even a SD or SS doesn't have the right, even for one day, a so-called "special" day, to determine who gets to act like a couple at their wedding or not.  BM and bio-dad are parents for life, yes, even tho. BM may have been and probably will continue to be a nasty narc.  BUT, they are not a couple for life.  Just like no bride or groom would ever think of seating Uncle Harry with his ex- from 10 years ago vs. his current wife, or at least not without their permissions, they shouldn't be making that assumption about their own parents as well.

Winterglow's picture

I think you are overthinking this. This is to be your SD's special day and SHE gets to decide how it goes. She is absolutely aware of what her mother's like, she has no illusions, and she still wants you to be her matron of honour. It would be a huge slap in the face for her if you decide to "take a back seat for the day". This isn't about what your SD deserves, it's about what she wants. Now, please stop thinking about meddling in her plans (because stepping back would be doing exactly that). It doesn't matter how understanding she might be on the surface about your reasoning, she might never forgive you. She gets to decide what goes on her special day, not well-meaning family. She's an adult and knows what she's doing.

lieutenant_dad's picture

Protecting kids from their parent's poor choices by offering to be a buffer (whether that be physical, emotional, or financial) rarely works. I'm not advocating for kids to get beaten by their parent, but I am advocating for letting a sinking ship sink itself.

SD will be in this toxic back-and-forth with BM for longer than she needs to be if you go in there and try to be the buffer for her. SD is an adult. She knows how her mother behaves. If you were going to have a conversation with her about this, it would be a better use of your time to talk through how SD can mitigate any meltdowns BM is likely to have. That could mean not giving her access to liquor, assigning someone as her personal bouncer, telling BM how things are going to be beforehand and letting BM make the decision if she wants to be involved, etc.

I get with kids the need to not alienate them from their parent, but this sounds like a situation where BM literally walked away from all her parenting responsibilities. She didn't visit, didn't pay CS, and didn't even talk to her kids except when she was high/drunk. She did her own damage.

Now, having said all of this, I DO think you jumped WAY too quickly into the "mom" deepend with kids who suffered the trauma of losing their mother while she's still alive. To you, it likely feels great that they call you mom and have really taken to you. BUT, that comes from a place of trauma and desperation for a mother-figure after theirs abandoned them.

Did your DH put either child in therapy after BM left? It sounds like, in addition to BM leaving, they may have been exposed to her drug use and inebriated behavior. That takes a toll on young adults, and it's likely to all boil to the surface someday in very unexpected ways.

Instead of stepping in to replace BM, your DH needs to impress upon both of his children that they need to seek some professional help to deal with that trauma. They likely have anger at him, too, for not stepping in sooner. They also need to learn that it's okay to NOT have a loving, trusting, normal relationship with BM, not because of their own anger but because she has caused that rift in them.

If you want to actually help these young adults, you do need to step back on the mothering role and shove your DH into the forefront who can handle these issues with them. Yes, they're adults and don't have to listen to him, but he needs to acknowledge his own culpability in what happened AND encourage his kids to seek professional help to work through the feelings they have. You being so accepted so quickly is enough evidence that they haven't processed what happened - they just masked it.

tog redux's picture

All alienating parents say the other parent did it to themselves.  I don't read that BM disappeared and wanted nothing to do with them, but the reverse.

As you said, they should have had SS and SD in therapy and worked towards some kind of relationship with BM - and if there is a CO, then they should have tried to follow it and encourage at least SS (who was clearly a minor, not sure about SD) to try to have a relationship with his mother. Allowing him to "erase her from his life" for any reason is not okay.

lieutenant_dad's picture

I dunno, someone who either does or claims to sleep with her daughter's boyfriends after calling her child when she's drunk/high seems to be alienating herself.

I guess I interpreted the OP as BM up and left - like she didn't want to have visitation with the kids. She'd call, but that was it. I also question whether it would be healthy for kids to have visitation with their mother if she isn't sober. Seeing your parent high as a kite is not healthy.

