ADD, summer school, and more

SS10 gets into way too much trouble for it to be normal. Last week, he told me that he got in trouble with his father and I asked him why. He then went on to tell me an elaborate story. The gist of it was something about a boy (who he has told me in the past he doesn't get along with) showed him marijuana and he threw it out and SS10 touched it or something like that. It's a big enough deal to where the dean called yesterday and asked for a written statement from him. Every week he gets in trouble in school for something. He always says it wasn't his fault but I don't understand how all of his teachers could have similar issues with him. He just doesn't listen.

The kid is pretty bright when you talk about something he likes. He loves talking about sharks, science, and superheroes. But he never does his homework, lies about having homework, he breaks everything, he just always gets into some kind of trouble all the time. I looked up the ADD criteria and he fits the inattentive kind. I brought it up to SO but he refuses to hear it. He says that the issue is that he's not home or spending enough time with him. Which might be a part of it, but I remember when I first met SO, he would always have to help SS10 do his homework and SS10 would end up crying by the end of it. Why? Because he can barely read, and when he has to write, he doesn't want to do it so he writes sloppy and SO made him redo it.
I have tried in the past to teach him, but he starts asking personal questions (how was your day today, ooh is that a new shirt?) and gets distracted very easily. It was like trying to teach a piece of furniture. So I didn't try anymore. I told SO I like teaching people who actually WANT to learn and I was ending up too frustrated dealing with SS10 so I basically just tell him to do his homework when he comes home but I don't check it. I told SO he needed to step in and do that and he hasn't been able to be consistent with it.

Found out today also that SS15 has to go to summer school also. It seems like he's lost all interest in boxing and spends literally all of his time on the phone with his gf. I told SO that he needs to talk to him and remind him that just because he has a gf doesn't mean he shouldn't be able to have a life too.

Finally SO is on his way now to get SS5. BM2 texted him today and said something along the lines of "get ready, he's not the quiet boy he was before." Lord help me. I'm taking Disneyfan's suggestion of sending the kids to the pool and summer breakfast and lunch but tomorrow will be raining so we'll see how it goes. I'm almost sure I'll end up looking after him because last week while we were at work, SS10 was able to get in the hallway and break holes in the wall with a hammer....while SS15 was supposed to be watching him. Like I said SS15 is now always on the phone (facetime) with gf so I'm not sure how this is going to work.

I have a SS who I tried to help and who is diagnosed with ADHD.

Here's my experience: the distraction is really diversion. The kid did not want to write. He is a poor writer so was trying to ask diversion questions or tell me about things to get away from writing. He is also fairly bad at reading people/emotions so when the homework was about his perceptions or to explain how someone was feeling he was double-desperate not to do it.

My guess is your SS needs hand writing help and practice.

My other SS was reading below grade level and he doesn't like to do anything he's not good at. He's gifted in sports so he focuses on that. The thing that got him reading was this series and the very first book. It appeals to the non reader just at the age of your SS. Charlie Joe Jackson's Guide to Not Reading.
