I know that dealing with autistic kids can sometimes be hard...step life is difficult enough without the added stress of autism. I wrote this page http://www.squidoo.com/autism-autismo which has won a Purple Star (a great honor for unique and out of the box thinking) about our journey with autism...I hope that it helps some smoms here deal with the kiddos...they truly are wonderful kids with very delicate hearts.

My intent is to bring acceptance for those with autism and peace to those around them. I hope you find peace.

What a beautiful post! What an awesome journey you have taken. As a therapist who works with many kids with neurodevelopmental challenges, I agree with so many of your strategies, especially the quiet room and bedtime sequences. Good for all of you!! How wonderful. And how wonderful that you could share it. Thank you so much.

In therapy we sum it up as "the brainstem doesn't fall far from the tree" - - - there is usually an obvious link up to one or both parents in terms of sensory processing issues, ASD, PDD etc. - very clearly explained in embryological genetic processing. Remember that there was no diagnosis or acknowledgment (never mind treatment) of these issues for the parental generation. So everyone compensates along, with varying success, and that's why working with the whole family is so important.