I understand the stance of alienation when the alienated parent is not doing anything harmful to kids. BUT, if it's true that BM was getting drunk and high, and actually abandoned the kids, that's a time when I wouldn't push for a child to be in contact with that parent until they stabilized. And I say this as someone who has some pretty vivid flashbacks of my mom losing her mind when her bipolar disorder wasn't managed and calling me drunk saying she was going to off herself (and me frantically trying to get to her to make sure she didn't do it). That kind of behavior has consequences.

But, I didn't realize until after I posted that this was the OP who wanted/did file an RO on the XSM of her kids. I had some other thoughts on that - like the XH lying to the SM and SM believing hook, line, and sinker. We see it time and again when new SOs convince SPs that their ex is Satan and caused all the issues, only to find out much, much later that the truth is their SO was equally or more culpable.

tog redux's picture

You never help a kid "erase his mother from his life", period, even if the mother can't have unsupervised contact. Now she is claiming he was in therapy to deal with this issue.

I'm not suggesting they put him in harm's way - but they also don't allow him to "erase her from his life".

lieutenant_dad's picture

I'm not seeing how they helped "erase" BM. Sometimes, BPs erase themselves. They don't get the treatment they need, and they don't put in the effort they need to be healthy parents for their kids. Unless Dad and SM were telling the 13 year old "your mom is scum", it's going to be hard to get a 13 year old to feel favorably about his sick parent - even with therapy - and want to interact with her.

I don't see this as alienation, or at least not intentional alienation on behalf of the father.

I'm curious - did you feel BSGoinOn alienated her SS from his mom? Because this is a similar story to that.

Angelinfrustration's picture

Absolutely! He put them in therapy right away. When I came along, we continued to work with their therapists. Although my post probably does make it seem like every detail was rushed, it wasnt. I didnt jump into being their mom. I just behaved as k have for the past 27 years. I took care of my family and our home. I offered support and guidance. I loved them. When they approached me about calling me mom, we had a conversation about it. I spoke with their therapists.  Their well being was our top priority. The last thing they needed was more confusion or hurt.

beebeel's picture

It's hard to find a good therapist. I'm sadly not surprised you found at least one to sign off on the mom thing. These kids are still young and a lot can change.

But you seem to have it all figured out and you're not open to hearing other points of view. So I'm not sure how this site, or even therapy, would be helpful to you.

tog redux's picture

And I'm sure this therapist never reached out to BM to get her perspective on anything, either. Unfortunately, many just go on the word of the parent who brings the child in and never even find out if all these allegations of BM's bad behavior are even true.

Angelinfrustration's picture

Actually, both therapists tried to get their BM involved. They worked with the judge involved in the custody hearing and repeatedly made attempts to work with her. Unfortunately,  her demons made that impossible for her. Upon her return, we all, therapists included, have tried to get her more involved in their therapy. None of us, thought the right thing to do was to alienate these kids from their mother. She did that herself.

Focused_onourlife's picture

I thought the SD was open to giving BM a chance? I can see how hard it may be with the SS. This is just one of those situations where you will still just step back and let your DH (bio parent) handle it so you do not become the scapegoat in the long run. Your SD and you may be close now and hopefully forever, but she wants her BM and anything you say against that may be used against you.

Angelinfrustration's picture

You people cannot handle anything but turmoil! We didnt find one therapist. They each have their own. From the moment I met my fiance, my biggest concern has been the well being of all of children. My heart aches for what they've gone through. I dont have all the answers. I dont even know all the questions. I just do my best to do right by everyone I care about. I'm sorry my heart isnt consumed with hate and anger. I'm filled with flaws and faults. I'm human. However, all I can do is my best. Sometimes I succeed and sometimes I dont. I make no apologies for wanting what's best for the people I care about. If you find that hard to believe or unrealistic, that's on you and I'm truly sorry for whatever has happened in your life that leaves you completely incapable of believing there's any good left in the hearts of the people of this world.

beebeel's picture

Lol What?

