totally O/T - i need hairstyle ideas

Tuff Noogies's picture

the forum post about appearances gave me the urge to make myself feel pretty today. i actually just put makeup on, which i rarely do (maybe once every week or two). i also want to let my hair down - 98% of the time, it's in a bun. the other 2% of the time it's in a ponytail, braid, or let loose with the front/top pulled back.

hubby has always told me he'd love it if i wore my hair down more often Smile Smile Smile BUT - i dont know what to do with it!!!! so i need some help from you guys.

so here's what i've got to work with. it's waist length and wavy (it used to be curly when shoulder/bra-strap length, but obviously the with it so long now it's pulled it into waves). it has the texture of cotton candy (YES, seriously. it's fuzzy.) it can get very big/fluffy on it's own, but i really dont have a whole lot of hair - when it's in a ponytail, the diameter of the tied part is about the size of a nickle; when i braid it, the widest part of the braid is maybe an inch.

so i really dont know what to do with it other than what i've already described. do any of you lovely ladies have any ideas that are not too elaborate?

lol no money for that! it's tough financially to get my roots done, i havent done them in six months.

it takes well to being straightened with a regular straightening iron. i can usually go about 4 days before washing it again, using just a bit of dry shampoo. as a matter of fact, i just found my iron the other day, it's been packed in a box from when we moved - over two years ago.....

I'd suggest getting a sample of the smooth infusion -- I use it because my hair is very thick, coarse, wavy (it's in a chin-length bob right now) but I still have to flat iron.

My stylist (Aveda salon) turned me on to this stuff... but she made the comment that this smooth infusion does not work will with her long/fine/wavy hair, as it weighs it down too much and gives her "helmet head" (I'm thinking she means it takes all of the body out of her hair).

I notice I have to use it sparingly also even with all my hair (p.s. when my hair was longer, I could BARELY wrap a ponytail holder around it twice my pony tail was so thick -- larger than a half dollar)

If you want a big change get it cut short so that wearing it down isn't a hassle. I got mine done last spring and love not having to do much with it (I am lazy and also have curly/waves hair so can get away with it looking slightly messy) but still being able to wear it down. I got mine cut to a couple of inches below my chin so I can still tie it back if I need to.

I was just thinking about my hair today! I am still happy with my latest cut (5 weeks ago) which is unusual for me. My hair is really thick and just wavy enough to be fuzzy if I don't blow it dry with a round brush. But I digress.

Do you want to cut any off? Or do you want easy ways to make nice hairstyles? Are there specific things you want/need?

In my case, I like a bit of volume at the crown and I don't like my hair too short or parted too far on one side.

Anyway, this lovely lady has a youtube channel (and a great accent) and she does a lot of great hairstyles without a lot of fuss. https://youtu.be/PmBhtezEpmo

She even shows you how to make your braid look HUGE! (I sound like a man....)

If your hair is really flighty you could try putting some oil in it (olive oil, baby oil...whatever you have around) leave it in for a good 30 mins to an hour then wash it out, you might need two washes to get it all out. It will help rehydrate your hair and give it some more weight so it is leass poofy. I try to do mine once a month or so.

My hair is about to my mid-back/just past my shoulders length wise with long layers and texture wise sounds a lot like yours. I can blow it out and straighten it or I can let it air dry with mousse and curl spray and wear it in soft curls. I love the length right now, because it's not a huge hassle to wear it down, but I can also do pony tail, bun, etc.

I really think good hair product is important. I love the TIGI/Bed Head line.. I use Resurrection Shampoo and Conditioner, Dumb Blond for smoothing, After Party for pre-blow out smoothing and Foxy Curls for when I wear it curly. I also use the Chi Heat protect spray and Marc Anthony Stirtcly Curls mousse for curly days as it makes soft curls...I HATE scrunchy hair! I try to only wash my hair 2 times a week max and on the days that I know I am going to use shampoo, I put coconut oil in my hair the night before. SIL is my hairdresser and she can't believe what a difference the coconut oil and less washing made as far as hair damage/breakage.

i'll definitely get some coconut oil, i love that idea.

h3ll, i've used baby oil, olive oil, queen helene's cholesterol, even freaking hand lotion at work, all when i was trying to fight against the texture. it's very healthy now since i quit doing that and have been using wen. i love their deep conditioning mask. i'm all for trying anything natural to keep it healthy. i havent had a trim in over a year and still have yet to see the first sign of a split end!

