What's everyone doing this summer?

zerostepdrama's picture

It's almost officially and unofficially summer time. So what is everyone doing? What is everyone's kid/skids doing for the summer? Anything fun?

I think our summer break is only 10 weeks. I swear when I was a kid it was a full 3 months. And of course because we are so busy trying to fit everything in... the time goes by so fast.

The free stuff is always good though. BS and I make a point of trying to do something free each weekend. I will give him his options for that weekend and he will pick something and we will do it. We live in a big city, so it allows us to get out and about into the different suburbs/neighborhoods.

Thing1 is doing a finance internship, Thing2 is studying for and taking the MCAT, DD25 is training for a half marathon.

BabyVoice will be staying in her room, complaining about everything that she comes into contact with and then whining that DH is "mean." karate Kid will be teaching some classes at the studio and, hopefully, growing up and not trying to sit on DH's lap.

ASS will be on the other side of the state doing nothing that I care about.

I will be in NYC at the end of July and Washington, DC in early August.

I love Washington DC. I go there for work (not anymore though as I will be taking a new position in a week that will no longer require me to go there). I want to go there though on an actual vacation. I never get to see everything for as long as I want to when I am there.

As a former history teacher, DC is just about my favorite place in the world! I am going for work, BUT will have evenings free AND we are having an event at The Newseum - so this history girl is on full nerd!

DH is talking about coming with me...

In all seriousness how many careers have you had? I swear I've thought you have mentioned like 5 different careers... I could be mistaking you with someone else though.

On a side note... what is your favorite period of history? I love to read about WWII. Well not really "Love" as in what happened but the history and all of the factors that lead up to the war and the events of the war.

WalkOnBy's picture

I have had a lot of careers - I was a teacher (2 years), then a flight attendant (11 years), then a paralegal (14 years) and now I work in the court system. It's not that many, considering I am 50 - lol!!

My favorite era is from about 1931-1947. The build up of Nazism, the Axis powers, the shameful way in which the President responded he first learned about the death camps, our entry into the war, London air raids, Hiroshima/Nagasaki the rebuilding of Germany and Japan - some of the most influential and pivotal moments of time.

My main area of study was military history. I am fascinated by it Smile

zerostepdrama's picture

ah okay not as much as I thought... I thought one time you had said you were a journalist but I'm probably thinking of someone else.

BS is going to overnight wrestling camp and a YMCA camp. He'll also be spending more time at his dad's. He also goes to a day camp at my work. He will be pretty busy this summer.

DH and I will be going to a big amusement park for his work outing. We also have an inner tube trip planned with a big group of friends. We are also going to a big 2 day country concert that we go to every year.

I'll be going to an island for my niece's 21st birthday- girls only trip. That should be fun! Not sure that I can hang though. Ha Ha.

When BS isn't at his dad's- we try to hit up all the local pools. I'll like to fit a camping trip in but not sure if we will have time.

zerostepdrama's picture

Ha Ha- a camp with great food.. I've never heard of that. But that's good!

Best new restaurant in the country last year (as named by several travel groups and magazines) was Shaya - an Israeli restaurant in New Orleans. It's FABULOUS!

GARDENING! That and Awesomeson's wedding this July. . .

Aniki-Moderator's picture

We bought a canoe and also go boating with friends (their boat). I'm hoping for a lot of water time in that new canoe (withOUT the skids).

zerostepdrama's picture

That sounds like fun. I am hoping to do more stuff in the water. That is why I planned the inner tube trip. I feel bad for not taking BS as I know he will enjoy it. But it's going to be a hoot all of us in inner tubes and of course we will have a floating cooler full of drinks.

Aniki-Moderator's picture

Zero, that canoe is only big enough for 2 people and a cooler (IMHO). Which means there is NO room for one single skid. And we can only use my vehicle - DH's is too small. So no way in Hades can DH take PrincASS and PigPen because there is NO way I'll let him use MY car for that. }:) }:) }:) Evil Aniki has spoken.

*sigh* nothing different than what i normally do.

lurch is about to get his license, so dh wont have to haul him around to play AnnoyingSport with his friends. so every day for them will be like our weekends normally are. and i'll be at work m-f.

zerostepdrama's picture

Nothing? Awwww you have to plan something... what about the drive in? Dinners outside? Bon fires?

Tuff Noogies's picture

oh there will be bonfires i'm sure. dh's leg is almost healed up from the last kaos-involved bonfire.

we grill out or use the smoker quite often. nothing different there either. maybe just maybe we can get some stuff done to the house like we've been planning but have been financially unable to do.

but i'm sure i'll do a lot of kaos-avoidance, and dh will do alot of resting (he is just so medically effed up, the dr swears they're gonna name some new disease after him) or supervising of home projects.

zerostepdrama's picture

Hope your DH gets better.