I'm not surprised that you found three or four therapists to tell traumatized and abandoned kids to call another woman they met last year mom after the first one raised them for more than a decade. Sadly, I'm not. There are a lot of damaged people in the field with poor boundaries themselves.

It has nothing to do with how big your heart is compared to us hateful cynics. Wink

Some watch reality TV to get their drama fixes. I read steptalk lol.

ldvilen's picture

Angel, again, you don't owe anyone an explanation.  Personally, I get writing off BM.  Because, I'm sure if dad was a former? pedophile, no one here would be advocating not writing off dad.  But, because it was a drug-addicted ho BM, then the response is going to be, "How dare you write off BM/ a drug-addicted HO!!"  Who would do more damage to their own children--a pedophile dad or a drug-addicted ho?  I don't know and I don't think anyone else would either.  Personally, both of these I'd think of as monsters, regardless of my SM role or not.

I say, Thank God these kids did, and thank God you came along!  Focus on your DH and your SKs.  But, watch out for yourself too.  You cannot focus on what BM is thinking or what BM will do or it will drive you nuts.  Again, you don't want to wind up being collateral damage in another family's war with itself.

Angelinfrustration's picture

I'm taking the high road for being willing to take a back seat role in my SD wedding if it means her BM can take her rightful place without confrontation.

I'm horrible for my stepchildren calling me mom even though that is not something I asked for or ever expected. I've consulted their therapists, had conversations with them about it, and in no way wanted to add to their already problematic relationship with their mother. All I've done is love them every single day. I hardly see how that makes me evil, especially when so many stepmoms are on here shouting their frustration and out right resentment of their stepchildren. I've done everything I can to encourage them to try and rebuild a relationship with their BM. I want them to have a positive and loving relationship with her. I couldn't very well say I love them if I didnt. I saw the repercussions of calling me mom. I never wanted to add to their issues. As a compromise they call me mama angel. As for those of you asking how I would feel if my kids called their former stepmother mom, I'm sure I would have felt some hurt but I also would have been grateful for them being so loved by her that they felt the need to call her that. If you read my previous post, I started out treating her as a co-parent. I wanted my kids to be okay with her. Even after what she and my ex did, I did not and still have not, 5 years later, ever spoken ill of her around my kids. I've never tried to push my feelings onto theirs for her. Furthermore, she and my ex did not try to get my son to move in with them out of concern for him nor for any other reason than to avoid paying child support. I have that admission in writing from them both! My ex never fought for custody or expressed any desire to have our kids living with him prior to her involvement. He was a great weekend dad but knew full well he was not equipped to be a full time parent and openly said so. Had anyone other than their stepmother done what they tried to do, every one of you would be behind me. Because it was their stepmother and dad doing this, my being their BM could only mean I'm being a selfish and elitist BM who just wants control and attention and overreacted when my attempts to make their stepmother an equal parent ended!

So, if I am misreading anything, please point that out. I take no pleasure in any of this. I simply love all the children involved and make a concerted effort to ensure I'm NOT putting my own wants ahead of their needs. I will never apologize for loving my stepchildren. Your belief in my intentions will never sway my actions away from always trying to do right by all of the people I love. If that means I'm taking the high road so be it. If that means you disbelieve what I'm saying oh well. I hardly see how expressing my feelings and asking any of you for advice has yet to get me anywhere positive. Quite the opposite. By sharing with you all, I've done nothing but subject myself to being a whipping post for all but a couple of you.

So, please, tell me how coming on here and opening myself up to all of this negativity is in any way supposed to make me feel superior.

tog redux's picture

What? Aren't you the one that stormed out of your kids' events every time SM showed up? You honestly think your kids didn't know how you felt about her? When you fell to the ground in despair, forcing your teen kid to care for you emotionally, that wasn't trying to make them pick sides?

IMO, you should have told your stepkids NO when they asked to call you Mom, period. You didn't need to consult anyone.

