OT: Who are our Low Carb Steppers?

Flying.Purple.Step.Monster's picture

I'm gearing up to take a crack at Low Carb/High Fat. I'm one of those people that can't eat just a little of the 'wrong foods'. So I was thinking of just cutting out almost all carbs and seeing if what 'they' say is true about the cravings go away.

I know there are a couple people out there that are doing this and I was hoping for some support and motivation Smile

Forgot to mention that if someone wants to send me a private message instead of posting here that's great too!

The first step is admitting you have a problem.

The second step is grilling it in butter and layering it with bacon.

I'm thinking about it. I got a job a couple of weeks ago (working in fine jewelry), and I want to be thinner so I can buy stuff straight off the damn rack. Tired of trying things on.
I have been drinking a lot more water, and usually when I get home DH has cooked breaded chicken or pizza or tacos while I munch on lettuce and maters. Sometimes DH will have cooked steak, pork or chicken on our Foreman grill, so I add that to my salad.
My boss is also on a no carb diet. She has some health concerns, and her doctor recommended it for her. I didn't know about the gallbladder connection....I will have to watch that one since my mom has had gallbladder problems for years.

I just started a diet this week with co-workers. We're competing to see who can lose the most weight in 10 weeks. I'm not doing low carb because I'm a diabetic and on insulin (for 34 years now). I decided to cut out Diet Coke and instead just have one coffee in the morning at work for caffeine. I drink 100-120 ounces of water each day. I have found I am less hungry when my meals are 20-30 carbs, rather than 50+ like they used to be. Plus all of that snacking in between that I used to do. I could barely finish a salad and a Lean Cuisine meal today, while the rest of the office had pizza delivered. I have been filling up FAST!

I think cutting out the soda has helped, and I do strength training at night. I'm about 5'5" and a size 14. I hope to lose 15 pounds, but 25 would be ideal.

Good luck to you, but be careful with going too low on carbs. It made me light-headed and I thought it was low blood sugar. My BSL was at 140 and I was loopy because of lack of carbs. Be careful!

I don't necessarily low carb. I'm more of a picky carb.

I avoid refined carbs whenever possible and stick to sprouted grain breads and whole grains and brown rice.

I'm not much of a carb person in general, and prefer lean meats and veggies.

I'm not a fruit person, as I don't care for sweet food.

Don't get me started on the amount of dark chocolate I can down in an hour. Damn you Brookside Dark Chocolate Covered Blueberries and Acai!

I did low carb and lost about 36 pounds. I have a HUGE problem with portion control. I LOVE eating, and I enjoy the feeling of being full.

I looked amazing and felt even better. That said, I could not maintain it. When I lost enough weight and I just wanted to maintain, I was told to start adding small amounts of carbs back in. But then the cravings came back, and in force. I couldn't take it!!!!

I ballooned back up 50 pounds, and ended up heavier than when I started.

Now I'm considering LapBand or a gastric sleeve. I'm easily 60 pounds overweight, but diets fail me. I eat really healthy. Lots of fresh veggies, limited carbs, and nothing processed. I just eat TOO MUCH.

Have you ever heard of the book..."FIT FOR LIFE". You do not need to buy the book. It is simple. You eat fruit for breakfast. For lunch and dinner, do not mix your carbs and proteins together.

Many times, I have heard that overweight people skip breakfast. I am guilty.

I think the key is...more water, reduce sugar. more fruits and veggies, balance of bad carbs/good carbs and good fats and bad fats.

I have been one of those people that can go forever without eating. Later, I over eat.

I do not believe in the word diet. It is more about balance...eating small meals and snacks between meals.

Last but least, exercise and exercise.

I have gain my weight back for the second time. I am tired and no happen. I said I never would do. I think the mistake I make in gaining the weight back. I let the old habits come back and denial.

Eating before bed it also bad. When I was trying to lose weight, I would go to bed hungry. If I was super hungry, I would eat some oatmeal or a slice of cheese.

Good Luck. Keep me posted.

