O/T No Raise For YOU!

thinkthrice's picture

So it had been five months that I had asked my boss for a raise since now I am the county's 911 server and software administrator (emphasis on software) and support for the Sheriff dept as well (hardware and software) for the last year.

Nope!

I am probably making $4K less a year than the starting wage of this position.   I have about one year and 3 months until retirement.   Unlike Retired Dude who was making almost 100K (because he had a different job title and had been here for at least 30 yrs) I have been documenting EVERYTHING for the system in the event that I will give last minute notice just before retirement (which now I intend to do).

I also will go to the software company's lavish convention the end of Sept 2020 (usually at a nice southern location; this year it was Key West) and then take off in March 2021.     Sad thing is they base your pension on your final wages.

Adios!  Going the extra mile doesn't get you anywhere or so it seems.

P.S. I don't DARE tell Chef this as he already thinks I do too much for my job anyway and is always telling me that they don't care and to slack off like everyone else.

There are a lot of factors driving down salaries in the tech field.  Yes, recent college grads do well, especially if in R&D, but more administrative people are watching their salaries driven down.

Sometimes the only option is to move to another  company. Not sure if you want to do that right now, but as soon as you tell them you're leaving for a better salary I bet you'll be offered a rise.

Sorry to hear TT. I felt that way at my last job. I liked  the job and  felt appreciated until i got a promotion for little pay and lot more work, i worked with different people and my boss that promoted me left and i hated  my new boss. I struggled fo one year and retired at 45....dh actually told me to quit and  come live happily ever after with him. My kids were graduating from college so here I am lol in step hell

but my job pays for the mortgage, utilities, taxes, groceries, insurance, basically all the living expenses.   Although Chef's business does make money, it is more of a tax write off against my income.  Margin of profit is not there due to price of job materials.  Chef is also not good with organizing his tools so he tends to just buy another one instead of using the stuff he already has.  It covers his child support and earns a little profit and enough to pay a subcontractor.

That stinks. Sorry about that.

I was not selected for a job within the last 6 months. My experience was 1000% exactly what they needed and the owner that I phone interviewed with was SUPER excited. This position would have inceased my salary by 35% and provided better benefits.

My in person interview was going GREAT; however, one of the other owners asked me if I had children! I said yes and tried to move on. He further pressed for the ages. When he found out I had a toddler, he asked me how that would affect my ability to to my job! (Side note: there was absolutely zero anticipated OT or travel required for the position.) I was absolutely shocked.

I am not one to beat the female card, but I seriously doubt a man would be asked questions like that. When I was not offered the position, I could not help but think the only reason I did not get it was I have a toddler.

It totally sucks when you KNOW you are being treated unfairly for no (good) reason.

they did hire a female sys admin to cover that base.   She is a very good worker and has a great skill set.  But yep,  my give-a-damn is busted so I will not be going all out as I once did.

I know they are not supposed to ask that, which is why I was so shocked. But, in the end, what would it have changed?

If I was in your shoes and about to retire - as crappy as they're treating you? I'd be hard pressed to document everything for them. Eff 'em. Bunch of douches.