"I appreciate that you guys care about me, and I care about you. But I've only been in your life for a short time, and you have a Mom. She may be having a hard time right now, but she's still your Mom. So I would not be comfortable with you calling me that."

Done. If you didn't want it, you would have stopped it.

Focused_onourlife's picture

Which is it? Because in your OP you stated you weren't going to go to keep the peace for SD (knowing she included you) now you're going to keep the peace. Just go and don't get your panties in a twist because BM will be there and play her role as well. Just be happy you have a relationship with your SD where she wants you to play an important role in her wedding. Your exh wife couldn't interfere in your relationship with your BK's and neither can you with your DH kids and their BM, regardless.  Sheesh.. Noone is attacking you we just want you to understand you can't play both sides, you're either "respectful of the BM" or not.

Angelinfrustration's picture

Afterall, you have all been so overwhelmingly supportive of this fellow stepmother! You've done nothing but RIP me apart because I dont hate my stepchildren and dont routinely complain about how we are all miserable. God forbid one stepmother actually love her stepchildren and want to do everything she can to do right by them! Jeeze!!!! I'm truly sorry so many stepmoms have such a hard time. Many go into these relationships wanting the best. Somewhere along the line, something happens that ruins that well meaning. That, for all the love in my heart, makes me ache for you.

beebeel's picture

No one is ripping you apart for not hating your stepkids. Some of us are just wise to the behind the scenes drama-starting, pot-stirring types.

We are simply pointing out that all of this drama between the bm and you, specifically, would have never happened if you had politely left the title to their actual mom. It's great that you have been there for your sks. That doesn't erase the 10-15 years she spent raising those kids.

Nothing between you and your skids would be different if they called you Karen instead of Mom. Nothing. But you wouldn't have to worry about BM flipping her shit at SD's wedding when she hears it again, though...

MissK03's picture

I haven't read everyone else's post yet. (I'm at work) Quick question.. is it new that both parents walk their daughter down the aisle??

I have been to (no sarcasm) about 15 weddings the past 8 years. Never seen this.

tog redux's picture

My step-niece did it with her Mom and my BIL - BIL then sat with my sister the rest of the night.  I didn't think anything of it, my sister and her SD have a great relationship, and obviously all of us step-aunts/uncles/grandparents were invited.

So OP, I do know a thing or two about regular stepfamilies.

Angelinfrustration's picture

I am so grateful for you as well. I'm glad your family has such a loving family comprised of biological and step family. I have every intention of being at the wedding. I do not want to minimize the importance of having her BM there. I'm actually glad her BM is going to be there. Quite frankly, we weren't sure she would be until the shower we had here and her mother attended. For months, she was telling her daughter she didnt know if she would even go to the wedding, muchless participate in the wedding. My SD was so happy to know her mom was coming. Bm family had been invited and attended the shower here at my home. We have no issues with any of them. They saw for themselves that my only intent was in giving my SD the wedding of her dreams. I'm in no way attempting to take anything away from BM.

However we may differ, it's good to see that blended families can coexist respectfully and peacefully. Like a lot of stepmothers, I am simply trying to walk the fine line between wanting and doing what is best for the kids and not quite knowing where your place rightfully is. Thankyou for your input. I mean that. I am not on here looking for praise. I'm simply trying to make sure I am not putting what I want ahead of what my family needs. It's easy to judge when you are not in the situation. I appreciate anyone who is capable of offering their opinion without hostility.

ldvilen's picture

Yeah, I'm not going to post on this one anymore because something really fishy is going on.  For most weddings, Christian weddings, dad walks his daughter down the aisle and one of BM's other male relatives, such as a son, walks her down the aisle.  In Jewish weddings, traditionally the mom and dad, on either side of the bride, walk her down the aisle.

