I have a public sector job. I did a few stints of employment in my early 20's is the private sector and found that benefits such as time off, raises etc SUCKED! I've been in my state's retirement system now for 17 years... so that means 13 more to go and I can retire with full benefits at 58.. so while I don't love my job (also don't hate it.. just kind of blah about it) I'm pretty much stuck here.

Does your company provide good benefits? Yes

Do you get medical, dental, 401k, etc. Yes, however the dental isn't anything spectacular, but it's better than nothing Wink

How much paid time off do you get- holiday, sick, time, etc. 15 paid holidays, 5 weeks paid vacation, 3 personal days, all snow days and 13 sick days a year that can accumulate, and according to our current contract when we retire, we can get paid $75.00 for every unused sick day. I currently have 100 and that's even AFTER taking 3 months maternity leave when BS6 was born.

Do you get bonuses? How are they determined? No bonuses in the public sector Sad But we do get annual raises according to our union contract the past 3 years we actually got 6% which was HUGE for us.

Company parties? Company outings? We have a Christmas party and an end of school year party every year but they are nothing fancy.

Paid maternity leave? Have to use sick days

What else? We do have really good health insurance. No Copays for Dr. Visits or prescriptions and I have never had them tell me something is not covered. The only thing we have to pay out of pocket is a 50.00 co pay for ER visits. Also my supervisor and even the Superintendent are VERY lax as far as taking time. Like if you need to run out to a Dr. appt. or come in a little late for some reason it's no biggie. I actually finagle my hours so that I can drop BS6 off at his school on my way into work, so I come in later, but just don't take breaks and take a shortened lunch.

Is it easy to move up in your company? Not really any place to move

How important are these benefits and mobility? Benefits are HUGE to me, mobility I don't care about so much.

Anything you would change? Demographics. I really like pretty much every one that I work with employee wise. It's the people I work for (students/parents) that make the job sucky because I work in City School District that is mostly poor, a lot of drugs and gang nonsense and the nature of my position is that I pretty much ONLY deal with the "bad" kids so that doesn't help. Sad I would really love to transfer to another district.. especially the district that BS6 attends as they are a lot smaller, more rural.. BUT I'm pretty sure the pay would be much less and I don't want to go back to being low man on the totem pole.. not at my age.

Does your company provide good benefits?

YES

Do you get medical, dental, 401k, etc.

Yes- premiums are decent, we can earn MRA funds to be used towards deductibles, co pays, also have a medical center in my office, free flu shots.

401k is matched after so many years, and usually every year we get a gift of a 401k contribution.

How much paid time off do you get- holiday, sick, time, etc.

4 weeks vacation, 3 personal days, week sick time and carry over from previous years, paid holidays

Do you get bonuses? How are they determined?

Yes- merit

Company parties? Company outings?

Yes- this is somewhat new.

Paid maternity leave?

16 weeks paid. Then you can bring your baby to the back-up daycare for your first 4 weeks after you return to work.

What else?

Flex time, work from home, med center on site, back-up daycare on site

Is it easy to move up in your company?

Depends on department.

How important are these benefits and mobility?

VERY! I love the benefits that is why I have stayed so long.

Anything you would change?

No!

Salems Lot's picture

This doesn't apply to me.
I work for myself at the moment, so the only benefits I have are:
I create my own hours.
I work from home and come and go as I please.
Accept commissions I want to do, turn down the ones I don't want to do or can't do.
All profits are mine. Blum 3

Down side:
No medical or dental but I am covered under SO's.
Sometimes, it's too busy before the holiday's and I have to turn down work, too slow after the holidays and have no income.
I am responsible for all supplies, equipment and their maintenance, repair or replacement costs. Sad
If I make a mistake, there is no one else to blame but myself....Unless I can lame my cat! }:)

CBCharlotte's picture

Does your company provide good benefits? They are pretty good. I work for a large insurance company.

Do you get medical, dental, 401k, etc. Yes, as well as adoption benefit, 2 IVF treatments, home warranty options, life insurance, etc. There are a bunch of added perks to choose from (sometimes included free, sometimes at a cost). There are three medical plans (PPO, EMO, and CDHP) and 3 dentals plans (Gold PPO, Silver PPO, and DMO). I think there are 2 or 3 levels of vision plan as well. 401K - company automatically puts in 3%, even if you put in nothing, and they match you up to 6%. So I am basically getting 15% of my income each year put aside towards retirement. I think I actually put in 8% though so it is more.

