O/T Knowing how much everyone makes
Forums:
I am guessing it is not like this everywhere but the town I live in it is common knowledge how much most people make. Most people either military or government so it is just common knowledge. I just happened to think that the rest of the world is probably not like this. I honestly know how much just about everyone I know makes. Because of the fact that everyone's salaries are out in the open my friends and I discuss everything else financially. Is this weird or different? I can't help but think the rest of the world does not work this way. I honestly know how much most of my friends house and cars cost because we are all so open about it. What is everyone else experience with discussing finances?
I work on an AF base. I know
I work on an AF base. I know or can know how much everyone I work with makes.
See no one ever asks but
See no one ever asks but everyone says things like we got a great deal on our house it was only _____. Also, most of my friends are building homes so once again if is common knowledge how much everything cost
That is the opposite in all
That is the opposite in all of my friends and their SO jobs. You can google it and know how much they make
In all of the offices I have
In all of the offices I have worked in, it is supposed to be a "taboo" topic. But it's not too difficult to figure out an educated guess, based on tenure and position. Outside this industry, and in more corporate atmosphere's, it is actually against company policy a lot of time to share your income with co-workers. In fact even in my little office, one of the girls was reprimanded for sharing what she makes with her counter part.
I don't talk about how much I
I don't talk about how much I make, but I work for the state government. All someone has to do is go to the civil service website, type in my job title, and see my pay range.
I work for the federal
I work for the federal government. Same story here. Which is why I rarely tell people my job title - lol!!
No one knows what we make. We
No one knows what we make. We are big oil and gas here and so salaries are guessable based on the job you do, but it isn't talked about openly.
We also own a small construction company.
We both drive newer vehicles and I suppose someone could lookup the costs. We take really nice vacations and I'm quick to emphasize that we saved and worked hard for them.
However, we live way, way below our means. Not all our friends are in our tax bracket and I don't want to be treated differently because people think we can afford more.
I have a couple of friends whose lives are going to change because the price of oil is going so low. Years of living high on the hog and thinking that it would never end has created some difficult situations for them. They don't want to give up the life but aren't going to be able to sustain it much longer.
