What is acceptable skid dress code?

Maria10's picture

In my house I insist that the kids and hubs wear a shirt and pants while in the house( pyjamas count as long as tops and bottoms are both worn). Unless at the pool shirts and pants are to be worn at all times. I am the only girl and I have to wear shirts and pants so should they. It is how they can show me respect.

Bm1 does not require such things at her house. Ss12( hormonal already) can sit in his underwear around her house.(she thought it was weird I require both male skids to be clothed at my house) . SS12  has tried numerous times to say that he is hot and needs to take his shirt off at my house. Today he was wearing shorts only to take out the trash when we picked him up...in the driveway at Bms house. I found that annoyed me.

It is not a huge deal but it is annoying.

What do you think? Do you let your skids lay about in their underwear? Why or why not?

Shorts - yes.  Shirt - why?  Heck, I wish I could go topless sometimes when it's really hot.  My bewbs and bras would probably thank me!  Seriously though, I understand shorts because no one needs to see anyone in their underwear.  That's just inappropriate.  Totally baffled on making boys and men wear tops, though.  Sorry, don't get it.

Personally I wish I could wake up at night and not have to put clothes on to go potty lol...but I do.*smile*(skids are good about knocking or just plain not coming in the room)

I can see how in a hot climate it is an issue of temperature control. Lol...bewb sweat I understand...

Bm1 lets her kids + her dh in their underwear during  the day. However she does not require pyjamas be worn or sheets to be used on matresses either. So SS12 comes home(to my+dh house) and goes to bed in his dayclothes( thats what he does at bm house) If he can sleep in a shirt pants and underwear he can certainly wear a shirt pants and underwear when around me. Also heat is not an issue as we have ac in every room.

I just imagine him going on sleepovers or visiting his Gf parents(hopefully wayyy in future lol)  and coming out in only his underwear to breakfast.

I had to rell my SS that, "The only guy who gets to walk around my house in his underwear is The Man of the House, the Alpha-Male, the Top Income Earner, My Husband and Your Dad. Nobody else. I bought you several pair of pajamas, shorts, most of the clothes you own, and recently a really nice bath robe... plus your dad spoke to you TWICE abour showing me some respect in our house." Basically had to demand lazy SS get dressed because it is offensive to me. Even more so before SS finally got a part-time, minimum wage job in May; like, I was really supposed to be okay with some unemployed 18 year old who comes home high, doesn't contribute or clean up after himself or his room (= my guest room before DH moved in, got custody & moved SS in), who lays in bed until noon then waddles out to the kitchen in his underwear watching YouTubes on his smartphone the whole time ge fixes food & leaves his mess... oh no that is not my life!

Maria10's picture

Waddles? Moobs? Overhang? How old is this kid Ugh...sounds unsettling to your much nicer stomach lol...I always imagine myself doing something like below(i don't think I could do it bit you never know when I will be pushed to it)****Disclaimer: imaginary scenario for entertainment purposes only ;)****

One day when he is fast asleep go make a sandwich in his room...mayo and crumbs aaallll ooverrr his precious youtube viewing phone...maybe some otalian dressing leave the breadand coldcuts all over the desk and floor too..some crumbs on pillow and chest...when he wakes up and cries and yells  about it tell him you heard him last night in the kitchen... And act surprised and very distraught about all the bread and mayo being there. Surely YOU would not do this to your own house? Aww SS maybe you forgot you had a sandwich and now you are yelling at me after getting high in my house and making this mess. i think its time for some counseling.

Lol bahahahaha...

I have a  son and 2 step sons. I do make sure they all wear bottoms. My yss used to try and hang out in his underwear a lot when me and DH 1st got together. I just told him that I was not a blood relative and that it was inappropriate for him not to have shorts on. Basketball shorts are comfortable, just go put them on. They have to wear shirts to the table for dinner. If they are running back and forth from in to out, playing basketball, being hot and active... I don't worry about shirt. Like Cooookies said... Honestly a little jealous! If they are just lounging around the house being bums, I will tell them to finish getting dressed.

Maria10's picture

Yes if it is hot or they are active then no shirt is required(rather not have to wash a muddy sweaty shirt lol). Im trying to instill good social habits early.