How much paid time off do you get- holiday, sick, time, etc. I get 15 days PTO vacation days, plus there are a bunch of PTO holidays (9) and the day before the holidays are early closings at 1pm if it is a week day. I'm not sure the total sick time but I think it is a week. I've never actually taken it; if I'm sick I just work from home or if I can't work my boss just says to take off. It isn't really formally checked. Once you are here 5 years the PTO days increases and continues to increase as you are here longer. You can also carry over 10 unused PTO days to the following year.

Do you get bonuses? How are they determined? We have a "target" bonus. mine is $18K. You are given a % of that bonus at the end of the year, based on company performance and your personal performance, and the % can be greater than 100%. I would guess I will get 100% and possibly greater this year.

Company parties? Company outings? We had a company picnic at one of the execs house. There are also department outings - my boss takes us out from time to time, people are always bringing in snacks. There is a "morale committee" which does fun things, like bring in coffee for the office on national coffee day, bagles on national bagel day, halloween costume contest with prizes etc. all at no cost to us

Paid maternity leave? We get 8 weeks of paid maternity (or paternity) leave and I think you can go on disability or FMLA after that.

What else? If you are in certain roles, they will give you a car to use (I don't have one). However, we have to "pool cars" that you can sign up to use for free if you have a business trip. I also have a corporate card for work related expenses

Is it easy to move up in your company? Yes, I think so. The insurance industry has a huge talent gap....1/3 of the industry is retiring in the next 5 years

How important are these benefits and mobility?

Anything you would change? The maternity leave sucks. I wish I lived in Europe. Insurance is expensive, compared to Universal Health Care. I will spend $10,000 on insurance and care at least this year for me and skids

i'll answer first then go back and read the others -

******

Does your company provide good benefits? - no benefits

Do you get medical, dental, 401k, etc. - no benefits

How much paid time off do you get- holiday, sick, time, etc. - 15 days a year, PTO. we also get 7 or 8 paid holidays a year

Do you get bonuses? How are they determined? - Christmas bonus

Company parties? Company outings? - we have had mini-parties here at the office. but then again, there's only 6 of us here full time!

Paid maternity leave? i have no idea. no employee has gotten pregnant in over 14 years.

What else? - nada. small company.

Is it easy to move up in your company? - i've moved up as far as possible, cant go any higher unless i buy out the owner, which i wouldnt do.

How important are these benefits and mobility? - stability is more important to me. i have insurance through dh's employer, but even before we met when i was uninsured, i'd go next door to the walk-in clinic for 70.00. BUT with the ACA i have no idea what i'd do. stability means security to me, which is more important in my little world than mobility.

Anything you would change? - i'd change my rate of pay!!!

robin333's picture

Does your company provide good benefits? Yes, currently using DH as more affordable.

Do you get medical, dental, 401k, etc. Yes, using DH'S for medical and dental. 401k is excellent with fully vested at 2 years. Also, have stock options.

How much paid time off do you get- holiday, sick, time, etc. Honestly, I'm not sure of totals. It's based on length of service. It's plenty but I rarely use it. Love the holidays!

Do you get bonuses? How are they determined? Only merit.

Company parties? Company outings? We have conferences which are nice.

Paid maternity leave? Yes, short term. I only know because of a colleague.

What else? Flexible work at home, freedom of thought and respect of management.

Is it easy to move up in your company? Possible but not easy.

How important are these benefits and mobility? Very.

Anything you would change? Better IT. Better utilization of talent.

StepX2's picture

Does your company provide good benefits?
Very much so!
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Do you get medical, dental, 401k, etc.
Full medical, dental & vision. Co-pay at the doctor's office is $10. Prescription co-pay just went up to $10. Our dental plan gives us up to $2300 per patient a year and then pays for 30% of anything over that. Vision will pay up to $350 every year for glasses.
Our retirement is matched $100 percent with what the employee contributes.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
How much paid time off do you get- holiday, sick, time, etc.

My employer has an extremely generous leave policy.

16 Holidays:
New Year's Day, MLK Day, "President's Days (Monday & Tuesday of 3rd week in February), Good Friday (Friday before Easter), Memorial Day, Fourth of July, Labor Day, Veteran's Day, Thanksgiving Day as well as the Friday after Thanksgiving, Christmas Day through January 1st every year (this year it is 6 days and we're off with pay from 12/26/16 to 01/01/17).

12 sick days and 4 personal days a year and these can be carried over to the next year.
I currently have over 1000 hours of built up sick leave. Unlike our vacation hours, we don't get paid for any unused sick leave but it can be counted as days towards your retirement.
For employees who have long term illness, we have what is called a "Catastrophic Sick Leave Bank". As long as you have donated during the enrollment period, you may put in a request to use this if needed.
We also have a half pay for employees who have exhausted all of their leave time. They're given half of their salary up to 3 months.

