OT - Black Cohosh for hot flashes
Since you've all been so helpful, I'm hoping this is helpful to you.
I whined at my doctor about hot flashes. They were gone and reappeared stronger than ever after a horrible week-long migraine. Also now very "traditional" where they come on if I get upset, exercise, drink alcohol, eat chocolate, etc. And hotter than ever (but unfortunately didn't come with burning off any fat).
She suggested I try black cohosh. I don't like to take lots of meds, prescribed or holisitic/natural. But I was desperate. HOLY COW DID IT WORK! I still have a hot flash here and there but they are not as hot, shorter in duration, and less frequent.

Just goes to show, different
Just goes to show, different alternative remedies work for different folks. Black cohosh didn't work for me, but I got some relief from soya isoflavones taken twice a day. Not cheap, but took the edge off hot flushes. I would never take HRT.
It is amazing how different things affect people
I appreciate the recent “personalized medicine” push but I don’t think they will really be able to make it per individual. Sure you can check someone’s DNA for markers, but there is so much more going on that affects how a person reacts to medicines. Diet, weight, attitude, pain threshold, where they live(d), pets, environment, medical history, etc.
It is a bit worrisome that it’s that much of a crap shoot.
