New Site Activity Feed

Admin's picture

In an effort to increase engagement on the site, and to make it easier for logged in users to see when new activity occurs on the site, we've implement an initial version of our site activity feed.  You must be logged in to see the feed on the home page.  Once you login and navigate to the home page, you'll see an activity feed that shows all blog and forum posts, as well as comments.

The initial feed is pretty rudimentry at the moment but we are activley working on enhancing it.  For instance, comment entries don't currently link directly the comment, only the post the comment is on.  We'll be addressing that first.

Additionally, in the near future we'll be changing the feed to be tailored for each user.  Instead of a firehose of all activity on the site, you'll see activity tied to your Friends, Bookmarked pages, comments on your content, etc.

Let us know what you think, and any suggestions you may have to make this better for everyone.  Thanks!

Now, I get logged out multiple times a day which is something that I’m obviously not going to do.

Any suggestions? I’m using the same device with the same settings.

robin333,

Login sessions can expire in one of two ways:

  1. You close your web browser
  2. You haven't been active on the site for 10+ days

My guess is that you are closing your web browser, which is logging you out.  We implemented this policy in order to protect users privacy and site security.  In the past years we've had multiple instances where users family or others were able to interact with the site as that user because the user forgot to logout of the site when they were done browsing.  This was also happening when users used public computers to browse the site and forgot to logout.  In order to combat this we decided to implement security measures that log you out if you close your browser.

As long as you don't close your browser and are active on the site within 10 days you should not have to login again.

We'll continue to look at other options to make it easier to use the site without having to login each time, but also without reducing site security or jeopardizing members privacy.  It's a hard balance.

Personally, I am willing to go through the "pain" of having to log back in if it means that somebody's life isn't ruined by a snooper..lol.  There is lots of venting and raw emotion that could be hurtful...but would be devastating if the parties involved were to find it.  Thanks for explaining that though.  I was wondering too.

Ideally, I would like to see that on "all" the pages.. both forum and blog in addition to the home page.  Before when I could see snippets of everyhing even when in a blog post, It drew me out to other conversations.

I also actually like when we see what the comment was..or at least the start of it.. At least that's how I remembered it being.  Sometimes the way someone started to respond to something was intriguing and made me want to know who or what was being discussed.
