Is your lawyer good or bad? Your Legal Experiences...
We've all been exposed to the justice system either ourselves or through our BF's & husbands. What has your experience been? Do you trust how your lawyer handles things? There's a few of us dealing with lawyers right now..so I'm curious....
The reason I ask is, my BF's 1st lawyer was HORRIBLE. We gave him eveidence he didn't present. There was paperwork my BF should've filed, he didn't tell us. He sold him up the river..I believe he was incompetent..I can't beleive he still practices law!! We were so naive, we just followed along...BIG MISTAKE!! We got a 2nd lawyer, very prominent, high profile...very good, highly regarded..but we had to undo the damage the first guy did. Uphill battle but we did it, eventually.
As good as he was...if we had taken his advice to not try to vary spousal support back in 2002..we might still be paying today. We knew our case soooooo well...We came to understand family law & case law..sooooooo well....We knew our evidence....I even studied the judges. I knew that this judge..doesn't tend to believe in spousal support..or that judge beleives in unqual division...from the hours I spent studying this stuff.
My experiences has taught me that even a good lawyer is only as good as the case he has....we have to do the leg work for them... No one has more invested into winning a legal case then you....
I'm not a lawyer but because of how much I've learned & how successful we were.. alot of my friends come to me to help them prepare background for their cases or even to learn what questions they need to ask thier lawyer... I hate seeing people played!!!!!
For those that are in this now .....I wish you all the best....and I'm routing for you!!!!!

Neither my husband nor I
Neither my husband nor I like his lawyer. When we first went to see her she was VERY arrogant and I truly believe that it was a race thing (we are African-American)…she even made some “shady” statements about a conversation she had with a colleague that a certain building downtown had a lot of “baby-momma-drama” and then proceeded to explain the term to me (it is a slang term used primarily in the African-American community) which I didn’t at all appreciate b/c I don’t speak in “dialects” or slang when I’m handling professional business…it felt as if she thought she was “coming down to my level”...so that PISSED ME OFF right from the start and her attitude toward my husband at first was that he was a no account trying to get out of paying child support…when he would present evidence to her or tell her certain things she’d actually wave her hand and say “well, whatever…”. I know when my husband is frustrated and I could tell that he was getting really ticked off with her…at first I was quite and let him handle it but I got FED UP with her drawing false conclusions about my husband b/c her perception was an insult to who TRULY is, both as a husband and as a father….so that is when I stepped in and set her straight, not with slang but with the $1,000 words that I learned in Graduate School….well once she saw that I was educated…(and so is my husband) her entire perception changed and the meeting ended with her saying “I completely think we are on the same page on this, I’ve disagreed with nothing you’ve said.” GO FRICKING FIGURE!!...take the time to LISTEN!!! So the short of it (too late for that… *smile*) Neither of us like her but she serves a purpose b/c we felt that in playing the “game”…he needed to have a female attorney. She is VERY experienced with child custody issues and knows the judge we will be appearing before and has reasonable rates….I completely agree that we have to do the leg work and “show them the light” regarding the specifics of our case…b/c they do it every day they think everything is standard but every case is different!
yes yes yes
My husband just taken back for a modification and i feel if he did not have a lawyer things would of been worse. She got caught in so many lies while on the stand- she was question if there was any reason why she could not work a full time job- which there isn't. so in the end we did okay.
I guess it depends on the lawyer the one we have we checked around and talked to people who had him and people who went up against him.
We always make a list of questions that we want to ask him and he is so nice about it. He charged us 1200. do do the modification but we had 5 office visits plus the paper work he had to file and the court date itself. Hope he does the same in the next couple of weeks we are taking her back for contempt my stepson is supposed to be in counseling and she quite taking him, did not tell my husband and now the kids are lying about it. The best part is she has no idea my husband knows. we will see.
Take care.
