How many pairs of jeans does a 17 year-old girl need???? !!!!!!

During a recent contraband sweep of SD17's room, I decided to count the number of pairs of jeans she has in her closet, just for giggles. DW is a "friend" parent who spoils SD17 with lots of clothes, toys, etc. I knew that SD17 had a lot of jeans, but I was stunned when I counted out 19 FREAKING PAIRS!!!! Who needs 19 pairs of jeans?????

No wonder DW is always griping about "being broke!" UGGHHHHHH!!!!!!

...you'd... be surprised. (As a girl who recently got out of the teen phase--I have close to 30. All shades of blue, gray, and black, with different striped, styles, cuts--boot, skinny, huntington, hipsters etc.)

Don't even ask about the amount of make-up and/or underwear.

Give her a monthly allowance, and nothing more than that. It will teach her how to budget. If she wants to blow all her money on clothes, she can, but then she'd do well to take the leftovers for lunch because she's not getting any more for the month.

That's how my parents taught me. Go two days without lunch and you learn the value of food > clothes.

Outrageous! I have had 3 pairs in the last 4 years!!! lol...These girls are out of control and mostly through their crazy and high maintenance moms...

Sounds normal to me.

DS and SS (both 20) have tons of clothes~~ jeans, sneakers, boots,coats,jackets....

My girls always have a lot of jeans. I don't know how it ends up that way, but they each have about 14 pair. They are 8 and 10 years old, and they wear the same size, so really that have close to 30 pair they can wear. I am lame like that. BUT, I never spend more than $15 per pair.

You are joking, right? The answer is - as many pairs as a guilty parent will buy her!!!! Try an experiment. Put a small slip of paper in them if they are folded in her drawer or hang them up in a specific way if they are in her closet. At the end of one month, see how many are "disturbed." Suggest that, since she has not worn them, perhaps they would be appropriate for donation to someone less fortunate. If she (or your SO/FH/DH) would not respond positively to your "spying" - as it would be termed in my house! - then at least you have the satisfaction of knowing and can maybe spirit out a few pairs to the local Goodwill without her even noticing!

I actually do the Goodwill thing. I've probably disposed of 300-400 pounds of SD17's clothes that way over the last couple of years. Of course, the items are never missed.

It seems overboard, but do all of them fit? Sad to say, I probably have 10 pairs of jeans in my closet that I hope some day fit in again and I hate to get rid of them.

And that's better than the alternative. At least she cares about her appearance and isn't an utter embarrassment. My SD15 has a few pairs of ratty jeans she always wears. She looks like a homeless kid most of the time when she has a guilty daddy who spends good money on CS.
