O/T: Goes along with the infertility blogs

LadyTremaine07's picture

So I go to check Facebook today and I see that Oklahoma is trying to pass a "Personhood Bill." This bill states the life begins at conception and that unborn children have rights. The wording is so broad that it can be interpreted as banning birth control, Plan B, and fertility treatments, such as in vitro fertilization. I read this and it absolutely breaks my heart. Two years ago, I was diagnosed with polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS). Due to my PCOS, I am battling infertility. I have 2 options. I can take Clomid (which would probably be banned under this law) or I can have IVF done. I know that some of you will say that I could also adopt, but as much as I am in favor of adoption, it's not for me. I want my own children, my own flesh and blood. Way to go, Oklahoma. Way to make me quiver in my shoes about whether or not it will be illegal for me to become pregnant because I may be unable to conceive naturally. I'm not sure how the rest of you feel, but I view this as a blatant attack on women's rights. If a woman miscarries naturally, is she going to be charged with involuntary manslaughter? According to the wording of this law, its very possible that the state could do this.

I'm including a full text of the bill:

Um, what is it if not birth control? It prevents pregnancy. It may not be the SMARTEST form of birth control, but it IS birth control.

I couldn't agree with you more. I'm an American and travel for work a lot. People don't believe me when I tell them how silly we look to people in other countries when it comes to the political & ideological nonsense.

I lived in England for a while, and I simply don't get the hatred. In fact, I find the condescension appalling, mostly from countries that have long ago given up any world leadership status. The sun has set on the British empire for a while, and it is beyond presumptuous for them to assume that they ( or other members of the EU) somehow know best. Haven't there been race and class riots in England recently? Aren't there an increasingly large number of Britons somehow reliant on public assistance? How bout England (and other countries) get their shit in one bag before passing judgement on America?

But no, just like a bunch of mean girls, they will slam America as a way of making them feel better about themselves.....

And then there's the horrifying thought...would the rapist have paternal rights? These girls and women could conceivably be required to build an ongoing relationship with their attacker with supporting visitation and enforcing child support. Can you imagine being forced to sit together with your rapist in a parent-teacher conference? :jawdrop:

You do realize that there is no conception unless reproductive materials join and a pregnancy takes place, correct?

If life begins at conception, this bill would not ban contraceptives such as the pill, iud, or barrier methods such as condoms or diaphrams.

I'm not in favor of it. I'm pro choice, although I personally would not choose abortion. I realize it would pose difficulty for IVF as well.

i'd really love to hear just one of those f'g idiots tell me i "killed" the babies i lost. i'm not a killer, but if they accused me of being one for having 2 mc's and a stillbirth, i would become a killer in a hurry.

I do believe that Mississippi tried to pass this bill and it never did. Maybe it will be the same way with Oklahoma. The bill actually has to get voted in and I really, really hope it doesn't.

"Let this stuff go. Let gays marry. End the wars. Separate church and state. PROGRESS, not regress.

It's embarrassing to watch. Abortion has already been dealt with. Stop trying to reopen. (And this is coming from someone who is against abortion because who am I or who is government to tell someone what to do with their bodies?). There's so many more current and unhandled issues to be dealt with."
