Oh BM. I Spoke Too Soon About SS and His Grand College Plans.
So - DH did NOT go on a college visit Sunday-Monday with SS.
Turns out, when he asked a few more questions of BM: 1.) SS did NOT have a tour set up - they just read on the website that the college gives general tours every Monday at 9 am and figured he could join in. On the same webpage, it ALSO says that they recommend scheduling a tour 2 weeks in advance to secure a spot. 2.) SS did NOT have anything set up with the program/department he's interested in - they called the Head of the Department and left a VM...probably because it was late Friday and no one was in.
So in the course of this conversation, it comes out that BM and SS have actually set nothing up at all. BM says to DH: "Can't you just call people on your drive down and get everything set up? And, while you're there, drop by the Financial Aid office and Admissions...he can take the admissions test right there while you wait..."
I just don't know what kind of world BM lives in. DH said NO...I'm not driving 4 hours (8 hours round-trip) just hoping that someone from the department will be in that day and that they'll have space on the tour. We'll set stuff up this week and go next week. BM said she doesn't want the kid to "lose momentum" and told DH: "Well, if you aren't willing to do it then I will."
Fortunately, DH was able to talk her out of that and he and SS have put together a resume/portfolio this week, gotten him on the tour, set up an interview with the department, and filled out the FAFSA. You know...all the stuff that NORMAL people do by phone and online BEFORE committing to an 8-hour road trip. DH and SS will go this weekend through Monday instead.
I just really, really don't understand what kind of strange, chaotic, manic world BM lives in.

That's the kind of world the
That's the kind of world the BM I deal with lives in. Sadly, she usually makes it happen by bullying anyway. Although, I highly doubt you could bully the FAFSA. Haha.
I'm guessing this is her
I'm guessing this is her first run through with college. I went to a small school so the adviser had time to meet with us all a few times starting as juniors. She kind of walked us through each step. It's because of her I got my 3rd scholarship. Considering my parents were pretty much broke I wouldn't have been able to do it without the help. Also I was the first in my family so we had no idea what we were doint. Again she stepped in and told us how.
I mean I did all the actually leg work and phone calls but she'd give us updates like most students start taking the ACT at the start of 11th grade, by the end of 11 and start of senior you should already have narrowed down the choice, call for a tour early senior year, applied and filled out for scholarships before the cut off in winter.
I don't know if this is her situation but yeah alot of people can be clueless.
I would understand this if
I would understand this if this wasn't how she handled every aspect of her life...
This is a special 2-year
This is a special 2-year program...the only one like it in the state...and there is a specific admissions test. It's a tech school, so there's no ACT/SAT requirement. Still. To just expect DH to drive 8 hours round-trip on the off chance that people can meet with SS and administer the test when you arrive...just dumb, dumb, dumb. Stupid, panic move. I think she's excited to see any motivation at all from SS and isn't thinking straight.
BM went to college and got an MA and now teaches...and she's still totally clueless about anything that requires planning or paperwork. I really don't get it. She's so daft.
All her kids (and they are HER kids, no matter what we try) are totally mediocre.