And, even I, with my own Wedding from Step-hell Disaster, didn't say that mom and dad couldn't walk down the aisle together.  Just that, if you are planning on doing such, get all permissions first--from dad and his wife or SO, etc.  If anyone says, No, then it is No.  Like I mentioned above, no one at a wedding, even the bride and groom themselves, gets to decide off-hand and without any permissions that someone else gets to be dad's date for the event rather than his current wife.

advice.only2's picture

How many young woman would ask a SM to be their matron of honor?!? Usually that's a role delegated to the brides best friend.  This whole post reeks of narcissistic overstepping.

sandye21's picture

"Yeah, I'm not going to post on this one anymore because something really fishy is going on."  It's really hard to bring in the old style drama of ST with the sensationalism of the present Corona Virus and politics / equality issues.  So bring in Mrs. Brady with a slight twist.

SteppedOut's picture

I'm sure you will get all the attention you think you have coming to you and so clearly enjoy.

Angelinfrustration's picture

Ok. If I come from the perspective of a BM I an overstepping, controlling, and all that's wrong with the stepparenting world. If I come from the perspective of a stepparent, I'm looking for attention, overstepping, and think I know everything.

Clearly, if I knew everything, I would not be here. Afterall, you have gone above and beyond to make me feel welcome!!!!! I guess I have to jump on the hatefilled bandwagon if I dont want to be condemned. I am not trying to make life miserable for anyone. In fact, the opposite.

I guess I will give it a couple of years and, maybe just maybe, I too will be filled with venom toward anyone who isnt just whining and pointing fingers at everyone but themselves. As for my 3 whole years of specialization in all things step, would I really be subjecting myself to all this if I had the answers?

You know, this site is a place to vent. Its also a place for stepparents who are genuinely trying to make the best of their situations. They may come here hoping for positive advice but dont have the emotional ability to withstand your bullying. You all have a chance to be a positive person for someone else who really needs it. I hope you'll at least try to help.

I'm not sorry my family isnt filled with complete discord. I'm not sorry I dont hate anyone who is happy or trying to make a difference. I get up every day doing my best to provide for and love the people around me. I dont always get it right but I NEVER purposely do it wrong.

Each and every one of you could choose to simply offer advice or not entertain anyone seeking advice if you dont agree with them. In fact, you can even tell a OP that you disagree with them and why. Instead of simply offering your opinion, you feel it necessary to go the additional step and tear down people who are simply hoping for a kind ear and guidance from someone who knows what you're going through.

I've yet to ask you to agree with me. I have yet to say I know it all. I will never think I'm perfect. I'm just trying to do right by the people I love. I guess I will wait until I'm angry at the world before I make another post. Clearly, anything less is license for all of you to tear a person apart. Wow!

tog redux's picture

We have told you why we disagree with you. Repeatedly. But you justify your actions anyway. Several us told you why we thought you shouldn't let the kids call you "mom", and you countered with saying that 4 different therapists said it was fine and so therefore, we were all wrong.  All of us who have so much more stepparenting experience than you.

Honestly, I think you are just here to stir the pot and practice your writing skills.

Angelinfrustration's picture

You're right. Obviously my efforts to stir the pot have been such a rewarding experience. I am clearly enjoying myself immensely. You found me out!

Angelinfrustration's picture

There are posts on here from stepparents who are stating how much they dread their stepchildren's visit, how impossible it is for them to bond with their stepchildren. Some have gone to severity of openly hating their stepchildren.  You all offer praise and kindness to them. However, you have a stepparent who is trying to do her best and truly wanting to do what's best and you have nothing but venom and vitriol. You call that stepparent a pot stirrer. That's messed up. Completely messed up and heart breaking.  No wonder our world is falling apart. We celebrate negativity and condemn positivity. We have evolved from being people who love thy neighbor and become a world where anyone trying to do right are only doing it because they have a nefarious agenda.

tog redux's picture

I'm so sorry we are breaking your heart. Perhaps you should consider one of the many, many sites that feel just like you do about "bonus" kids. The fact that you have stayed on the one site that does NOT talk that way is what makes me feel you are just here to stir the pot. You could find a place where lots of people validate your every move.  Why stay here and feel such sadness and despair for the state of our souls?