Around the house they have to wear pants or pyjama pants if lounging. They can sleep in just underwear or wear pyjamas for bed. I do require a shirt(dh keeps the ac on 65 so not hot inside).

No  running around in undies at my house. But I had a mixture of boys and girls with a fairly spaced out age bracket and after about age two, nobody wants wants to see you run around in your undies.

Very casual pull on soft knit shorts they all liked being lazy in. My daughters wear/wore a tank top or cami style tees or the old style baby doll pjs. Winter cold they all went for blanket lounge pants. My daughters would swipe their brothers old tee-shirts and wear as night gowns (my boys were all very tall and my girls very short. Of course I purchased real pjs, but those big sloppy tees of their brothers were they favorite comfies.

I do dislike seeing grown males running around out in public shirtless (hmm, maybe as stated above, it's jealousy that I have to cover up , lol) My neighbor mows his lawn shirtless and that's fine, he's at his home. It's unsightly to watch him jiggle around on that riding mower, but harmless enough.

What I would have a problem with is kids sleeping in street clothes. Ick. And no sheeting on the beds? Gross. Dirty smelly young teen males sleeping on bare mattresses I'd think would rapidly start leaving a foul smell in the bedroom.

My husband and my neighbor both wear shirts when mowing though hubs and neighbor do not jiggle anyplace. Lol...the jiggle could be entertaining...

And yeah my ss12 now makes his bed at my house is required to shower and change and wear deodorant lol.(required....sounds so clinical no?)

No shirt is acceptable around the house.

IMHO…you are being WAY to nit picky and a tad controlling.  I mean…it annoyed you that the child was shirtless at his mothers house!

Maybe because we are in Texas but men go shirtless here all the time when at home.  My DH is shirtless half of the time.  SS and DS were also shirtless a lot when they lived with us.  No big deal here.

Maria10's picture

I am in the tri state area. We do not have the same heat issues lol.

I am annoyed at men not wearing shirts in general(especially hormonal teens lol--SS12 almost 13). I am annoyed that BM lets him sit around in his underwear bc then he wants to do that at my house. Its an issue of if the shirt goes the pants are next. Lol...hahaha...I know all about the domino effect! Lol.

I can see why in Texas it would not be a big deal. It would not be annoying to me if we were down there bc there would be a reason to be shirtless(heat!!! )

But I don't want to see him without a shirt.  In the pool is bad enough.

And I told skid girl (13) to always wear a bra in my presence, since I always wear one in hers.

I don't wear PJs around my skids--heck, I don't even come out of my bedroom with my hair "undone".  I think it's a function of how terribly uncomfortable they make me with their sneaking, spying and skulking.

Maria10's picture

Ss12(almost 13) has had to learn to put clothes on in his room. He used to come out naked to look for his clothes. He is very good about it now. He has to be dressed bc he is a hormonal teenager with teenage sexual urges and the accompanying bodily reflexes(I never thought I would have to think about this...lol)

Ss6 is occasionally allowed naked when he dries from his bath. The reasoning is he is still a baby and not old enough to understand what sexual urges are.

I am a bit more casual and my hair- meh. I wear sweats and a tank/shirt around the house. I always put jeans/ pants on and dress nicer when in public(even to only go to corner store-dh laughs when I do this). Never in any degrees of nudity around the boys. (Unless you count bare arms as nudity lol)

If Im dressed around the house they should be too.

I don’t care what they wear but when I’m around I don’t want to see SDs midsection. That is all.

Maria10's picture

With you on that. If I had SD no clothes too sexy and no bare skin (unless arms or legs).

Luckily I have male skids. Still hard to see them act like their mothers. I do care they are clean and wear appropriate size clothing.

ProbablyAlreadyInsane's picture

Since both my skids are girls, I require a shirt and bottoms. I don't care what. Could be shorts, pajamas, etc. But they need to be clothed. I don't think running aruond in underwear is acceptable.

Haha...more of our husbands should be like your friend!

Gma sounds like my BM1...

Whenever Bm1 has to make any effort whatsoever " they were being just sooo MEAN to me" (insert super annoying whiny voice here.)

I hope Gma learned her lesson by living with Ss  bc it sounds like she favors men over women and has forced BM to take it easy on her sloth of a son for waaayyy too long.

Still dumbfounded by Ss having a gf.
