Collections after BM2, I helped them along :-)
SO and I got a letter addressed to EXW2/BM2 (who I dislike but tolerate) that she is in collections phase 2 for a debt owed to Gold's Gym. Yea right, like that cow used her membership even once. She is insanely financially irresponsible....she racked up $30k of debt on SO's credit cards during the divorce and was shocked when she was forced to take it out of her settlement!
Anyway, the creditors wrote a letter saying it is in collections and sent it to us (she must have put his address as hers when she signed up, since she was living with her dad, and she used SO's credit card and therefore SO's billing address)
I'm a kind and helpful person, so I made sure to write the collections company a letter informing them that EX2/BM2 had recently gotten re-married and moved. I made sure to provide them with her new name and new address and implored that they contact her there. Can't wait until they really start hounding her!

I always check to see whi the item is addressed to before I open mail. I would be livid if DF opened my mail, so I do not open his. Sometimes the mailman makes mistakes. It doesn't hurt to take a quick look to make sure you didn't get your neighbor's mail.

I accidently open mail not addressed to me all the time. I just mark the envelope "Opened by Accident" tape it shut and most of the time forward it to the proper person and address.
KNOWINGLY opening someone else's mail probably is illegal, accidents happen every day.
As for that person who used your name to inform Gold's of her current address well you're not responsible for everyone else.
I'm the same. I didn't
I'm the same. I didn't notice the mail was addressed to her. I open all our mail (SO's and mine) and sort it into the bills pile, junk, to-do, my pile, etc.
I didn't notice it was hers until I opened it and saw it reference Gold's Gym, which I remembered was one of the thing EX charged on SO's credit card. I'm not a total a-hole....another time I accidentally opened something of hers. It turns out it was a bill from the Cord Blood Registry (a place that keeps the cord blood from your infant's umbilical cord in case of future illness). I wrote her a note saying I opened it by accident and it looked important and I mailed it to her. She was appreciative.
They were still legally married at the time of her spending spree, so there was nothing he could really do to stop her. He couldn't shut down the account since it was a joint account. He did keep track of his credit (every day - he is a banker). He kept a detailed spreadsheet of every dollar she spent after she left the state and took that out of her settlement.
