Week from Hell about to begin

iamlosingit's picture

So today marks the day where we have ss until Sunday 7/8.  dh has normal visitation today from about 3-830, then tomorrow he picks up ss at 4p.m. and we have him until 5pm on Sunday.  SS fish died over the weekend (second fish in a year) so I am waiting for disney-dad to go nuts this week trying to compensate.

I have done nothing to assist with this week.  Since dh dropped the ball on the annual "fourth of July camping trip from hell" he is all in a panic trying to figure out what fun things to do with ss from the 3rd to the 6th.  He has no money but this isn't going to stop him, other than the cabin trip this weekend he has nothing planned.  He tried to invite himself to my other cousins house in Brainerd to watch fireworks until I reminded him she has two daughters under the age of 7 and there will be nobody for ss to play with. Plus I don't understand driving over an hour away just to watch fireworks with no other activities planned.

SIL picked up ss on Thursday to go to a "splash pad" two hours before the normal Thursday visitation time of 4p.m. with permission from BM.  We got the phone call that ss was back and to come get him.  SS didn't want to go yet since he was playing with his cousin so we stayed until 730.  SIL offered leftover fajitas for dinner, I declined but dh had some.  SS had pasta and no fajitas.  That Friday dh almost called in because he felt sick.  DH gets Food poisoning.  SIL husband ate the fajitas as well and he was sick all weekend too.  This morning dh claims he feels a little better but not 100% yet.  I've never had food poisoning so I'm not sure how long this will last.

So now it is day one of my "week from hell' and the house is still a disaster from the last visitation weekend/week, dh is broke, he has not gone grocery shopping so I have no idea what his plans are for ss breakfast/lunch/snacks....we normally eat breakfast and lunch at work (or we starve it out until we are home) so I don't know how this is going to go. And I have decided I don't care.  Beaches are free, renting movies is cheap (c'mon dh, put that $1300 72 inch TV that you HAD TO HAVE to use!) we have a huge park within walking distance from our house, there are things to do that don't have to cost a mortgage payment.

We'll see how this goes.  I will update if any "WTF" moments...only because I am also broke and have nothing else to do lol.

Free beaches??  I am so jealous!

I agree with Future - do not buy groceries.  At most, dollar stores sell plenty of boxes of spaghetti, just add butter.

not all are free but the ones that are, not too shabby Smile Some parks have kiddie wading pools, pretty sure "splash pad" stuff SIL gets on "Groupon" so it isn't that bad.

Yeah let the kid eat what is at your house. I don't get this why these parents get "special food" for their kids or spend extra money on just certain things they like. DH over here does the same thing until I took over the grocery shopping. I buy groceries once a week and the whole month of June if the skids ran out of snacks then they were SOL until I went to the grocery store again. With DH not working I am not spending extra money on his kids they eat what is there or they starve.

the "special food" thing drives me nuts.  We were at a store yesterday to look at a lifejacket for ss at the cabin (ss does not swim well at all) and I had to stop dh from buying $22 on two lbs of fresh shrimp because it was "on sale".  Um...dh we don't even buy that for us, why the heck would we buy that when ss is over??? What next? Rib-eye steak??  Shrimp is a treat for us, ss would eat it but not see it as a "treat" he'd stuff his face, be "still hungwy" and ask for something else in an hour.

Frozen or deli-made hamburgers. Other than that no.  I don't care that he buys things on sale or something special, its when he gets an idea that ss will "love" a particular expensive food as much as we will and spends a ton of money on one meal that ss won't even remember.  Seafood is usually a "special occasion" food for us and rarely purchased.   DH could get ss something more up his alley like breaded popcorn shrimp, allowing us to stretch the shrimp into two meals.  Or make him BBQ chicken, something ss actually enjoys eating.   It's like buying a 10 year old a lobster tail.  Will they see it as a "splurge" or a "special occasion" thing? Doubtful.  There's nothing wrong with making a child a special meal every now and then, but when you are on a budget I see nothing wrong with not buying the exact same thing for a child as the adults.

My parents used to buy themselves rib-eye steaks for special occasions and my brother and I would split a bottom-round sirloin or a flank strip steak.  Same type of food just a cheaper cut of meat. I never felt "slighted" because I didn't have the exact same thing.

Yeah same here. I stopped cooking for the skids and I do the grocery shopping. I ask DH what he wants to make and what he wants to make for the skids and I try to buy what I can and budget as much as I can. Special occasions are for like birthdays, christmas, etc. not just because.

I miss-read the question sorry, certain specialty burgers (ex blue cheese and mushroom) he will not buy for ss for visitation but he will buy when ss is not over if on sale. Frozen burgers or a special bacon and cheese deli burger for ss he will get any time there is a sale.

he has to be because once again I paid all the utilities last month.  He did buy a few more groceries, but not $100 worth (his utility share)

The stone arch bridge has good fireworks as does the Blaine soccer center, I think that Richfield has a parade and I know Delano has fireworks and a carnival.

How old is the kid again?