AJanie's picture

Get a trim and buy some coconut oil from the drugstore. (I like the spray so you can spritz it on your ends). After you get rid of the dead ends and add moisture to keep the frizz under control, it will probably look and feel great.

Once in awhile, straighten it with a flat iron for a different look.

Tuff Noogies's picture

hmmm. there will be no cutting it. i've had hair so short they used clippers on the back/sides. i went for years and years with it shoulder-length. i've done bangs and no bangs. i fought with the texture forEVer before finally embracing it the way it is.

it's very rare that i heat-style. my blowdryer was also in the box the flat-iron was in... it is extraordinarily healthy as the only 'damage' i inflict is bleach. i use wen as a leave-in conditioner, have been for over a year and a half.

i guess the best comparison to what it looks like is a waist-length Galadriel hair from LOTR, only i dont do a middle part.

just looking for ideas other than a braid or pulling the top/front up in a clip (which is exactly how i have it right now).

What about a top knot? Or half up half down top knot. That is my new favorite style. Youtube has tutorials and there are lots of examples on pinterest.

pinterest you say? i'll have to look into it. there's a girl at the office who is a pinterest fanatic, maybe she can use her account to look around for me.

Tuff Noogies's picture

got it - idk if i could pull that off at the office (professional, court-related field, plus i'm pushin' 40!!!), but i'd try that at home for sure.

Well, damn work. I missed your photo and the appearance blog. I'm sure you are gorgeous Tuff.

Tuff Noogies's picture

lol well thank you darlin'. the post that inspired me to "pretty up" today on the right, about resembling the bm.

Tuff Noogies's picture

oooo! i love the second one, not too time-consuming either!

i've had the long bangs, the side-swept bangs, and the thick bangs. no bangs right now, but now that i've found my blow-dryer and flat-iron i may go back to the thick bangs again, kinda like this - http://weheartit.com/entry/79958214

24 years as a SM's picture

I have long hair, mid thigh length, I use coconut oil once a week, wrapped in a moist hot towel for 1/2 hour. I usually wear my hair in a single loose french braid. If it starts bugging me on my back, I just pin it into a bun on the back of my head and have a braided bun.

Your right, it can be time consuming. I get lazy and leave it in the braid for a couple of days, I use a silk scarf at night, to keep it from getting frizzy. Usually the second day I wrap it into a bun. I have always had long hair, I have found that using a hairbrush does more damage than using a comb.

I keep a comb in the shower, when I use hair conditioner, I comb all the tangles out then rinse, carefully wrap into a towel. My sister's hair is longer than mine, she uses Prell shampoo once a month, it strips all the residue from hair products, then she does the hot coconut oil treatment for an hour. I swear she doesn't have one split-end, her hair is so healthy.

I'm of the opinion that when your hair is long and curly, you need layers to prevent poofiness. And some type of product to keep the curl in but the frizz out. I use Deva Curl products.

John Frieda products include some Frizz Ease and Straightener. Not too $$ and work very well. My hair is very fine and flyaway.

My hair is just a wee bit too short for a lot of hairstyles, but I do something 'special' every day for DD3. Here are the youtube channels I like for that (the old ones from Cute Girls, the current ones are BS, most of the rest are not perfect, but full of ideas and have good basic videos for learning a specific skill/technique:

Cute Girls Hairstyles
Braidsandstyles12
Princess Hairstyles
Babes in Hairland
ChikasChic

I think Braidsandstyles12 is most likely to have appropriate styles for you. She does hers all DIY (not on someone else), she's got fairly long hair, and most of her styles are definitely wearable. She also covers basic techniques (3- and 4-strand braids including French and Dutch styles, twists, etc etc)

Hey girl...... you do not touch that hair... I will kill you dead

Have you tried layering it a bit.... that usually gives volume to fine thin hair, oh and maybe you can put in some low lights, Wink yeah suckers I know what she looks like...... but low lights should be dark blond etc....
layers should not be to short, you still have to be able to braid or make a bun...

then you call your pal Sally she will come over and we add a bright red or purple or pink streak in your hair Wink

try and find this... takes the fizz completely out, might be expensive but the bottle last a year.... only on drop at a time