There is just something about summer... even if you don't do anything "fun". Better weather, longer days....A break from the day to day routine (sports/school for the kids)

Tuff Noogies's picture

SA - i wouldnt see why it's a bad idea. unless you guys are in a habit of making giant bonfires, a firepit with a 2 foot flame shouldnt present a danger. but that's just my opinion, as i think you and your dh are responsible and safety-conscious plenty enough to keep things under control.

WalkOnBy's picture

When DH got custody of the skids, we had to sell my house and find something bigger. We ended up renting this beautiful house on a great big lot. Gardens, hot tub, and waaaay in the back of the property, a pergola and firepit.

The woman who owned the house was quite the gardener, and so she was growing grapes on the pergola. She taught me how to care for them. On the night that I had Thing1 and Thing2's graduation party, a bunch of kids went to the back and had a bonfire.

Yep - dumb kids, 10 foot high flames and a strong wind = burnt grape leaves and some grapes. The kids doused the fire before a lot of damage could be done, and thankfully, the pergola survived unscathed.

I am guessing you and your DH are waaaaaaaaaaaay more responsible than a bunch of 17 and 18 years olds Smile

Another good reason for gas is that it's not all smokey. We switched from wood burning to gas fire pits because I hated everything smelling like a camp fire. Smile

Same old here. Planning a few quick trips and campus visits.

DD will be 16 just before school starts. She's lined up volunteering for the entire summer so she will be busy Smile

My oldest is going to Washington DC for safety patrol as soon as school gets out. we do a lot of free stuff too! We do a lot of inner tubing in the rivers and springs here and we are an hour and a half from the beaches. I want to go to Savannah, GA. I've never been. In a few weeks, my ex has his weekend with my older three and I have no plans so I was thinking of just driving there with the baby and visiting some museums and touristy spots. Just me and DD20months in her stroller.

Jlbfinch's picture

A whole lot of swimming at the pool and I also have a couple of week long trips planned to go visit family. I don't work Summer's but we also won't be using daycare so I'll be with the kids (mine and younger SS) all summer long.

I'm taking DD away for a two-night vacation in a small town where my friend (and DH's cousin) lives. DH can't come as he is (OMG STILL.....) working on finishing his executive master's. He's been working on that thing since just before DD was born, we talked about it and I had to really swallow my dream of moving back to Canada in the near future since his work offered to pay... as long as he stayed employed there for several more years. And he's delayed finishing it a year already. I realize I digress, but it sucks to be an older mom in a new country with chronic illnesses and a DH who wants you to take care of the kid out of the house evening and weekends so he can work on something he really cares about... and that you support until you are so exhausted you lose your mind - about once per week.

I am really struggling with fatigue again, so I hesitate to make any more plans. Sigh.

I think we have SDs for the first part of vacation, in June to early July (two weeks?). We always have them for the 4th since BM wants them Memorial Day (yay this weekend!).

Then they will be with BM for almost a month, traveling with her family and then to summer camp. We'll have them back in mid-August till school starts.

We have no trips planned at all, SDs have had several trips this spring.
Plus we are getting married in early Sept. (no doubts!) and we're getting together with family for a small ceremony and we need all the cash we can save up until then.

I'll be working on getting the back yard cleaned up and hire someone to take down the old basketball pole and create a nice seating/lounge area, and hopefully build a fire pit too!

Zero and WOB and anyone else interested in WWII stuff you HAVE to go to the WWII Museum in New Orleans. It's part of the Smithsonian and is just wonderful. I haven't been in a couple of years - but they keep adding whole new buildings. It now covers multiple blocks and has a great restaurant and bar featuring a modern take on food that was popular during the war.

One of my favorite books is Citizens of London: the Americans who stood with Britain in it's Darkest, Finest Hour by Lynne Olson. Great read. She's written some other books all tying into that era. These are non-fiction and the reviews say they are brilliantly researched.

I"m going to Greece with mom (SM) and most of women in the family. It still in the air I may go to Japan, who lives their.

Last In Line's picture

I'm planning to feed the trolls a bit here...

Aside from that, we are going to do our big family vacation during Christmas break this year instead of during the summer. We did get season passes to an amusement park that's a little over an hour away. SS has band camp. SD...afaik has no plans. DD is working on a research project. DS has a calendar full of things he is doing, so I think he will be spending his summer driving all over the place.

I'll probably get hate mail for this but I am going to the Republican Convention in Cleveland.
