OT: Cricket phone service- or similar

We currently have Verizon. BS and my mom both have basic cell phones. The contract on their phones expire in May. BS is asking to be upgraded to a Smart phone and I think my mom would benefit from a Smart phone.

Anyways, I don't want to pay Verizon prices for either of them to have Smart phones. I have thought about going through Cricket for their phones.

Can anyone tell me what they like/don't like about Cricket?

Or do you know of any plans that are similar to Cricket?

We looked at cricket but went with sprint. We paid about 70 to activate two smart phones but aren't paying for the phones. We get unlimited everything plus 10g hotspot for both phones. This means I can pink my tablet when I'm out and I don't have to have a different phone line. The deal they were doing is that after two phones you could get up to 3 more at no extra cost. 5 lines at 90 a month for the first year. After that each line was another 30 but the phone was still free if you keep it activated for two years. If not you pay the difference. Past the two phones you don't pay any extra for the activation.

The phone is a Samsung se3 I think. It's not the latest and greatest but I'm finding no issues or difference between it and the s5 I had before. It was a limited time plan offer but it's worth looking at.

I switched to Republic Wireless from AT&T in January and love it.
Zero problems, $30 flat (plus tax) per month for 2 GB. I have no need for more and reception is better overall than with AT&T. Plus the phone was affordable.

Consumer Cellular? I was going to go with Ting, but then my cousin recommended Consumer Cellular. I'm still serviced by AT&T (didn't even have to change my phone #), and I got a smart phone for me and a grandma phone for Grandma, and my bill is about $50 a month. (Much less than when both Grandmom and I had grandma phones!) I have unlimited texting and the smallest data plan (Wifi at home and work).

This is great information. I'm not very tech savvy, but it's obvious that AT&T has us in their clutches. Both DH and I still owe hundreds on our current phones, and will need to pay them off before we can switch. Sad

ZERO - I'm stunt how it works.... this is how I see it, correct me when I'm wrong..

You can only buy a phone at the service company you want to be at? If you buy another phone it's with another company?

on Mars we only have one provider, either you buy your phone with them on contract (they give cheap phones with signing of contract) or you buy your own phone at any shop and simply put the micro card in the phone.... still with same provider.
