From lunch plans to hearbreak.

I was about to leave for lunch with my former #2 who recently reached out to reconned after he resigned from our former company.  I texted him to let him know I was leaving for the Greek place he selected.

He replied a few minutes later that he would have to ask for a rain check on lunch.  He had just received the call that his dad passed.

He and I were in a 1:1 ~2yrs ago when he got the call that his dad had just been Dx'd with stage 4 cancer and only had about 4mo to live.  I had a hand on his shoulder as he sobbed on that call.

Today, he lost his dad.

My heart breaks for him but am happy that they had two years that they did not expect to have when his dad got the Dx.

I hope that this does not cause him a setback in his sobriety, managens his anxiety, and his career. Is is a rare talent but has way too much baggage that threatens his quality of life.

And Rags, I'll bet that ~ hand on his shoulder ~ meant more to your former #2 than you can imagine. When we're grieving, any and all kindnesses affect us deeply. I'm also confident that you will follow-up with the fellow when the time is right!

That's tough. I can't even imagine being in that position.

Sounds like you provided the support that he probably needed.

It's good you are there for him. It sounds like he barely keeps it together on a good day. He will need support.
