cut-out cookie icing?

iamlosingit's picture

I wanted to ask in the 'recipe' forum but that looks like you can only post recipes not ask questions?
Does anybody have an easy icing recipe? The pre-made tub kinds get kind of goopy...I have this "vision" of smoothly-iced Christmas sugar cookies Blum 3 you know, the "perfect mom pintrest" kind lol is that even possible? I love all the tiny details, there is no better way to disengage then drawing tiny buttons and cuff-links, shingles, feathers, all sorts of cool stuff Smile

simply take the icing and mix bits and bits of water in till you have the correct consistency...

I make it runny, then over the cookies, it dries quickly and I might go for a second layer and then decorate with ones and thousands or silver beads or what ever, I'm a lazy cook lol...

I found microwaving the icing tubs kind of helps too but dear lord don't forget to check the settings! Icing was great consistency but I melted the tub it was in like something creepy from a horror movie

Blum 3 Blum 3 Blum 3 on Marsh we do not have the luxuries of icing in a tub.... nope you have to make it it all yourself....

Look up glace icing.
Also add a little water to tub icing. Another hint (my parents ran a bakery) is to get an icing spatula and dip it in boiling water. The heat transfers from the spatula to the icing and 'melts' it a little so you can get that smooth finish. And when you spread it do so in a circular motion. Like a cat swatting something. Good luck!

It’s time consuming and you need a steady hand but I outline and fill my cookies with icing.

It takes a while to get used to but I can give you the website to learn how to do it from if your interested. These are some cookies I made a few weeks ago:

Look up royal icing. Easy to make, but it takes experience to work with.

I prefer one made from powdered sugar, corn syrup, milk, and vanilla extract (or other flavoring I guess). Maybe a few other ingredients but I don't think so. It dries hard enough so that you can stack cookies without them sticking together.

Use gel colors, not liquid colors, so the icing consistency isn't affected.

My favorite cut-out cookie icing is the Betty Crocker kind that you buy for 1.50 or so at the grocery store. You scoop it out with your knife and slather it on the cookie. I usually add some sprinkles and stuff and the cookies are good to go. I use the squeezy packages of icing for my gingerbread men.

This chick ain't got time for all that foo foo made from scratch stuff. People in my house are thankful they even get home made cut out cookies vs. the pre-made tube of sugar cookies lol

Try a royal icing!!! You'll have to pipe it from a decorating bag... But I love it!!!

All we did was mix powdered sugar and water, put in a few different little bowls, and add a drop of different food coloring to each one. Then we decorated with silver balls, sprinkles, red hots, whatever. We weren't trying to make masterpieces, though. So much fun!

i wasn't brought up with christmas and my mother, although stay at home, was no cookie baker.

I usually end up making an ornamental gingerbread house with royal icing.