Angelinfrustration's picture

This site should be titled angry and bitter steptalk. If you all are so miserable, why do you stay. Why not go out and find someone who doesnt have children to torment your existence? At least the kids you resent would have a chance of having someone who actually wants them. I dont care how they behave, the children in your life didnt ask for you. If you resent them, you shouldn't be with them in the first place. If you really love their BM or BF you should love their children to.

Instead, you would rather come here and vent. You come here to find countless others who feel the way you do. You celebrate your misery and gang up on anyone who is looking to make things better and are looking for help.

So, you are all right. I'm looking for attention. I'm stirring the pot. I feel superior. My life is so boring that I patrolled the internet for a place I could go to and beat my chest by making posts that would incite people into entertaining me. Right. I can see what a manipulative person I am. Thank you for showing me the err of my ways.

I guess I should start my own site that is central to stepparents who dont yet hate the world. This site clearly is for only those who are angry and bitter and is a place where any positivity and happiness are nothing more than theatrics. My apologies. By all means, please accept my sincere apology for injecting anything remotely similar to hope!

As for my practicing my writing skills, unbelievable. I'm not sure why you say that but I dont care. I'm clearly mistaken as to the purpose of this site.

So...because I think you are a boundary stomping, drama-queen, we are all miserable and hate our stepkids?

I love my stepkids. I gave them everything I had for 14 years. I gave it all without the title of "mom" because no matter what I think if their bm, SHE is their mom. Also, I avoid uneccessary drama.

There are tons of stories of positivity and expressions of love and concern for stepkids on this site; from people who have been doing this a lot longer than you. But we don't sugar coat things here and we call a spade a spade.

Your posts just don't ring genuine in the least. They seem super insecure and needing validation that you're the best SM ever. I can relate to that, but not to your absolute refusal to see how you've brought on your own drama both with your ex and your skids' BM. And if anyone points that out, you turn instantly toxic. Yeah....I know someone just...like...that.

So....if you need pats on the back and light and love, I can direct you to at least a dozen other websites and Subreddits. You chose this place for a reason. And it smacks of trying to teach us all a lesson LOL.

Honestly, it's really hard to take you seriously. Your flowery, dramatic, catastrophizing language and behaviour makes me think that you welcome the drama in your life, like you are doing posting here. You just keep going on and on and on and on about poor me, blah, blah, blah. It's really hard to read anymore. I find myself skipping over your posts. Just thought I'd throw that out there as to why people may be responding to you negatively. What do you think?

Did everyone loose their ability to read today?   Did you miss the description of BM???  She bailed on the skids.

You have all lost sight of this fact and twisted responses to something else. IMO    Once again I tell OP, expectations and boundaries need to be spelled out to BM on what is expected of her on that day and what will happen if she acts up.  She sounds unreliable and you had better prepare for her drama.

OP your skids are lucky that their father found you.  They accepted you for the most part and its noble of you to consider how to make the day smoother for your SD.  Unfortunately, you are dealing with an addict and you can NOT treat them the same as a normal person.  You just can't.  There are step parents around here who have dealt with addicts for BM's or BDs..  It not easy to do.  Encourage your SD to stand up for her day, her future husband and life.  She will have to deal with her mother the rest of her life.  Now is a good time for her to put some limits on her mother.

I appreciate your advice. Nothing about any of this is easy. I most certainly dont want chaos in my life. As a stepparent, you know going in that you'll be expected to make concessions you would never have to make if stepchildren and biological parents were not in the picture. You are putting yourself in the line of fire. We all accept these challenges with the best of intentions. We dont set out to hurt, mislead, or replace anyone. Sometimes you can do everything right and it's still not enough or not appreciated. Then there's the fact that no matter how well you try, it doesnt guarantee that everyone else will do the same. Over time, it gets easier to throw your hands in the air and give up. BM or BF seems to take great care in doing anything they can to make your life miserable. That certainly doesnt make you feel endearing to the children caught in the cross hairs. No matter how much love and care you give, you rarely get credit for it. Most of the timely, it really is a thankless job.