Vacation
New employees have 10 days a year.
After 7 years an employee will have 20 days a year.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Do you get bonuses? How are they determined?
No set bonuses...nothing at Christmas like I hear about other companies doing...but they will out of the blue give everyone a bonus unexpectedly. The last one was back in June and before that it was a little over 2 years prior. We had about a 5 year period where we didn't get anything before that.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Company parties? Company outings?
There are parties at every chance. Different departments will host what ever event they want and just announce it weeks in advance. Last month was our Halloween costume party, today there's a Thanksgiving potluck. We'll have a formal Christmas party on Dec. 10 and then have a during the workday Christmas party on the 21st.
Outings?
Not necessarily but we do tend to find a conference in Vegas or Tahoe that several of us will sign up for and then we'll have a large group there. Smile
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Paid maternity leave?
Yes, 12 weeks.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
What else?
Longevity Pay - We get an added amount in our check each month depending on how long we have worked here.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Is it easy to move up in your company?
Yes and no. I'm not where I want to be and I know I'm an excellent worker. It can depend on who you've pissed off sometimes.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
How important are these benefits and mobility?
Benefits were a lot more important when my kids were younger.
I'm at the point right now where I'm looking elsewhere after more than 25 years here. Dh has benefits that I could be covered under but I've always taken care of my own. I know I still could when and if I leave here.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Anything you would change?
I see others complaining about their company being behind the times with their technology. Ours is and always will be as current as possible.
I enjoy working here but there can also be too much technology if you know what I mean.
I also hate how some people can influence so much just because they're buddies with the person who should be making decisions objectively.

StepX2's picture

I forgot to add...$100,000 life insurance with the option to purchase additional policies from $25,000 to $250,000. I have an additional $150,000 for $17.81 a month.

secondplace's picture

Does your company provide good benefits? Yes, pretty good actually.

Do you get medical, dental, 401k, etc. Our medical and dental is 100% paid. I contribute $10.00 per week and anything over and above the cost of filling a prescription that the company doesn't cover. I also have a year's salary worth of life insurance. We also have chiropractic, massage therapy, acupuncture etc.

How much paid time off do you get- holiday, sick, time, etc. I have four weeks vacation. I am on salary, so I get paid if I'm sick. There is no official maximum, but if you take too much time, it will be noticed. We have approx. 10 stat holidays per year.

Do you get bonuses? How are they determined? Yes, if the company if doing well, they will pay everyone an extra week's pay from time to time.

Company parties? Company outings? Usually a Christmas party every year. BBQs in the summer - approximately once a month. Pizza lunches.

Paid maternity leave? 52 weeks - paid by the government. A percentage of your salary, somewhere around 57% up to a maximum specified amount.

What else? Education benefit. You pass an approved course and you get 100% of the cost back.

Is it easy to move up in your company? Not really - our company is a small/medium sized manufacturing company.

How important are these benefits and mobility? Benefits, since I'm in my mid fifties, are extremely important. I find I'm using them way more than when I was in my twenties and thirties.

Anything you would change? It would be nice to have a pension. It would also be nice not to have a "boy's club".

tonieye11's picture

Does your company provide good benefits?

Do you get medical, dental, 401k, etc.
Yes, all.

How much paid time off do you get- holiday, sick, time, etc.
Unlimited sick days but if more than 3 days in a row we get shunted to STD.
3 weeks vacation
paid shut down from Christmas to New Years
10 paid holidays

Do you get bonuses? How are they determined?
Yes. Depends on your position, your performance and how the company does.
For example I get an 8% bonus for my position, I did average so I got my full bonus but since the company did well my bonus increased to 12%. If I was better than expected my bonus could increase as well but unless my performance sucked I will never be below 8%.

Company parties? Company outings?
Both

Paid maternity leave?
Kinda crappy at this company. 6 paid weeks but up to a year off unpaid if female. 1 paid week for father. Previous company was better.

What else?

Is it easy to move up in your company?
I see a path forward.

How important are these benefits and mobility?
VERY!!!

Anything you would change?
The maternity leave does suck. And the cost of parking sucks too.

Lit'l Bit's picture

Does your company provide good benefits?
Yes

Do you get medical, dental, 401k, etc.
Yes and options to buy stock; fully vested at 5 years.

How much paid time off do you get- holiday, sick, time, etc.
3 weeks vaca after 5 years. PTO earned 1/2 day per paid period, 10 paid holidays per year

Do you get bonuses? How are they determined? Yes and merit raises annually.

Company parties? Company outings?

