OT- Spring Parent Teacher Conferences

Last-Wife's picture

Spring Conferences are so boring. I'm looking for ideas to make it a more interactive night between the student and parents. Any suggestions? What have you seen teachers do to make parent conferences more student led?

Well you probably won't like to hear this... but my DD's conferences at her elementary school were all "student led". The teachers had the kids put together folders with specific assignments, etc. and the kids had practiced what things they would show the parents. That way, you could have 10 kids parents in the room all at once, and the teacher could just "float" to each set of parents as needed.

I HATED student-led conferences, because I want to be able to talk directly, privately to the teacher and hear from her mouth how my child is doing, what concerns there are, etc. I never think that talking to a teacher about my child is boring.

I liked the "I'm I smarter thing" but agree with private time. If you could mix the two I think you would have a winner. Remember not all parents have my or others sense of humor. When you come across a parent like that give the kid a big hug from me. Things are tense around their house usually. If you are one of those teachers that spend the extra time? I love the "Smarter Than" idea! I'm going to work on that...

I plan to incorporate both, student led and one-on-one time with the teacher. Spring conferences are so difficult around here, because baseball practice and spring soccer will have already started, so it's hard to get families to come in. Plus, the district cut our time by an hour and half, and I am looking for ways to get more families through, in a shorter amount of time. i thought the activities could stagger people in while I meet with parents one-on-one.

I want the kids to be able to "show off" for their parents, and be able to start the night with that positive spin...

other ideas?
