Whatever happened to teaching your children to respect rules, adults and authority?

I mean, seriously, am I too old for my age, but is this right? And the mother is proud of teaching her daughter to stand up for things she doesn't think is right? So that means you don't have to follow rules you think are not right? I personally don't like speed limits. I think I'll take a stand and go 90 everywhere.

Am I alone?

I personally didn't think the dress was too short. However when I was in high school the length rule was it must go 2 inches below your finger tips with arms and hands straight down at your sides. Rules are rules and if teacher or staff member questioned it they would call you out and make you put your arms down right there in the middle of the hallway and if it wasn't long enough you had to go change or go home. Plain and simple. I went to a small school and rules were followed.

OMG, DH and I had this argument a few years back when SS15 was about 10. DH wanted to take him hunting and let him shoot the gun even though the state laws say you can't until the kid is 13 (or SOME age that was NOT 10) DH was like "I'm taking him to private land, and the owner said it was fine, and I've been taking him hunting with me since he was 4, he knows how to shoot and the laws are dumb, SS will be fine blah blah blah"

I asked him who he thought he was (DH was a COP no less!) to determine exactly what laws were "stupid" and which ones weren't? And also, just what did he think he was teaching his kid by talking like this and doing things like this. We debated back and forth, I used the "speeding" analogy too, but DH is stubborn, so I let it drop. the next day, he actually admitted that I was right and that what he was planning on doing was wrong and not what he wanted to teach his son. He still took SS hunting, just didn't let him shoot the gun like he wanted.. which was FINE with me, no laws broken there.

Rules are rules, laws are laws. If you give an inch in this day and age people will take a mile. Why is it so difficult to just freaking admit you are WRONG???

*Sigh* As much as I agree with dress codes (I went to a private school), I see very little point in trying to force children, especially teens, with dress codes. Even with very arbitrary dress codes, like the one we have here in the offices where I work, people are going to willfully break them to express their individuality; like the guy in our marketing department who wears a Scottish kilt now and then (I swear to Gawd, I want to punch this guy. I don't think he's even Scottish!). But even if I was to dissagree with a dress code, I hate people challenging authority for the sake of challenging authority even more. Dress codes are there for a reason. Had I been the girl and took the issue to my parents, my parents would have said “Pfft! Forget about it. It’s your last day! After HS you can wear that dress wherever you want!”

I don't think the dress was too short. I find I'm much more disgusted by the booty shorts. Call me old fashioned but I'm really sick of seeing butt cheeks especially with the high waisted shorts. They look hideous. We need a new fashion in CA immediately. The dress doesnt look trashy or slutty at all. Unless the famous rolling trick was pulled at school then unrolled when home....like what? This dress isn't short Idk why I was sent home. My SD15 pulls this crap all the time.

I think the mom just wanted attention herself, and to say, I can fit in the same dress as daughter!

I think it is out of style to respect teachers and authority, until things get crazy because you didn't. My Sd blames every teacher for her grades when everyone else got it, so why not her

To me parents that encourage rebelling every time like it is the 1960s, make it hard for their kids to accept a boss, the police, and that can backfire big time. Sad