I don't know if low-carb is the way to go versus just weeding out the processed carbs: white flour, sugar (in all its forms), white rice.. I read that sugar and white flour are considered ANTI-nutrients meaning that your body has to ADD certain things to these to get your system to digest them. That's why the USA is considered the most overfed but undernourished country in the world.

dju remember "Tone Up Tuesdays" on STalk? Yeh that was me, lol! Wink I started the weekly blog as I wanted to lose weight for my wedding.

I lost 50lbs in 6months. (I looked awesome at wedding btw, lol) The last 3months of that, I did NO carbs, but had no idea what I was doing, I really didn't do any research properly! I just quite literally cut out carbs, DUH.

Anyway after a few days of no carbs I got real dizzy, and after posting here I learnt from our very wise STalkers that I was going through carb withdrawal!

Like I said I really didn't do my research properly before I started, and had no idea I had to up my fat intake (oil/ butter etc) very silly of me, it sounds like you know more what you're doing lol!

But after I got past that weird carb crash (dizziness only lasted an hour or two, one afternoon) I then adjusted my diet to higher fat, it was awesome, my skin was better,  I had more energy, all good Smile I lost 5lbs the first week but tbh I think that was mainly water retention from eating carbs.. I carried on with no carbs for 3months and it was great..

Anyway, I'm now struggling with my weight again (a year later, I have put all the weight back on, sigh) as soon as the wedding was over, I started eating carbs again and I put on 10lbs in ONE WEEK right after wedding :O

..some people might be able to maintain a no/lo carb diet for their whole lives. Not me. No way, lol! It just wasn't manageable for me personally, when I was no carb, it took so much effort to think ahead when I took DD out for the day, I'd have to make sure I had a tupperware container with chicken and some salad with me, also if we were going out to eat or whatever.. I had to give DH a lot of pasta/potatoes off my plate those few months!

BUT, if you want to chat about going no carbs, PM me! Despite my having put weight back on, I have experience with a no carb diet now, and will be able to advise if you need, lol! Biggrin good luck! x

Evil3 and I were just talking about this. Evil suggested we start it again on STalk when I was talking about PPP's diet and fun exercise things for her and I to do.

really? you were talking about Tone Up Tuesdays? what dju think, shall I start it up again? I'm really struggling with motivation this time, with no wedding date to kick me in gear with a deadline :/ ..hmm.

sunny_skies's picture

Ahaha Sally Wink ..motivation: anniversary lol!

Ok well if people are up for it, I could start up Tone Up Tuesdays again..

As I said, I've stupidly put all the weight back on again :/ so really need to get motivated!

Ok Purple, get ready for a diet buddy! It's on! Biggrin

Hee hee,

According to my doctor:

Alcohol is to carbs as jumping off a bridge is to jumping off a bench.

I had some success with the South Beach diet. It's basically a No carb/no sugar diet for two weeks (three if your crazy) and then you slowly start introducing the "good" carbs and sugars into your diet later on.

IMO, you have to find a balance between your carb/sugar intake and what kind of physical activity you do.

I"m doing a 1100 calorie a day diet; a bit hard to stick to and of course Chef has been sabotaging it since he's gone back on his "moderation in alcohol" routine. I'm using a phone app called lose it. Afraid of what a few pounds will do to my joints as I approach old age.

He lost a few pounds and now has upped his boozing for the summer again. Ha ha! Wait until he finds it is HARDER and HARDER to take weight off as you get older. His ego would not allow for that realization.

I did a no carb/low carb diet a few weeks before we went to Vegas a couple of years back. The pounds just DROPPED off. I was a crazed, raving bitch the first week. I would have killed a puppy for a slice of pizza.
I gained almost 10 pounds back in the 4 days we were in Vegas.

Now, I try to make my carbs healthy and eliminate as much white flour/white sugar as I can. I love veggies so eating healthy hasn't been the biggest issue for me.

Also, since it's warmer out now, I'm getting more exercise, walking the dog every day and doing my Zumba class twice a week.

I've been drinking WAAAAAY too much, like everyday. I noticed the first week when I started cutting back that I was much less bloated.

I hope between cutting back on drinking and exercising more, I will be able to lose 10-20 pounds this year. We will see.