Summer picnic sometimes at a local park but most the time at and amusement park Disneyland, Universal etc. Loads of raffle prizes. Xmas party at a ritzy hotel loads of raffle prizes; many luncheon throughout the year. recently Diwali an Indian celebration. Yesterday was our Thanksgiving luncheon. All catered. A few times during the year we will have an In and Out/Habit truck come serve lunch or a catered BBQ lunch.

Paid maternity leave? yes, 12 weeks. Short term and long term disability on top of state disability.

What else? Annual flu shots, Fitness programs, Monthly birthday cookies or cupcakes. Our dept goes to lunch and to a movie every Dec.

Is it easy to move up in your company? Yes if you put in the work.

How important are these benefits and mobility? very important best place I have ever worked.

Anything you would change? Nope.

I work for a non-profit medical research institution.

Does your company provide good benefits?
* Overall yes. Because our pay scale is, right now, below market rate so to compensate we have good benefits. A couple years ago they proposed changing/cutting back our vacation/sick leave program and we screamed bloody murder about it - i.e. if you do that you better give us all raises because that would have been effectively a pay cut.

Do you get medical, dental, 401k, etc.
* Yes. All of that. We get good medical plan options with fairly low deductibles. The institution covers a good portion of the premium costs too. It's a medical facility so it would be disingenuous for them not to. And also, below market pay rates.

How much paid time off do you get- holiday, sick, time, etc.
* It changes each year a little bit. Vacation starts with two weeks for new employees to a max of 44 days (they roll over and keep adding till that number is hit).
Sick leave is a maximum of 25 days total (they roll over and keep adding till that number is hit).
Plus 1-2 personal days per year.
10-11 holiday days per year.

Do you get bonuses? How are they determined?
* No.

Company parties? Company outings?
* Very few. They were essentially cut out during George W's term and the last recession and have never returned. And if we get a party, the institution/department may pay for a small portion of it and the rest is potluck.

Paid maternity leave?
* Yes. Two months. Not enough (and I don't even have kids).
There is an on-campus daycare which is pretty amazing.

What else?
* We have three on-campus cafeterias which serve fresh food and healthy options. It's less expensive than the pricey restaurants around us so that's nice. There's a coffee bar in each building. We have excellent bike/walk commuter facilities (bike cages/lockups, locker rooms, showers/towel service) in each building. The lunch rooms in each building typically occupy the areas with the best views (i.e. the execs don't get the premium views).

Is it easy to move up in your company?
* Sort of. Many, many people have been here 10+ years so moving up can be slow. Our office is undergoing a restructure due to this "problem." I finally got a promotion after 3 years (my first one took 4 years because there was no where to move me to). This is now more flexible. It's pretty easy to move from division/department too, if one is well liked.

How important are these benefits and mobility?
* VERY

Anything you would change?
* More ability for those in my department to work off-site. We are heavily admin and used to be tied to paper files. Now that those are going electronic, there are weeks I never enter the file room and deal with everything via computer. So there's sometimes no reason for me to physically be in the office. But it gets me away from the house esp. when SDs are with us on vacation. Like now. Wink

TheAccidentalSM's picture

Living in the UK we have different benefits to most of North America.

My company has ok benefits but they aren't considered terrific.

I get medical cover but I've never used it because I've managed to get anything I need through the National Health Service. Its considered a taxable benefit here so having it pushes up my tax bill. The package is fairly basic and doesn't cover everything but again that ok because health care is free at source. I don't have dental.

The equivalent of 401k is pretty good. I put in 8% and the company puts in 10% plus I can put my bonus in tax free.

I get share options but they are currently worthless due to the company share price.

We get great holidays. 8 holidays, 25 vacation days. In addition I'm entitled to 20 weeks paid sick leave. I never really take sick days but its nice as a buffer in case something happens. You can also get a certain number of family emergency days.

I am entitled to a bonus. Its based on company performance. Max is 30% but it comes in somewhere just over 20% normally.

We don't have company parties. Each person has a small allowance to go out at Christmas with their team. It doesn't go very far. Its about the equivalent of 2 glasses of ok wine.

The UK has rules around maternity and paternity leave. My employer offers the statutory minimum. This is much more than people in the USA but its considered bad in this job market.

One thing that I am entitled to which is potentially good is that I have to be given 3 months notice if I'm being made redundant. I also have a choice between a car allowance and a company car. I took the cash as my city has great public transport.

There are opportunities to move and be promoted but there is a very thick glass ceiling. I'm one of 15 females in the top 100 employees. It hasn't improved since I joined.

If I could change anything it would be my boss. He is a complete donkey butt. Most of his peers and direct reports "wouldn't p*ss on him if he was on fire" }:)
