Toe nails question -those with bios
Forums:
Could those of you who have bios please tell me at what age is it appropriate for a child to start cutting their own toe nails? Also at what age did you have to stop reminding your bios that their nails need cutting? This might seem like a strange question but I find it weird that DH still cuts SS13 toe nails & if he doesn't tell skid they need doing then skid will walk around with claws and not bother getting it done. This is the same skid who spends loads of time in front of the mirror preening his hair! I was pretty independent from a young age so just want to check with other people on here who have their own children if this is normal for a 13 year old?
My 7 year old does her own
My 7 year old does her own and has for about a year now.
I started doing mine when I
I started doing mine when I was in the mid to high single digit age range. 7-9ish. A 13yo needs to be working on his own.
My Skid (SS-22) started doing his own when he was about 7.
So, I will go with 7.
My Ex is 47, and he still
My Ex is 47, and he still can't cut his toenails. When we were married, he would let them grow until they started breaking. The kids said he still does that. Walks around barefoot in his apartment with these long-ass gross toenails that could seriously cut someone and give them a nasty infection. He wonders why he can't get laid.
No shit!!
No shit!!

BS started cutting his around
BS started cutting his around 6. I used to have to remind him all the time..his nail grow super fast but that stopped closer to 7
My kids have been doing for
My kids have been doing for themselves since 5 or 6 I think. But I showed them how to do it, I hate feet! Even my kids feet. They run around barefoot out side and yuck! I would look and remind them of it till they were about 8.
Echo that's a very good
Echo that's a very good question.I have said to DH a few times that doesn't he think at 13 SS should be cutting his own nails?Hell if he was a girl he would quite like be starting his period now so would he be changing his pad then?!The response has always been "yes you right next time I'll tell him to do it" well still waiting for that to happen!
A few weeks ago MIL came around with nephew 8 and he had been to soccer practice so asked if he could take a shower as he was staying with MIL at ours for dinner.Well nephew went along had a shower,SCRAPED the shower glass door after he used the shower & NO ONE had to remind him to do this.DH came downstairs later and said "I went to check after nephew 8 finished in the shower and do you know he cleaned up after himself all on his own". I replied "Yes DH that's what normal kids do", SS13 has to be reminded 9 times out of 10 to scrape the door after he has been in!! Just to clarify nephew 8 is SIL son so not a blood relative of mine that I would show bias to but is generally a well behaved kid who tidied up after himself & yes his mum is a single mum!
Holy hell. My BS5 cuts his
Holy hell. My BS5 cuts his own nails. Although I do remind him, and I also inspect afterwards.
For that matter, my two year old son asks to cut his own nails. He doesn't have the fine motor control to actually work the clippers properly yet, but he wants to!
I would heave been MORTIFIED if either of my parents cut my nails when I was a teenager! You do that for babies, and at 13 I was convinced I was "practically an adult!"
My dh always cuts both SD's
My dh always cuts both SD's nails every time they come over. To me it is bizarre, they are 9 and 10, nearly 10 and 11.
This is part of what I don't
This is part of what I don't monitor any longer for my own sanity.
SD11 - likely can do it on her own but I've never seen her actually do it. I got her a manicure set for her birthday a couple months ago.
SD9 - I do this for her IF it's an ok time/place to do so. The last two times she practiced it on her own. Her problem is getting the coordination, but suspect she'll be doing it on her own soon.
No, BM doesn't ever do this. I was horrified the first time I saw their nails/toenails and immediately instituted "manicure/pedicure" times at home a couple months after I met them.
It isn't really an age thing.
It isn't really an age thing. My son has been a pain about it because he just didn't have the fine motor skills for so long, and when he would try to cut them, he would cut too far and end up with painful spots. He probably started cutting his own full time at 12. He will be 14 soon and I'm finally to the point of not having to remind him to cut fingernails or toenails, or if I do, instead of arguing, he agrees and I don't have to harp him.
