Getting frustrated with this country....

Starryeyed's picture

Myself and oh are stuck in a never ending cycle of renting. Rent costs on average 1400 a month but can be as high as 1600 euro for a three bed house where we are living (nothing spectacular). To buy a house in the area is a minimum of 350000 but really anything decent (again not spectacular) will cost about 400000. You need to have a deposit of 20% of house value in order to get mortgage which is just not possible to save when our rent is so high.

In addition, dh got a bonus of 13000 in work, of which he had to pay 8000 in tax. Just automatically deducted from his pay packet: rest went off credit cards but at least they are cleared. Just feel like we can never get ahead living in this country, it's just so frustrating.

so, where are the kids gonna live once you flip? Is one of them going to buy it? Or will they have to find a new place to live??

It is frustrating to say the least.

Here rent really depends on where you live. When we lived in a large urban city, rents were about $1200 to live in the ghetto and about 1600 to live in a descent area. In a small town in rural areas that will get you a decent sized nice home.

It sucks though when rent is so high.

Rent here is $1500 - $2000 for a 3 bedroom house on average.
Houses range from $300K to $3-5 million depending on the community. We are a big sprawling city.
The $300K neighbourhoods are becoming more and more ethnic and rentals.

In our neighbourhood houses built in the 1950's are selling for $600K. New in fills, where they tear down one of those 50's bungalows and build 2 new houses go for $900K - $1.1 million.
Across the street from us is a new community, it's reclaimed military land in the inner city, houses start at $1 million and go up to $2.5. They are 2500 square feet to 4000 square feet on 50 - 75 foot lots!

We are dependant on oil and so things have taken a down turn. There are more rentals on the market and prices have been dropping. Same with house sales, the luxury market, over $1 million, has dropped by about 10%

Watching those Reno shows in the states sometimes annoy the he!! out of me. 3000 square foot houses for $150K!?! You can't get a 10 year old 600 square foot condo for under $250K here.

A three bedroom, one bath, 1000 s.f house where I live in central Massachusetts (45 minutes from Boston) starts at $250k. That's with small yard and maybe 1 car garage. Likely built before 1950 and updated round about 1980. Anything with recently updated bath, kitchen, etc is going for over $300k. The struggle is real Wink

Oooo hi neighbor! Apartments in the east bay are now 2500$ a month. Our lease came up on our house and I was looking at an emergency back up plan as this house we're renting can sell for 750k+.

We're thinking the owners will sell as they aren't resigning a lease with us.

It's such a pain to find places to rent with pets!!

I saw the 3 bedroom houses in mountain view renting for 4000$ a month..... Heeeeeeckkk nooo!!

We're in escrow right now, getting the hell out of the bay area!!