I've never tried to elevate my position with my skids. Quite honestly, I've only done my best to avoid being another adult who has failed them. I've not tried to force my time and attention on them. I've told them they can talk to me about anything, including their mom. If anyone thinks it's easy to hear how one of the people they should be able to trust most has been the one who hurt them, it's not. It can take every ounce of strength you possess to listen to it and not want to offer your opinion about it. It's not easy to watch someone you care about open up to a parent that has not and is not doing anything but continually hurting them. Our God given hearts want to protect them, whether they are your children or someone elses. It may be their battle to fight but that does not mean you enjoy watching it.

I take no pride in being in this situation. I do not enjoy drama. I'm desperately trying to prevent it. I would happily give up the pressure. I get that it is hard to believe everyone doesnt have an agenda in a world that seems to be living under the opinion it's supposed to be all for me, me for none.

I suppose I'm defensive and that is why I continue to try to disspell any criticism here. I'm not sanctimonious or stirring any pots. It's not always easy to see where you are going wrong when your in any given situation. However, when you really are trying to do what's best for those you love and people misconstrue your purpose as something selfish or nefarious, you cant help but feel defensive.

All this drama is so unnecessary, it sounds like both BM and you like drama. Weren't you throwing yourself on the ground in your previous blog being all upset about your kids' SM? Demanding SM doesn't show up at kids events. I get it BM is crazy but no need to amp Up the drama. You aren't even married to a guy yet and you already tangled up in a mess and drama with BM. You were dramatic as BM fighting with SM and now you are dramatic SM. No need for that

Wedding Etiquette.  Usually I’m not a big fan of wedding etiquette, per se, since it usually seems to be used in whatever manner so as to inflict as much discomfort on dad’s wife as possible, BUT I’ve just gone through “The Everything Wedding Etiquette Book, 4th edition, by Holly Lefevre.  On the back it states, “Your essential guide to the modern wedding,” and mentions dealing with unhappy stepfamilies.  So, I had to at least glance through it, of course.

Have to say, I was at least somewhat impressed (and that’s saying a lot for me).  What impressed me the most is that when it came to stepfamilies and where people sit, she stated quite clearly to get permissions from all parties involved.  She stated this a couple of times.  So, NO, it us not automatically just whatever the bride and groom wants, so suck it up !#@$! SM.  Also, what I found interesting, is that she recommended not seating exes that closely together EVEN IF they get along.  Here are some good quotes:

“The basic principle of etiquette can be summed up simply as the idea of not offending, embarrassing or upsetting others.”  (Aside: That sure as H- wasn’t followed at my SD’s wedding!)  “You should always invite significant others of married guests, engaged couples, couples who live together, and those who are generally considered to be a couple.”

This was advice to a groom that didn’t want to invite his stepfather: “To invite your mother without her husband would be awkward, rude and offense to your mother.  If you insist on excluding your stepfather, you should discuss it first with your mother.”  Parents are not considered members of the wedding party, contrary to popular belief.  “The head table is usually reserved for the members of the wedding party.  Parents usually sit at separate tables with their families.”  “Divorced parents should not be seated at the same table, no matter how well they get along.”   More on that below. . .

This is the author’s response to the question:  Should ex-spouses or ex-in-laws be invited?  The author’s response is basically No, but what I found more interesting is what she goes on to say:  “Even if you think your relationship has evolved to a certain level and you feel okay inviting your ex, you may feel differently later or when the day comes.  Additionally, it can be confusing if you have children together and awkward for many of the guests to see your “old” wife, for instance, at an event meant to ring in the new.”  I think this plays into what there has been a lot of discussion about lately, and that is that being friendly-friendly with the ex is not a good thing, as it causes confusion for the kids and can be awkward for many others.
